I put a 10 degree optic in my S2+. It’s beam size is about the same as it was with the shallow stock reflector, but it is more intense. The result is a brighter beam with less spill. I find it more useful for indoors, outdoors in the yard, or on a walk.
The ten degree optic I used came with a white holder. The optic, together with the holder, is the same height as the stock reflector. I didn’t need a spacer in my S2+. The holder needed a little trimming to fit in the host head. A nice thing about using the holder was that it kept the optic relatively centered and focused.
Where to buy exactly these in low quantities? (45, 60 degree and stripe lens interest me). On aliexpress store (330416) I see different lenses but not sure which are which and min order is 10 pcs for each
That stripe lens looks really nice for biking. I don’t think the lens would fit any lights I currently have though… would be nice if the stripe pattern could be purchased as a diffuser film instead of a lens replacement.
LED-DNA sells singles. I paid 40 cents for a 10 degree optic. I believe they had the sizes you mentioned in stock. I also purchased an XM-L2 on a sinkpad. Shipping was free. The package arrived in about 17 days.
Mine came with an orange peel reflector. Here is a picture of the reflector that came in the flashlight. It is identical to the one that came with my S3 host.
Left: S3; Middle: S2+ Reflector; Right: S2+ with 10 degree TIR
Here is a comparison beamshot. Sorry for the low quality, as the iPad isn’t really suited to this kind of shot.
Left: S3; Right: S2+ with 10 Degree TIR
This isn’t really a fair comparison. My S3 has an XM-L U2 1A, and my S2+ has an XM-L2 U2 1C. Since the reflector from the S2+ is identical to the one in the S3, I thought it might be a somewhat useful comparison.
I can say that the hotspot of the S2+ is about the same size now, with the TIR, as it was with the reflector. It is noticeably more intense now, with less spill. The beam profile of the S3 is quite similar to the original beam profile of the S2+ with reflector.
Thanks for posting the link. I especially like the SMO reflectors that fit the S2. $5.33 for 3 reflectors? Hmm. I only have two S2 flashlights, so I’d have to build another S2, wouldn’t I?
