Defiant 3C MT-G2, 4 x 26650 custom build. 9 Amp driver pictures added 16.8.13.

I hope you own stock in Alu production. That’s some seriously heavyweight hardware.

Wow! Amazing machine work! I bow before you great master!

Wow! Those are some really cool looking lights! I cant wait for the beamshots either. That machining is awesome.

The flashlights at the back are so tall that made me think they’re samurai swords! (or light sabers).

Very nice machine work MRsDNF. Boring something that long can be challenging to say the least. I only have a QCTP 5/8 boring bar holder and boring bars where not available in the length I needed especially when the holder eats about 3” of that, so I had to make my own using a TCMT 21.51 insert and 4140 chromoly steel rod then heat treating it. Now I can bore 10” taking small cuts, if I try to take larger cuts it begins to chatter fully extended.
I know how much time goes into making something like this and its greatly appreciated that you can share it with the rest of us. I was going to attempt something on the same lines as this with a MT-G2 but was afraid it might turn floody instead of a thrower. I would really enjoy seeing some beamshots with this setup when you get time, maybe it will help me decide what to do with my backup 3C defiant. I already modded one with a XM-L2 and a copper sinkpad with a led-lck 5 amp driver with 2 18650’s. The throw did increase by eye, but not as much as I would have liked. By the way, that’s a very nice switch design.
Keep up the good work MRsDNF and thanks for sharing your hard work.

Thanks for the kind words all.
Night shots added to the 1st post.

Thanks for posting some beamshots MRsDNf. That thing looks to be awesome. It doesn’t appear to be a great thrower but the beam is very even all the way out, no rings. The color looks good too. I have got to get me a couple of those MT-G2’s.
Thanks again.

That is one serious light there! Another one of your beautiful designs. I am really jealous of how neat you are able to get the finish of your lights, love it!

Quick update. I hate to say this but the light developed an intermittent fault. One of those ones where if you whacked the head of the light hard into your hand it would work again and stop the light flickering. Some may laugh at this but l nearly cried. Yes my soldering has let me down again. Just when I think I’m getting better at it it turns around and bites you. The problem was traced to either the negative or positive strip on the star to led connection. I have since replaced the led which still works fine but thought I will put a new one on just in case. The star is starting to look decidedly second hand now with all the heat put through it. I used solder this time instead of solder paste on the led to pill/star junction. A new driver is being installed not that there was anything wrong with the old one, which will I hope boost output a little. Hopefully it will all work when I get it all back together. l’ll update when its all back together and working.

Sorry to hear about the connection issue. Hope your changes give you a nice boost.

I would like to add your light to the MTG2 throw thread. Is the 47334 in Post 12 above the actual lux reading from the meter or is it calculated cd (throw)? I'm guessing its the calculated throw (lux x distance squared) because 47334 lux at 8.6 meters would be 3500kcd.

By all means add it. It was calculated back not that I’m an expert on any of this. I had help from another member here.

Thank you

New pictures added in the first post with the 3C now sporting a IOS 9 amp 3 mode driver. This driver has transformed this light from a light that was did not impress at 120 meters to a light that literally goes look at me now at that distance. To say I’m blown away with the difference would be an understatement.

Yayy! Thats more like it! :)

How many batteries are you using??

And how does it seem to handle the heat?

Thanks RaceR86. I’m running 3 26650 batteries with a spacer. If it works ok I will shorten the battery tube. I haven’t completed any long runs with it yet so I’ll report back when I have. On the light meter it has not increased a tremendous amount but in reality its like the extra current has woken it up. Nothing has made much sense today.

You did really fine job. Very nice flood light and natural looking tint. 18 AWG wires?

But I am not sure about Fujik potting any more. It is pretty messy compound.

Holy crap! that 9a driver did the trick!!

Wow! Now that's the kind of MT-G2 light output I want!

Wow oh wow! That is just awesome, awesome, awesome. Congrats on your beauty that is now truly a beast.

I got to get me some of them leds.
Now that’s very impressive MRsDNF. WOW!!! :open_mouth:
