Jax Z1 XP-G2 S2 dedomed @5A

I absolutely love the look of that light in shorty mode. Next time use the FET driver in it.

Twist. And very smooth, too.

Hi Kenjii, I did a similar mod on the Uniquefire UF-1406 (here) and I am curious about how they compare. Are you able to measure the output (in lumens) of the modded Jax at zoom-in and zoom-out?

Vinh is now modding this bad boy with an array of different LED’s

Hy,

no unfortuantly i can´t measure lumens. Never did ceiling bounce, too. I am only interested in Lux/candles

Yes, i saw the Z1vn but i don´t think they will be comparable to mine as Vinh uses a single cell driver, so it will be almost impossible to reach stable high currents. MT-G2 and SBT-70 are nice but i think they might produce too much heat for this host.

Hy,

the second Z1 for our man in Amsterdam is finished. Both lights perform almost identically. Measured 225-228 KLux/Kcd.

Beamshot slightly overexposed due to foggy weather

cool beam shot and great work.

Now listed as Host-only: Jax Z1 Host

and the Lens: Jax Z1 Lens

Wow, love that last pic

Hi, er, when taking the Z1 apart, did you have any trouble getting the pill out?

I’m trying to unscrew the pill, or unscrew the black retaining plate at least, and it gets really stuck after about one turn. I managed to bend my tools trying to get it to turn farther.

At a guess, it looks like the black plate might be glued onto the pill or star, and might perhaps have different threading than the pill. So, they turn in sync. It turns easily at first, but rapidly gets difficult and stuck.

So, I’m looking for advice on getting past that, to get the pill out.

Hy,

i had no problems taking out both parts. There was no connection between pill and black plate. I could unscrew the black plate by pressing it with two fingers. Threads are surely different but as i said there shouldn´t be a connection between pill and plate. Perhaps the centerring ring on the LED is stuck at the plate?

It’s too bad I ordered this just a few days before the host version was released.

It seems like the pill, star, and black plate are pretty solidly glued together. I’m hoping I can let it sit in the maximum-unscrewed state for a while to stretch the glue, unscrew it a little more, stretch, unscrew a little more, etc… and eventually get the pill out. With any luck, doing this will actually stretch the glue instead of compressing it…

I had heard that the MCPCB was glued on with something pretty strong, but I wasn’t expecting the black plate to be stuck too. Glue is a lot easier to deal with after the pill is out.

Hy,

my Z1 is now running with the LED4Power LD-1 5A Driver and an Efest Purple 26650. Short, strong, good runtime  Measured at 212 KLux@1m/Kcd.

Our man in Amsterdam give it to me.

Will try with LD1 and a Photon Collar (Aluminium)

Thanks Kenjii

That looks very neat, Kenjii.

I got an empty host and put it together with a de-domed XP-G2 and BLF22DD driver. However, the optic is slightly deformed (right in the center) so it gets lower throw than it should. With the battery at 4.10V, it clocked in at only 173 kcd. I assume it would be higher with a totally full cell, but it’s still lower than expected, and I can see a weird asymmetric blob to one side of the beam while focusing it.

So, I may see about getting another optic. It’s still pretty good as-is, just not as much as I expected.

Oooh that looks like a very tasty Zoomie/Aspheric thrower. Tempted to pick up the host and do some tinkering, I like the look of the coated lens as well.
Interesting stuff! Thanks for posting.

Great job upgrading this light….looks like you found a good way to improve its lux.

I myself had this light. I took the heatsink with driver and star out and put it inside a 2C Maglite LED. The heatsink fits 99%. You just dremel a hair off inner diameter of Mag or threads off the heatsinks. Not as much throw but great sleeper 2C Mag.

Hy,

i had that problem with one of the Z1´s I modded, too. This was because the lens went out of center when screwing the bezel. Try to screw the bezel while the light is switched on and hold the lens in position. You can see that ugly blob travel when pressing the lens to the side. Perhaps a little bit of lube on the o-ring can help, too.

Kenjii

Thanks! I’ll try that.

I’m doubtful, since I can see the distortion even when the lens isn’t in the light. It’s actually deformed right at the center. I’ll try it anyway though.
