WTF, I just pointed out that if this is a concern to you, then you should probably avoid buying any chinese lights because they pretty much never do SOS properly. If you want to blame someone, blame all the reviewers on this site for not pointing this out (or rather not giving a damn) when they carefully examined every aspect of this light.

Yes, and all the previous great reviews on it including by the admin of this site were all bribed by UF. Recall this is during a promo for another vendor who offered it for a higher price and quite limited availability. If you're going to make that accusation, then please do it in the open so we can all point and laugh.

Perhaps it's just a problem of expectations. This light, along with the rest of the UF "U" series, pretty much represent the high end of the product line from them and china in general. They still have some issues, esp. internally, like some 980L's tendency to kill themselves, which I would consider a more significant problem than the little issues this light has. But even at regular price, they're half the cost of a premium name brand like Zebralight (and in this case, half the price again), and the buyer can choose whether that significant difference is worth the small foibles.

I'm not sure why I have to make this kind of speech on BLF instead of CPF, though, esp. to someone who doesn't seem to have any problem buying similar products.

I think it is ok, basically from what I see 99.3% of the guys are happy with their orders. Heck my country's air parcel (registered) already costs half the price of the light.

most likely my last reply regarding this issue: I hope when I become a flashlight manufacturer and put out a defective light, that ALL you reviewers who said "nice light, good quality, great price, etc, etc, etc, and "we don't care about whether SOS works properly or not", would extend the same grace to me. That would 'encourage me to continue to cut corners and deceive the masses in order to make just a few more $.

saypat, just to be clear, nobody said you're not entitled to be disappointed with a SOS that's not really SOS, only that it's so common among the cheap lights to the point that nobody even bothers to point it out given it's relatively priority to the all the other problems that budget lights tend to have, like mandatory blinking modes in the first place.

Also, I don't know what you mean by "cut corners", but it doesn't actually cost less to program OSO vs SOS, so there's no profit in "deceiving" anyone. I think you can imagine the comparatively greater frustration of those of us who never wanted blinking modes but can't see to get any manufacturer to listen. At least on this light it's a separate UI to activate.

I'd have to agree that OSO or SOS is pretty low on what can go wrong with budget lights. I'd rather have no blinking modes generally as well.

I do (obviously) agree that DD seems (in general) to be a little more deceptive in the way they operate than many of the rest. I don't know that it's intentional. I think they just don't get it yet.

Regarding this particular light...I'm glad that most people are satisfied given that most (all) of the $8 lights failed. I think a lot of people were interested in this light for reasons other than as a headlamp. Even though it's somewhat modeled on the Zebralight I don't see how it can be floody with a XR-E unless it just doesn't have a reflector.

For those who are interested however I do see that it is at least a little cheaper (on DD) than it was before the group buy. It's now about $26 I think.

Even though it's somewhat modeled on the Zebralight I don't see how it can be floody with a XR-E unless it just doesn't have a reflector

It uses a lens (not unlike a small out of focus aspheric). It's the same as what the classic Zebralight headlamp does, hence it's a "clone". :)

Ah! I have a couple of Zebralights but I've never seen the older ones that were total flood.

I received my light today, took less than 2 weeks. I'd like to sincerely thank agenthex and summer, even though they're in cahoots and pulled this scam over on me...I wish you could scam me like this every day, but I'd go broke My experience with DD was as good as with any other Chinese company I've used, and I will use them again based on this experience.

This is an outstanding light for the money. Packaging was great, and the light came in a box with the headband, all in perfect condition. The build quality exceeds the price, the variable brightness is excellent though a little fast, and I love the 100% flood beam. This is a perfect reading light...which is one of my 'things'...always on the hunt for a perfect floody light, throwers suck for reading. I do fear for my life however (haha), seeing as the SOS mode isn't quite right, like so many Chinese lights.

Seriously though, if someone is going to nitpick something as minor as that, I truly believe that person would be much happier at CPF....that's more the type over there. You can pay many times what this light cost and expect everything to be flawless, but not for $16 imho. The nature of budget lights is that none are perfect, many need repairs, mods, tweaks etc, and that's what so many of us love to do...we're tinkerers and tightwads. Stepping off the soapbox and congratulating myself for showing such restraint.

happy camper Dave

I don't think implying that someone that one doesn't agree with should go to CPF is behaving any differently than CPF where they constantly imply that one who doesn't agree with them can leave.

I've noticed that several people do this (using CPF as a label for someone you disagree with) rather than just addressing the issues raised.

This is no room for diversity at CPF. It's different here.

Well, thatnks for all your good reviews on this item. I do hope more people will know this and get this good deal, but my topic on CPFmarket has been locked by the admin there, i am sorry that they do not have a chance to have an experience on this headlamp.

Alright... Issue - OSO instead of SOS. This is a flood light. If you are 200-300m away or less where the SAR can see you/your light doing SOS, you are also pretty much also going to shout to them. That is the around max range of visibility of this light by another party. So non-issue. :) Besides, they see different blink rates they are also going to respond.

Another way to signal far away vessels is to light 3 fires with similar distances between them. In nature there are no sources of smoke/fire which are of 3 sources of similar distance.

2km away, 10km away.... i don't think any SAR team can see your floody light. This is 59 lux @ 1m. If they are wearing gen 3 NVG they are probably going to respond as well.

gcbryan, i guess some are just super pissed off with the other side. LOL! I do not blame them.

NiMH - 1.1A 59 lux @ 1m

14500 - 0.45A 103 lux @ 1m

So it is good. 1A on a 14500 with a XR-E is going to just burn it up

Thanks for doing this deal, very nice torch for the money. It does what a torch is supposes to do- light up an area for you to see.

saypat if you bought this torch to use as a rescue signaling device you have no real idea, so to keep you happy, send me your paypal name and I will buy both the torch off you including the postage, you can put the money towards a pack of flares.

After seeing the torch, I would gladly buy more to give to other people.

Maybe you should run this deal again here and see the interest since the thread at CPF was locked. I bet you will get at least 20+ more sales.

I had a great experience on this deal. It's strange to see some people harping on what is a common defect when the light is great. The defect is insignificant so we shouldn't make a mountain out of a molehill.

Been Seen Triker, it really is backwards, OSO. Thing is, (1) if a SAR is out in full force searching for your grp who has been missing due to a major incident, do you think they are going to ignore a dash dash dash dot dot dot dash dash dash because it does not fit correct terminology / SOP? (2) I'd be bringing not a flood light only to the wilderness w/o light, but a much more capable thrower as well with spare batts etc. Who brings only a small AA 90 deg 100lm flood light anyway, these stuff are for reading and cooking etc. If you really want to signal a plane or sea vessel several clicks away, you want a triple XM-L (lux + wide beam, easier to aim), not a 59 candle power light.

Got my 2 UF-H2 from this deal yesterday. Actually arrived last thursday, been away though. Both came in the boxes in an envelope, no damage at all. One has a slight mark on the inside of the lens but doesn't affect the beam in any way. I already have one from KD for about a year now, stuck to fridge, so knew what I was getting. The UF-H3, which is in my tool bag, would have been nicer for run time but price was good for these.

First time dealing with DD, was iffy after reading about them both here and "the other place" Sealed, but their email updates and his posting here, I think I'd try them again on the other "deal" thread.
