Use the lens to replace the relfector of Convoy S2+ flashlight

Mine came with an orange peel reflector. Here is a picture of the reflector that came in the flashlight. It is identical to the one that came with my S3 host.

Left: S3; Middle: S2+ Reflector; Right: S2+ with 10 degree TIR

Here is a comparison beamshot. Sorry for the low quality, as the iPad isn’t really suited to this kind of shot.

Left: S3; Right: S2+ with 10 Degree TIR

This isn’t really a fair comparison. My S3 has an XM-L U2 1A, and my S2+ has an XM-L2 U2 1C. Since the reflector from the S2+ is identical to the one in the S3, I thought it might be a somewhat useful comparison.

I can say that the hotspot of the S2+ is about the same size now, with the TIR, as it was with the reflector. It is noticeably more intense now, with less spill. The beam profile of the S3 is quite similar to the original beam profile of the S2+ with reflector.

Thanks for posting the link. I especially like the SMO reflectors that fit the S2. $5.33 for 3 reflectors? Hmm. I only have two S2 flashlights, so I’d have to build another S2, wouldn’t I?

Do you have a link? I’m looking on LED-DNA and I only see 15, 45 & 60* ones.

10 Degree Optic

The optic is identical to the one sold on Aliexpress:
10 Degree Optic, Lot of 10

Ah thank you, didn’t realize they had their own site, I was on their eBay site.

Thank you for the comparison!

On topic enough, I hope, but I recently got some TIR’s, and they didn’t lens the spill (the light from front of LED), so they still have the cold coloured spill and the warm reflected area…
Now how silly is that? :^\
And who knows what you get, as many sellers use the same pictures…
Anyway, I thought it was something to mention for when you are out there on the quest for the perfect TIR deal.

CNQG has TIR optics

So does Fasttech

Been using a 10* TIR in my D4 tube light for around a year and love the smooth beam. Current incarnation is TIR from fastech, dedomed xml2 T6-4D and 3 x 7135 driver. And its actually too bright as a EDC the hotspot hurts my eyes at less than 10’!

What I don’t like about reflectors is the tunnel light effect, with TIR you can see things in peripheral vision much better.
Plus once it gets dirty/scratched just pop a new one in, reflectors always seem to get dirty even tho try hard to seal the dust out. I don’t have a lens in mine and it takes a couple of months to get to the point it needs changing. That’s with heavy everyday use. Much cheaper than buying a lens+reflector every couple of months.

Good mod

You can get the Carclo line of optics @ LEDSupply for very reasonably prices (<$1.50) apiece and free shipping in the US. I imagine the quality is superior. I just picked up a little variety to see how well they perform!

I have a Carclo 10003, but was disappointed with the result. I tried it with and without the holder, and couldn’t get as nice of a beam as I could with the one I got from LED-DNA. The beam ended up taking on the square shape of the emitter most of the time. I’ve heard that they work pretty well if you can get the focus right by using the right combination of spacers. It certainly wasn’t a simple drop-in upgrade for my S2+. I didn’t try any of the other Carclo optics, as the 10003 had the tightest beam of any of the Carclo optics I found easily obtainable.

Huh. Well, I’ll see what I can do and post up the results! I ordered the 10003, –15, –25, and the -L25.

Sweet!

For S2+ and stripe lens - the lens was loose (tested in two different S2+; doing exactly the same as on video in this thread). Used additional o-ring on the front (https://www.fasttech.com/p/1088604; so two in total since there is one already there) and now stripe lens isn’t loose.

Using additional o-ring also makes these optics fit S3.

Not sure which exact ones he uses but based on the order form it looks like Richard at Mountain Electronics uses some of these lenses designed for the S2 lights for his 3 LED Triple XP-G2 high output “S3” light. I will know more when the one I have on order arrives. Richard lists the lens option I ordered as the 10511 and describes it as the one most closely resembling a standard reflector beam.

Why do you find the square pattern a problem? I happen to thing it is really good. and from my understanding that is about as tight as you can get.

I am wanting to get a Convoy Sx X being 2 2+ 3 4 5 6 or 7

I am going to convert one of the above to a 219B light. I think I would like to add a 10 degree to this light, but the LED’s are a different size. Would I be locked into using a Carclo in this combination?

Thanks Matt

My Convoy s2+ came in today. Managed to install the TIR lens from LEDDNA. It fits nicely, did not have to trim the white holder. Merely pushed the thing in with a little force.
