New Home Depot Defiant 3D Tear Down photos and measurements

Thanks for sharing .

Looks like it uses XML2 leds… first time that I’ve seen /2 LEDs in a mass marker light.

XP-G2 leds. They are way too small to be XM-L2

EDIT: Definitely XP sized leds. I just compared them to XM sized.

A bit disappointing, thanks for the info though.

The build is at least original, nice big MCPCB, the driver has exposed generously tinned pads for some heat dissipation, being wrapped in kapton tape is not only electrically insulating the driver but also thermally.

Would anyone not use anodizing since it's the most common aluminum finish? anodizing can be very poor also.

Thanks for the tear down OL. If its not to late what diameter do you think each individual reflector would be if it was a full circle?

Thank you very much. Great pictures and info. No wonder I couldn't get that retaining ring off.

Unless that MCPCB is direct bond copper (I'm betting it's aluminum), it appears to have very poor heat sinking. I see no trace coming out from under the thermal pad part of the emitters. Any info on that?

I like the head. If the price goes down enough, this might be good host material.

Thanks again.

I still have it at home. I did not have time to take it back before work, so I can check when I get home.

It's an aluminum mcpcb and it is strange looking. I haven't seen one like that before. I didn't get super serious with it, but I would think it should suffice for the XP-G2 leds on there. There is a solid shelf below the star and it looks to be about 1-1.5mm thick. I just don't see modding it, as there are better lights for that at about the same price, but since it is here in the US, it is handy to get.

I just picked up one from home depot today. Overall not a bad light compared to what you would expect to find at home depot, but nothing special, especially compared to what we normally see around here for $30. I mostly wanted something that ran on primaries to replace the 2D maglight that stays in my truck since all my other bright (>150 lm) LED lights run on lithium.

When they drop below $20 I’ll get one. That threading and that finish, now way it’s a $30 light.

Thanks for the great images OL. It's always interesting to look at the inside. More stuff in there than most folks think!!

Thanks Again. Dan

I’m sorry, I forgot to say thanks as well. I really appreciate you breaking it down for review.

I think the inherent design has potential. 3 XP-G2s in really deep reflectors merged a little at the top, all driven off of 4 amps? That to me seems like it could have some serious throw and a good bit of spill as well. The star is a bit unique but it may well be workable. As a modding base it might not be terribly practical but it’s a D-cell light that has more horsepower than a MagLite can ever hope to have, and for maybe $20 it would be worth it.

…And it gives one a reason to buy a pair of 32650’s. 0:)

The moral decline of America has reached Tyler TX.

Taking a light completely apart and planning on returning it, shame on you! Complete disregard for the honor system. Nothing wrong with the light. No fault of the manufacturer, certainly no fault of the seller.

What a shame.

Bite Me.Tongue Out Just joking wid ya…

I guarantee one thing, after I tear one down and put it back together, it's better than it was new. The threads are all lubed and everything is tight instead of loose or misaligned. It will go back on the shelf and someone will buy it and throw it in the back of their pickup truck, till it looks just like the pile of beer cans it got thrown into...

These just went on clearance sale at a local HD for $7 bucks each.
I found three of them & picked them up. May mod one to a shorty single 26650 or use the others to modify the heads as Snowplow auxiliary lights on my truck with high & low beams.

1000 lumen…bahahahaha

Not when you’re done with it OL >)

Oh a 28mm driver? I wonder if Mattus’s knucklehead with that much room would work out better, or wights buck driver….hmmmm

They have a new version of it currently on sale for $25. Is the one mentioned in this thread different than this one - http://www.homedepot.com/p/Defiant-1000-Lumens-LED-Flashlight-HD14Q407/205183463

Is this newer model any better than last years?

Thanks,

EDIT: Never mind, I found the thread here - New Defiant lights at Home Depot (Pics added)

Anybody know of a 3D battery tube with a side switch that will fit this light? I don’t like tail switches on a light this large. Does anybody know if the battery tube from a Defiant 51 LED light w/ its 4aa battery pack would work with this light? Will the threads be compatible? Would there be any problems with voltage?

^ I don't have the 3D light to check for you, but it sounds like a really cool idea.
