A Primer on Pocket Knives - Work in Progress!

Administrator can we have a section for Knives Please?

Me too and I almost broke it trying to pry it open.

And Part 3 is posted.

Very nice, and straightforward. Please keep 'em coming!

That's the clearest and most concise overview of knife steels I've seen. Thank you for boiling it down to the essentials and providing such a nice foundation for further reading. I think I'll be referring to it again and again.

Alright, part 4 is up. It's going to take me a few weeks to finish part 5 as it involves a buttload of pictures.

I'm curious about the difference between Micarta and Pakkawood, and between G10 and fiberglass.

Pakkawood just "micarta" with sawdust or is the resin fundamentally different?

Same for G10/fiberglass, seems to be the same thing by the surface description.

Sorry, updated the article to better explain the differences. G10 and FRN are essentially the same thing, it's just that G10 is an FRN handle that's been cut in to extremely thin layers and laminated back together. Micarta is only made with full sheets of material, while Pakkawood is only made with sawdust (loose material).

Wow Jekostas, thanks for all your effort to put this knife primer together.

Hi all,

I just joined the forum. I think is a great place. I just finished reading the knife primer. Seriously that is a very good, educational piece of work.

Excellent stuff. I enjoyed reading every bit of it. Very informative indeed, I now know much more about knives then I used to know 10 minutes agoLaughing . Looks like I'll start collecting some knives Surprised.

Many thanks for sharing some of your knowledge with us.

Thank you Jekostas, I can now make sense of the various locks. All these locks can be used safely, with a little knowledge and common sense.

and why no knife section ???? we have alot of posts about them

just one lump category under Gear for Flashlight Carriers hmmm

Fantastic jekostas! Thank you sincerely for your hard work and for sharing your knowledge.

Maybe it will be the first Sticky in the NEW KNIFE FORUM!! that Mr. Administrator is going to make!!

It's going under the "Gear for Flashlight Carriers Forum" as a sub-forum.

Of course I could be wrong, but I can't ever remember being wrongTongue Out

Keep pouring the knowledge my friend

Great section, thank you very much. One thing I would be curious about is the various shapes of blades and tips, like drop point, clip point, etc. There is some information online, however a good summary of the basic types with an explanation of why some are better suited for certain applications would be appreciated.

Necrothread bump. Nice reading!

I’ll bump the necro as well. It had a great start. It’s too bad the OP wasn’t able to find the time to continue. There’s so much more to say! Alas, they bailed… over 8 years since last log-in. Oh well. :innocent:
