Trustfire AK-90 (12)XML-U2 Hyperboost driver @ 2000ma

is trimming the white spacer pretty easy to do? did relic explain how to do it in one of his threads?
i think id like to do that to my 9xml also. do you just use a very small round file ?

whats the longest amount of time you ever had it on high mode so far?

I got a good sized piece of 600 grit sand paper maybe 6 inch by 12 inch and put it flat on the table. Then I took the white plastic spacer put it on my finger tip and swirled it around flat on the sandpaper checking often to not sand too much off.

After the hieght was where I wanted it I beveled the inside of the white spacer with an exacto knife. That way the white spacers kinda flow into the aluminum reflector. Now there is a smooth transition from the white spacer to the aluminum reflector. No edges. If you blow up my pic of the reflector you can see a modified spacer and a stock spacer.

I dont know exactly how much it helped but how could you even tell with as much light this thing is putting out at 2A? You may notice a difference.

Ken

I ran it about 3 minutes last night. It was getting warm. But not hot.

Ken

Thank you!

Wow! Just Wow! Thanks for sharing!

+1

Looks like I will be doing an emitter swap on my 9xT6. I ever so boldly dedomed ALL 9 :weary: Killed one being lazy doing it without heat but that was the best thing that happened lol.

Put it back together, doesnt seem to throw much farther if at all and now is majorly ringy :Sp
Bummer. Well $60 later it should be nice neutral beautiful XM-L2 goodness!

If It has been stated already I missed it, what are you using for a driver?

Im using a hyperboost driver from Taskled.com. I considered dedoming mine, I think I will leave well enough alone.

You should be able to turn up the juice with 9 emitters. Im stuck at 2000ma because of only 4 batteries. If you are using 4 lithium ion batteries you should be able to push 2.3A to the emitters with the hyperboost driver. George does not recomend going over 6A input current from the batteries with the hyperboost.

I got an additional extension tube for 5 batteries. I havent tried it yet.

Ken

sounds like a real beast!

The HB flex has different modes too.

I like the all or nothing on my hotrod lights though.

wow, you ran it for 3 mins and it only got warm! that is waaaaay impressive. did someone say you are getting about 10,000 lumens? or was he just exaggerating?

my 9xml ak47 is doing about 6000 lumens, and it gets warm within seconds. the longest i ran it on high was for about 45 seconds, and it was very warm/hot.

the ak90 must have better heatsinking then

edit. actually just ran the light. it starts getting slightly warm at 20 secs. i ran it for a minute now, and the head is warm, not hot yet. but no way i would dare to run it for 3 mins.

It probably was not exactly 3 minutes, Im just guesstimating. It was every bit of 2 minutes though. I will do some heat tests the weekend.

I used thermal compund on all the threads of the head the get use of the fins to disapate the heat.

Someone elses hot, may be anothers warm too.

Ken

thats true, but still, you have one bad ass mofo light .10, 000 lumens at that size and can be ran for a few minutes is super!
your medium mode is prolly my high mode on mine, and you can prolly run it on that mode for over 10 mins .

Man, the more I think about what you've done, the more I'm thinking of doing soemthing similar to the J18 - taskled hyperboost driver, 7 XM-L2 U2's on copper, etc. It would be a mini version of yours but thinking I could exceed 6,000 lumens with it for sure, maybe hit 7,000, a whole lot cheaper - $45 host (WallBuys), ~$45 driver, about $35 in LED/stars using IOS's XM-L2 U2 1A or 1C's on Noctigons (at qty 10, they are $5 each!). Think that's about half your cost. The taskled driver seems vastly superior to anything else out there - just don't understand it all yet - not much info.

I have to say, for only doing this flashlight/laser stuff since about March, I have learned a lot!

My AK-90 does not have modes. Its all or nothing. The HBflex driver that Taskled has, does have modes. I will put the HB flex in my shorty 12 XML light when I get it from Kaidomain.

Ken

Do it! You could probably turn the current up even more with “only 7” leds. Hehe!

The formula that taskled has on his site is what I have been using. The formula uses lowest voltage of your batteries so your very safe.

Ken

And now you want to add another 4000mAh to this light? If you make it any bigger you’re also going to need a surplus MG42 tripod to mount this thing on. :stuck_out_tongue:

Haha! This is definitely be a strap light.

Ken

Do you have a Trustfire X6? That comes with a sling. Or perhaps go tactical with a Magpul single-point or some other such nonsense
