Review: Sky Ray 3800 3 x XM-L

Didn't someone on here order that one and it turned out to be less bright than the one from Manafont?

I'm not sure how they could have, I posted it here about an hour after it hit KD, if that. Not to mention, when you search the forum here, you get...

I guess I have it confused with something else. Thanks for the info!

Mine showed up today suddenly with no update from USPS so I was surprised.

I can't add any more than has already been said-it obliterates every other light I have with NO green in the tint at all. My tweaks were: Resoldering poor solder joints on the clickie and the spring on the driver, cleaning everything and making sure everything is nice and tight. Light came to me flickering and the tweaks fixed it.

Questions: Has anyone used 18650 IMR's? Not gonna be the guinea pig this time!

Also, I'd love to get a big glow ring for the head like in the UF-980L. Anyone know where I could find some?

My recommendation: Just go get it!! Wonderful light.

Rich

WOW I got mine today. Also got some new test leads.

Tailcap measurements

trustfire flames 3.15

soshine 3.13

samsung 2.98

xtar 4.1 OMG settled to 3.89 The xtars were not fully charged. Only 3.85 volt

Will top up all batteries and re test.

So in order to fully drive all 3 (before they start putting out a ton of heat), it would have to be drawing about 9 amps, assuming the driver was 100% efficient. So more like 12 amps from the tail. Or am I misunderstanding how the drivers work in these multi-LED lights?

Hmm... I can't wait for some lightbox readings of these various new ~$50 3x XM-L lights. Especially that new TrustFire I linked yesterday. My friend Lee ordered one yesterday, can't wait to find out how it is. I might have to order it before he gets it, simply to make sure I get it before it's sold out / backordered.

update:

2.8 A with freshly charged xtar 2600

You say it doesn't throw that good. Does this mean it really doesn't throw well at all or is it more because of the strong flood?

It'll throw ok, but not like a dedicated thrower. Basically like a really bright p60 xml drop in. IOW don't buy it for throw, but it'll make do if you ever need it.

This is pretty solid light all around. The only problem on mine was lens rattle.

The thing is, people would mistakenly think that 3x the XM-L means it should light up something really well even if its far away. But it does not. So we'd not wanna risk people condemning a good light just because "they are mistaken". As in.....Hey folks, I gotta say that this light is all hyped up and its not performing well for my copy. My Olight XP-G is better.

100m Beam shots :

Sky Ray 3 x T6. As you can see it lights up much more real estate, real good for < 100m usage.

Well I think most of the time i won't need to light up an area at more then 100m i think. The UF 980l is half the lumens of the sky ray if i'm not mistaking? So yes by that i know definely see that the throw is on a whole different level.

greetings

Yes, the UF-980L has roughly half the lumens of the Sky Ray 3xT6.

I was thinking about buying the sky ray and the kd C8 which should roughly has the same specifications as the UF-980l. So i guess the throw on that one will be good next to the flood from the skyray.

If you want lumens and lux, you should go for Sky Ray STL-V2 or Fandyfire STL-V6 (both prob same light). STL-V6 is usd46 shipped. Then get the 3xT6. Get 1 set of good quality batts like Hi-Max 2600 (in fact get 6 in a set, cheaper), and then get 1 or 2 pairs of generic IMR 18500 from bestinone.net. You can run both big reflectorerd XM-L and 3 x T6 in shorty mode which is 180mm long and 57mm head dia, with the 2 x 18500. Just a wee bit longer/bigger than KD C8. But throw performance of the STL-V6 big reflector will be amazing and not give you a "drinking straw spotlight effect".

I got my SR 3800 yesterday and its an amazing light imo, Indoor use lights a whole room up at night like its daytime. I cant really take it outside where i live so i can only do wall beam comparisons. It has no really defined hotspot like most lights, Just one big bright circle thats 2x the size of my other XM-L 2x 18650 light.

I tore mine down for cleaning, Lube and thermal compound application and any filler spots where i can make thermal dissipation better. The light didn't need cleaned and threads were lubed, I added more lube to cover the o-rings better. I also used thermal compound on the head and body connection threads, But couldn't find any way to improve thermal dissipation with the .016" aluminum sheets i have.

I have a Beamtech XM-L T6 2x 18650 and the SR 3800 will over power it when i place the beams on top of each other, And thats despite the more focused beam of the BeamTech.

Overall its a top notch light well worth the money.

Here is my video of my new light.

The wait is over (for me anyway). Enjoy.

Glad to see you got that battery in right

Any numbers about run time in different modes? I'm planning to use trustfire flames as they seem to be quite reliable for cheap batteries.

Hello I've been on CPF for years, but my first post here :) I ordered this light a few days ago and it still says "processing" can somebody tell me how long it usually takes for manafont to actually send the order out? I know DX takes forever it seems, is manafont quicker in that regard?

Great forum here, lots of useful info.

Thanks!

Yeah, manafont is certainly quicker in general. It is normally less than 2 days before you get a 'dispatched' notice. For lights in high demand however sometimes they take a while longer if there is a stock shortage. Still it shouldn't be anywhere near as long a wait as DX.
