Lowes Deal Alerts & Discussion Thread

The reflector and lens is plastic, the lens is held in place by a threaded ring. I have also seen that used in the Defiant 3D light from last year.

That is a good sized pill and the driver is secured in place with a threaded ring.

Lots of thread to make good thermal contact between the pill and the head of the flashlight. BTW, all threads were lubed or had thermal paste on them.

The pill is solid for good heat transfer from the star. Unfortunately the driver is potted. That compound is rock hard and I don’t think it could ever be removed without destroying the components underneath. Maybe the part # of the board can give us a clue as to what it really is. I know this, there is an inductor underneath all of that. I can see parts of it protruding from the edges.

The star with the XP-G2 LED. To me it looks like too much thermal compound was used. It is soft and I will remove the star and fix that later.

The plastic reflector and the centering ring.

I tested the tailcap current with the supplied Alkalines and got 2.05A on high, 0.45A on low. I was worried that this light wouldn’t work with NiMH but it turns out that is not a problem. In fact I measured the same exact tailcap current with them. In fact even at a 3.6V partially depleted Li-Ion cell gave the same tailcap reading. Lastly, running the light on just 1 NiMH cell, I measured a tailcap current of 1.82A and there was a very decent amount of light coming out of it.
For the past several years Lowes has offered the LED MagLites for their BF promotion. It could be that this year this is the light that unseats MagLite on BF. For that reason I have decided to compare the 2 with pictures and their beam shots.

Now the beam shots:
Lux Pro, 280 Lumen

The 2D MagLite with the reflector adjusted for maximum throw. Approx 130 Lumen

Conclusions? I like them both, decide for yourself.

Anyone see this light?

dchomak,

That's a pretty cool looking light. Liking that beefy pill. I think that light deserves it's own thread. Members will be doing some cool things with it and they shouldn't have to wade through this messy thread. It really is a cool light with a great feel in hand.

Yes, they have had an XP-G version of this light in the tool section for quite a while in a cardboard stand alone. I stopped at a Lowes' on the way home and they still had a tray of the older xp-g version, but now sitting in the flashlight isle. The one you alerted us to is a new XP-G2 version. Other than the emitter it looks identical.

I like that 2D; heck of a thick pill and a decent looking light. Not bad at all for $13.

I saw 2 Lux-Pro flashlights at Lowes that they have brought into the Holiday Gift section.

One is a 180 lumen at $9.97 http://www.lowes.com/pd_569176-51336-LP470C_0+2z8vj__?productId=50193509&Ntt=flashlights&pl=1&currentURL=%3FNtt%3Dflashlights%26page%3D1&facetInfo=$5%20-%20$10

The other is about a 90 lumen for $7.99

Both are advertised as being marked down. I don’t know anything about them, so perhaps someone else can comment.

Thanks, Ed.

Without actually looking at the lights, I would say they don't seem like much of a deal. They will likely be coming down in price. AAA have very limited capacity to start with. 3AAA does not have enough voltage (after sag) to properly drive modern emitters. If you like the lights, you could drop an 18500 in them without modification (well, a cardboard wrap to prevent rattle).

Now this chunky, masculine light sold like hot cakes for $20 last year. They were discounted to $10 today at the store I hit. With 4AAA it can better drive an emitter, but will still have limited capacity. The great thing is this light can easily be changed to fit a 26650. I still carry mine in my whatever car I'm driving everyday.

I modded one here.

I imagine 26650 cells don't fit this light. (I didn't get a chance to stop this evening.). The 2D LuxPro light.

-Garry

26650 generally will not fit a “C” cell light. There is plenty of width in a “D” cell light.

Oh duh! But what about length of two 26650's?

-Garry

Maybe shorten the tail cap spring, there might be just enough there. I don’t know if the stock driver could handle the extra voltage. I didn’t even test mine on a fully charged Li-ion. I didn’t want to blow it on the first night

Oh I wasn't thinking to use the stock driver. Just wondering about it as a host.

-Garry

Use one of the AA to D adapters with a AA dummy cell inserted and then just use 1 26650.
But if you are going to change to a Buck driver, then it doesn’t matter.

I’m gonna go out and try to find one tomorrow.
If it blows up, oh well, but doubt it will on one 26650 cell.
Later,

Keith

I know so many of the members would just pass over a “Lowes thread”
After all they’re just a hardware store, right?

I see my Lowe's now has more holiday stuff out. The Utilitech #0569183 light is a 3C light with XM-L2 and advertised at 500 lumens and there is a Utilitech #05969178 3X XP-G2 light there as well. It takes, get this - 9XAA batteries in it. It is advertised as 1000 lumens. They are $29.97 and $39.97 respectively.

I also want that Lux Pro LP1200C with 6xAA and the half OP, half SMO reflector. It would be great with 6 Eneloops and an MT-G2 at 3 amps.

I bought a couple of the Lux Pro 2D lights and I happen to have some 41mm glass lenses, so these will get modded.

Remember this deal? Hammer, 25 foot tape measure, knife, pliers and cutters. Normally $12.95 on clearance for $3.60. Now they are $1.80, got 5.

This was what the clearance cart looked like. No price, I had to bring one up to get it price checked.

This one is NOT a good deal!!!
A set of 2 Dorcy clamp lights for 49.99

But look, from now until BF it is half price, 24.99. Let’s see what it uses for emitters
First the larger of the 2, then the smaller clamplight

The really sad thing is that they will probably sell thru, bought by people because they look like they would make a nice gift. Yeah, right.
Now some stocking stuffers.

and the pouch’s for the locking pliers that was clearanced a couple of months ago.

First of all Happy Thanksgiving to you all

Old-Lumens-Thankyou for the heads-up on the new Utilitech light’s I went to Lowes website and noticed they are having a half price off the two light’s you mention.

I ordered two of the 500 lumen C battery xm-l2 flashlight’s as I do not own any that use this battery and I will let you all know what I think of them.

If they work out I will keep 1 and give the other as a Christmas gift if they don’t work out then both go as Christmas gift’s…lol

But for $15.97 each it was to much to resist.

The 3X XP-G2 model is half price to so anyone interested it’s a good time IMO to get one.

Woahowahwoah…$20? For that price its good for parts to stuff in the Defiant 650lm 3D I got last year. Its been sitting around without much of a purpose…

What part’s did you need for your 650 lumen defiant?

Did some of the part’s break?

There were a couple of version’s of the 650 lumen Defiant,I have a few of the XM-L2 650 lumen single mode Defiant’s as a well as a few of the current 600 lumen XM-L2 3-mode Defiant’s as well as some spare part’s.

Did you need some help with part’s?,maybe I can help let me know.

I couldn’t believe it myself to see the 3X XP-G2 and XM-l2 3C light’s going for under $20,here are the link’s if they can help anyone:

XM-L2 500 lumen model—> http://www.lowes.com/pd_569183-50584-LWFL1405_0?productId=50256751&Ntt=flashlight+utilitech&pl=1&currentURL=%3FNtt%3Dflashlight%2Butilitech&facetInfo=

I have never used Utilitech before or handled one because I do not live close to a lowe’s so do not have the chance to go there often so my purchase of the 500 lumen model is a kind of an experiment to I do notice they offer a 1 year warranty compared to Defiant offering a lifetime warranty which speaking of Defiant’s lifetime warranty they have made good on this with me first-hand by just letting me take a whole new flashlight from a store I did not even buy the damaged light at (just thought I’d point these thing’s out if it is an important concern to someone)

I missed the boat on the Defiant 3-up XP-G2 1000 lumen torch, but did get one of the good 3D-XM-L lights and have been looking for a way to give it some character, this is my solution.

I see,That’s cool this deal popped up for you.

What do you and other’s think about the triple XP-G2 light stock as-is for someone who does not own any flashlight’s with this Led in it?

Most of my flashlight’s are various XML’s with most being XM-L2’s and then have one sst-50 light and one sst-90 light.

I keep looking at the XP-G2 light since I bookmarked it,never used or owned a flashlight with this led in it.

Hey all I wanted to do a proper review of these light’s but I am short on time and have no way to take pictures but this light is very nice and I am very impressed with it.

It is very comfortable to hold and carry and seem’s built well it has 3 modes Hi-Low-Blink-off no memory you can turn it off at any time by holding down the power button for about 2 second’s.

The beam pattern remind’s me of the Trustfire X8 and clones beam profile but this light has a much larger and usable hotspot the low mode work’s great around the house and the hi mode work’s great outside about as far as I am able to shine around my home at this time is 100 yard’s and it makes it out the far fairly easy as there were some deer out feeding and I could see them clearly at this distance.

The width of the reflector is about 25% larger than the Trustfire X8 and the overall beam size including flood is about 25% larger also. The hotspot is very impressive and is perfectly round and larger then any XML light I have seen or used and keep’s it’s intensity very well at farther distances this could be due to the reflector design as the lower 10–20 closest to the LED is Orange Peel then it moves into a smooth texture I am not sure but this maybe why it seem’s in the beam profile the brakes were put on the flood keeping it in more to make what flood is there brighter and the hotspot very bright.

I keep comparing to the trustfire X8’s beam pattern as this is a light I own and the beam pattern remind’s me of it the most with the exception of the hotspot being much larger on this new light, the Trustfire X8 has an STL-V6 driver in it and this Utilitech actualy is a little brighter and throw’s farther.

I only had the chance to use the light for a little less then an hour but it sure is a pleasure to use for it’s comfort, size and very usable beam the lumen’s are rated at 500 but this light to me seem’s to surpass this number.

A light I think some of you might be wondering how this compares to is the Home Depot XM-L2 light’s and this little guy (little compared to the 3D Defiant’s…lol) compares very well and actualy has a similar brightness but actualy I would rather use the Utilitech for basic around the yard and stuff then the defiant’s but if I had to have a light to throw the beam realy far I’d reach for the defiant….the defiant XML’s from the last 3 year’s IMO throw very well for a store bought light but so much of the intensity is in the corona of the beam helping it throw farther but the wider hotspot of the Utilitech just comes more handy IMO for basic function’s.

For this sale price it’s a no brainer if you have the fund’s I’d pick one or more up if for anything to have a C battery flashlight on hand as that’s the only battery on the shelf when a catastrophy hit’s and also because it’s just a nice light to have around and just the right size for a lot of different reason’s…I’d even buy one at full price but at half price at just a little over $15 it’s a steal.

Hope this is somewhat helpful. XM-L2 500 lumen model—> http://www.lowes.com/pd_569183-50584-LWFL1405_0?productId=50256751&Ntt…
