Review: Sunwayman V11R Mirage (XML U3 AA/14500/CR123A/16340)

Sunwayman V11R Mirage XM-L U3

Sunwayman has a few different V11R special editions, and this is the uniquely hand painted camouflage V11R, the XM-L U3 Mirage.

All copies of this light are unique, not only because they are hand-painted, but also because there are only 800 sets available world wide.

Which makes this a real collector`s item.

Dimensions and weight

AA/14500style
Length: 100mm , Diameter 23mm.

Weight: 60 gram (without battery)

CR123A/16340 style:
Length: 85mm , Diameter 23mm.
Weight: 50 gram (without battery)

It`s not the smallest AA light and neither the lightest. Lights such as the Eagletec D25A (87mm,24gr) beats it in this class if you care about the extra grams and extra millimeters.
It`s in the same league as the Fenix LD12 (105mm,54gr.), and Xeno E03 (97mm,48gr.)
Here a comparison shot with from left to right: Ultrafire M5, Itp EOS A3, Sunwayman M10A, Sunwayman V11R and Fenix LD12.

Close up:

As can be seen in the picture above, the letters are really crisp and clear, unlike my Sunwayman M10A where the letters are blurry.

Sunwayman V11r runs on a CR123A cell as well as an AA using the extender.
The extension part has a thicker wall, so that AA cells don`t rattle inside the light.
The extender is on the right.

All threads are Square cut, and came without any lubrication.
The reason is probably that therefore the light will not easily be locked out.
All threads are anodized, which makes it easy to lock out turning the body only by a few millimeters.
For sturdiness anodized threads are better, but it could accidentally happen, when you are turning the Magnetic Control Ring that the light turns off. This accidentally locking out has been reported several times.

The head of the light has a Magnetic control ring, a Coated tempered glass lens, and a orange peel reflector.
Moon-mode:

The magnetic control ring has good knurling, so it makes it easy to change output, even wearing gloves!

Handling:

Just as the mag.control ring the main body as well as the extender have a good quality knurling.
When you pick this light up, you feel directly that you are holding a Premium light.
The anodization feels rock solid, and I havent been able to find any cosmetic blemish.

My main battery type I will be using is AA, but it is really nice to be able to use different types of batteries, especially for emergency purposes.

The tactical forward clicky makes it possible to use it momentary on.

Because I mainly use the light with AA batteries, the following measurements are taken with using an AA eneloop battery.

Runtime and Performance:

AA Performance (Eneloop 3rd gen):
Lowest:0.04A
Highest: 2.3A

14500 Performance (unprotected Ultrafire):
Lowest:0.02A
Highest:1.6A

Lowest setting is only about 1 lumen, both on AA and 14500.
The output is very sensitive using the magnetic control ring. It doesn`t have any "dead space", so even the slightest turn the output increases.
On the lowest setting it draws around 0.04A on AA, but even turning the ring slightly the output increases to a few lumens, but the DMM still shows 0.05A

Runtime on High, using an AA battery is around 55 minutes
The following pictures show the output measured over 55 minutes, with picture intervals of 5 minutes.

Somewhere between 52 and 55minutes the light starts blinking due to the Low Battery Warning.

PWM:

The V11R is current controlled, and therefore PWM is not noticeable in any output setting!

Beamshot:

I put the V11R up against the Fenix LD12 (XPG), but comparing and XM-L and a XP-G doesnt really work.

V11R on the left, Fenix LD12 on the right.

On Low:
Left: Fenix LD12 (3lumens) Right: Sunwayman V11R (1-lumen)

Left: Fenix LD12 (3lumens) Middle: Sunwayman V11R (1-lumen) Right: ITP Eos a3 (3lumens)

Looking at the pictures, the lowest setting seems to be less than 1 lumen.
But it`s difficult to tell.

Summary:
PROS:

  • Premium light made out of quality materials.
  • The anodization seems to be of high quality, so you don`t have to worry too much about bumping it into something.
  • The clip is very sturdy, and won`t brake easily.
  • Extensible.
  • It runs on different kind of batteries, and therefore a very good EDC/emergency light.
  • Using the magnetic control ring is a breeze, and can be handled one-handed.
  • NO PWM.
  • Infinite variable output.
  • Moonlight mode.
  • Limited edition, hand painted, 800 copies available.
  • Low voltage warning.

CONS:

  • Run time on high is just shy of 55minutes (specs show a misleading 90minutes)
  • Using the magnetic control ring one-handed can sometimes result in an accidental lock out.
  • Price (isn`t really budget.)
  • Output on High using an AA battery isn`t the greatest, so I consider this as a Con.. Comparing to other premium lights with more output and longer run time.
  • Some axial play on the M.C.ring, so it seems that dirt can get in between.

Added a GIF, now I know how to make a GIF file with GIMP... it took a while, but it works..

But I think its better to do a GIF like this, with a white back ground.

My sample has #113/800 - it’s really a sweeeet light!

Whoa! Slow down - I get dizzy looking at that thing spin.

Nice review - I have number 503.

You can probably see that the light moved during repositioning.. I did it on feeling.

so I had to add them all in Layers in GIMP, and repositioning them one by one, so they would be on the same position between the shots. But the background moved... so I tried to crop a bit... but thats why a white background would have eliminated that problem

you must have gotten one last year?

No, i got it from fasttech about 2 month ago, before that big price jump.

Okay.. I thought you were one of the first to get one... Its a sweet light indeed!

does your light have any "dead" space around the control ring, that the output doesnt change even you turn the ring?

Mine is very sensitive and works well, without any dead space..

The regulation is very evenly spaced, seems to be logarithmic and adopts well to the reception curve of the human eye. There is no “dead space” - maybe the last 2 degrees at full don’t do much, but i think it’s ok. The only complaint i could think of is: The ring has, although very little, axial play. You can push it, maybe 2/10th of a mm back and forth. I’m suspicious, that some grind or dirt may get inside and interfere with the smooth operation of the ring. I don’t know, time will tell. :~

it looks like it slides around a bit as it spins

yes, there is some play.. will add that to the Cons..

? explain.

do you mean it "skips" while you turn it? mine doesnt have that (yet).

Nice review and nice pics.

Thanks.

It looks like the background moves, resulting in the V11R sliding to the right. I guess either you’re not placing the V11R exactly in the same spot for each picture or the lighting changes.

Just looks kind of weird because I’m expecting only movement in the V11R and a static background.

Wow, what an awesome review ChibiM! Is this your first review? I especially like the GIF which is probably a first here on BLF but what would I know since I rarely am online anymore.

Awesome job ChibiM!!!

ChibiM's homemade GIF is pretty impressive. 8)

...and it's nice to see you around, fishinfool.

You like animated GIFs? Shocking! :p

Great review, like the Gif! I justy learned how to do that in photoshop. It's a real nice tool. Looks nice, wish I could afford one right now.

Fantastic review ChibiM!
Hoping to see more reviews from you in the future!

Ah I see, i thought you were talking about using the control ring.

Yes, I better use an even lit white background next time. Or put it on some kind of rotating stand. I turned it around by feeling, but failed.

Still things to learn ;)

@fishinfool: Im not sure but I think this is my 4th-5th review. I've seen the gifs used on BLF before, so I just wanted to try that out.
