"Thor K 2012" -An Lk14 build (600 watt Q4559X)

This was my first flashlight modding project, back in the fall of 2012. The “LarryK 14” is a spotlight mod named after it’s original creator. The idea is that a PAR 64 airplane landing bulb such as the 600 watt GE Q4559X will fit fairly easily into certain models of off the shelf spotlights. A small group of people on CPF have built these. A few of them are regulated, not unlike the one featured in this thread.

The bulb is rated for 100 hours at 28v, so it is already driven pretty hot at the rated voltage. The regulator board maintains 30 volts to the bulb which puts out some 15,000+ lumens. The battery pack is 5,000mah total, consisting of two 6s 5000mah zippy lipo’s in 12S1P (50.4v) configuration. The PWM makes the bulb BUZZZZ and sound really awesome when it’s running. It sounds like raw electrical power.

My original thread on CPF is here.

BEAMSHOTS: Sometimes I strap up and take my lights for a walk.

Distance: 962 feet [292 meters] to that barn.
SR-90 beamshots for comparison:(click to enlarge photos)

The black figure is a horse!

Distance: 830 feet [253 meters] to that house and outbuilding. The beam is aimed between the two structures but lights them both up.

Distance: 1300 feet [396 meters] to the railroad crossing.

Distance: 1150 feet [350 meters] to the pole. That’s a plowed field of brown dirt.

What an amazing light Hoop. I love every bit of it. Is it still going strong after two years with the original battery pack? Thanks for showing us here.

Nice light!
i have a yellow version of the same light i converted to a 55-watt HID. I like these lights for the wow-factor to the general public.
thats probably the most powerful incandescent hand-held like i seen so far.

Wow! How far can these lights throw?

usually quite far for an incan because of the huge reflector, mod them up like this one and its a mega-thrower.

Sweet. I love those. Got one off Craigslist a few months ago. You need to put a popular flashlight next to it to give folks a better sense of it's size. Congrats on the 2 year old.

Such, a , beautiful, COLOUR!! 8D

Thanks for the kind words guys.

The batteries have been charged less than a dozen times and I leave them at storage voltage so I bet they are doing pretty good. They only ever provided 10-15 minutes runtime because of the crazy wattage, but this light is more for just scanning across a field for a minute or two anyway, if I were to assign it a practical purpose. Good to have when “Fluffy” goes missing.

Realistically this sucker is good out to beyond 1,100 feet [350m] while also lighting maybe a couple hundred feet wide. The beamshots in the original CPF thread are labeled with the distances and can be clicked to reveal the original unresized images. They are pretty indicative of what the light actually looks like, though there is more spill in person.

As far as its size, it is not bad. The head is about 9” diameter. When wearing the shoulder strap the light sits nicely against the hip. I’ve taken walks with it and hopped fences wearing it with no problem.

Whoah!!!

Yeah, this light is insane! A perfect mix of mega-throw, flood and good CRI. :open_mouth:

Its really awesome as demonstrated by your 1500 meter beam shot at the rail road crossing. It beats the hell out of my flooders and throwers combined.

Can this be beaten by an MT-G2 mod on the Thor?

Awesome build! Thank you for sharing all the nitty gritty details too about parts and approx. prices.
