Home Depot Deal Alerts & Discussion Thread

Or the “Make a Home Depot employee your buddy, so you know when they are getting rid of the dollar stoves, fridges and freezers” thread.

Actually, our zen expert can just start selling all the one cent stuff for two cents plus shipping!

Just my "two cents worth".

I left with 2 Li-ion Ryobi packs (identical to mine - the smaller capacity ones) and 2 Rigid packs which I suspect are NiCd packs (they don't say anywhere on them what they are, just "18 volt" and they are heavy). I have not tested them and I need torx security bits to get them opened up. The Ryobi's I'll just charge up and try in my drill.

You can get a nice small set of security bits at HF. They are usually 3.99 when on sale. Don’t forget to bring a 20 or 30% off coupon! When I first open a pack I immediately measure and write the voltage on each cell.

Donald Trumps people recently contacted me. It seems he is writing a sequel to his famous book “The Art of the Deal” and they wanted to interview me. :stuck_out_tongue:

If you’re feeling slightly violent, you can often use a very small nailset to knock out the center post on various security bits, thus turning them into non-security screws. Just give it a sharp shot, at as much angle as you can manage. (Sometimes easier said than done.)

Warning: if you aren’t lucky, you’ll just bend the post and no driver bit will remove the screw. (That said, it’s never happened to me.)

Thanks for the tip! Just checked my two Ryobi packs One reading 5.09v and charging now. The other reading 0.07v :( . Might have to tear that one down.

You know you guys want one of these to mod.

Depending on the screw you can just use clean/fresh torx bits, two steady hands, and some patience. I tore down two Rigid packs recently (nothing good in them) which had security-torx screws. The post in the middle wasn’t quite tall enough to prevent me from using regular torx bits as long as I kept everything very square.

I take apart so many pack’s I took the multi-bit folding thing I got from HF and cut the size I needed off and chuck that in my drill.

Back OT over the weekend I walked up and down every single isle at my HD and there wasnt a single sale price that ended with 3 or 6, pretty dissapointing :(. I also scanned every single clearance / sale tag and everything was priced same as the tag stated. I dont think they do the clearance thing here. A few weeks ago I found an open 6pk of 9v energizer’s and it was only priced 5% off and never sold, I got it out of the recycling pack.

Well one of the Ryobi packs charged up and I've been using it in my small trim saw (small circular saw). Battery indicator dropped kind of quick to 1 bar, but I don't use the trim saw often enough to know how long a battery should last in it.

The other battery, well it turn out not so good. Wouldn't charge up (charger indicated "defective"). Pack had some rust marks on the outside too. So here is what I found inside:

So I put the case back together and will drop it back off for the recycling bin.

Hi dchomak - Thankyou for posting thise pictures of the flashlight’s.

Our home depot did not have a nice display of them like that in your Home Depot but our’s carried a few new nifty flashlight’s

I bought one of the new ones the look’s like the 1000 lumen triple Led light in your picture At our home Depot but this one was 1500 lumen and had three XM-L2 led’s in it inside fairly deep reflector’s and takes 4 D cell batteries (This one—> http://www.homedepot.com/p/Defiant-1500-Lumen-LED-Flashlight-HD14Q420/205317037 ) I noticed one with ripped packageing and picked it up and an employee walked by and said ” I can get you a discount on that one” and I asked how much he said let’s take it to the register and find out when we went to the register he entered a code that rang up as a $20 gift card and asked me how is that price?,I bought it on the spot (regular price here $34.88).

I tested the light using 4 Tenergy Premium Ni-MH Rechargeables against my Trustfire J-19 and the beam’s are about I dentical with the home depot model having a warmer tint and a slightly larger hotspot and a hair brighter overall (My J-19 is not modded)….a very nice light even at full price I now use the light as a bedside light next to a smaller Nitefighter f21c for pistol carry just in case.

Did you notice I fany of those light’s had newer Led’s in them?

It seems that XML2, XPG2, and XPE2 emitters have found their way into most flashlights, I got a rayovac headlamp that sports an XPE2 and an defiant headlamp that sports a XPG2 emitter and a turbo mode that is in excess of 200 lumens on eneloop AAAs.

I am noticing this to.

I personaly like this shift from seeing these led’s in just Chinese light’s and expensive USA light’s into affordable USA light’s that more folk’s can afford and experience. Exciting stuff.

Still like my modded Chinese light’s of course.

That’s a great deal you got there. I just checked online at all the stores around here and by gauging in store stock it seems that this light is a new offering, not just old stock that has laying around awhile. To get that light with that heavy discount this early in it’s run is very good.
That is one of the “Holiday” lights, this one

As far as newer emitters go, pretty much any light that would have used an XP-G is now using an XP-G2 and XM-L’s have gone over to the XM-L2

FWIW I was just in an Auto Zone earlier today and I was surprised to see that their ~$20 3xAA lights were using XP-E/XP-G (I ignored die size. The dome on the one I looked closely at had a huge scuff across it that distracted me!). It could have been old stock, who knows. This was in the checkout area, so I assume that they do turn these over relatively quickly.

Yeah, I see that kind of stuff too. I think that must be old stock. I actually was thinking of the new lights in Home Depot and Lowes.
Earlier this year someone here posted about a 3-C light at Autozone that was reduced to $10. I went out and got it. It is actually a pretty good light with an XP-G.

Notice the date, 03/18/14. Clearance price ends in 3 and the date is old enough to have gone to a penny.

I learned a new piece of information this week. A waitress at a restaurant we go to each Saturday is also a cashier at Home Depot. I told her about the penny deals I come across and she said she knew about them. HD’s policy is to ring them up and then the cashier is supposed to call the department head to let them know what happened so they can remove any remaining stock.

The pictured light above did ring up for a penny, there were three, and the self checkout helper noticed that they did. She came over to me and asked if there were more. Occasionally this question was asked of me before and I always thought it was because they wanted to get one for themselves. Turns out, that was so they could alert the department head.

Earlier in the week I came across these wire nuts that rang up for a penny. Had a date of 1/14/14, I don’t know how they lasted so long.

This is not a deal price wise, but it is good to know. Super strong Neodymium disc magnets in a HD, 3.98 per pack.

Can they explain why they would rather throw them away then sell them?

Well, I would assume that if they sell you something for a penny they could be satisfying a potential customers need for that item. They would then miss out on the opportunity to make a sale of a similar item at full markup.
By selling for a penny, they damage themselves, it’s better for them to throw it out. :frowning:

they could just reduce to a clearance price, price the item to be thrown away at the profit margin on the other item
