JA7 Scratch Build (Update 15th July)

LOL

wow, that’s a completely novel approach! Some really neat methods being used there and I love the monster taps and dies. I think that the pill is probably the best one I’ve seen on BLF - beautiful and functional at the same time!

Very nice work, I am looking forward to the finished light. The use of silver in a flashlight is just great!

updated 1st post July 10th. thanks

I like the way everyone is using the tools and skills they have to do different things. It really has been fantastic watching the other mode take shape. Well done sir.

Looking good.

Just broke my hammer. In hindsight I guess superglue was not the best thing to keep the head on. I may have to go try my luck at casting.

Time for a new handle, eh?

Love the deep peening texture on this build, really unlike I’ve ever seen. Fix the handle fast!

Post one Updated With the cast.

Just wanted to say awesome build JA7! Looking forward to the finished product!

Have you got a handle on this?

Well done on the casting. I’m starting to think that maybe you are really a mad Jeweler?

Perhaps a little mad. Always had a keen interest in making anything really. I do have a background in making contemporary jewelery but jewelers never been my handle. I managed to not only break my favorite hammer but broke my other one trying to smash the head back on. they are both back together now, for how long? my guess is not.

This is so cool, i’m really loving these builds, thanks for the show n tell JA7.

I keep thinking I’ve seen the most insane crazy imaginative and pure gonzo build, but every time something else comes up to surprise me. I think investment casting a switch housing has to be the pinnacle so far though. Amazing.

Oh, love the monster tap’n’die too, if I haven’t already mentioned that (probably have, they’re monsters!)

Haha, thanks i think? The tap n die’s are really at the heart of this build. I have tried to design the light around 22 and 24mm thread, just wish i could stop the light from spinning in the vise. originally i bought the 24x1 to make a throw head for my sipik sk-68 out of some POM and a 40mm aspheric.

how about lining the jaws with rubber (bike inner tube for example) and sticking an appropriately sized piece of doweling/ chair leg up the inside to avoid crushing the tube? That and backing up the tap/ die every turn or so to clear chips - I’ve read that copper is very soft and gummy, so you may have chips sticking’n’spalling which adds to the torque required to thread.

The only way you may possibly stop hollow things spinning is to use leather jaws in your vice, maybe some old leather gloves and a piece of wood whittled to fit inside. Good luck.

Thanks guys, trying to stop my workpiece from turning has been a nightmare. I could probably find an old waist belt to re purpose if that would do. Only have a couple more threads to go.

Dad had a hammer like that, it had 4 new handles and two new heads
