Home Depot Deal Alerts & Discussion Thread

I am noticing this to.

I personaly like this shift from seeing these led’s in just Chinese light’s and expensive USA light’s into affordable USA light’s that more folk’s can afford and experience. Exciting stuff.

Still like my modded Chinese light’s of course.

That’s a great deal you got there. I just checked online at all the stores around here and by gauging in store stock it seems that this light is a new offering, not just old stock that has laying around awhile. To get that light with that heavy discount this early in it’s run is very good.
That is one of the “Holiday” lights, this one

As far as newer emitters go, pretty much any light that would have used an XP-G is now using an XP-G2 and XM-L’s have gone over to the XM-L2

FWIW I was just in an Auto Zone earlier today and I was surprised to see that their ~$20 3xAA lights were using XP-E/XP-G (I ignored die size. The dome on the one I looked closely at had a huge scuff across it that distracted me!). It could have been old stock, who knows. This was in the checkout area, so I assume that they do turn these over relatively quickly.

Yeah, I see that kind of stuff too. I think that must be old stock. I actually was thinking of the new lights in Home Depot and Lowes.
Earlier this year someone here posted about a 3-C light at Autozone that was reduced to $10. I went out and got it. It is actually a pretty good light with an XP-G.

Notice the date, 03/18/14. Clearance price ends in 3 and the date is old enough to have gone to a penny.

I learned a new piece of information this week. A waitress at a restaurant we go to each Saturday is also a cashier at Home Depot. I told her about the penny deals I come across and she said she knew about them. HD’s policy is to ring them up and then the cashier is supposed to call the department head to let them know what happened so they can remove any remaining stock.

The pictured light above did ring up for a penny, there were three, and the self checkout helper noticed that they did. She came over to me and asked if there were more. Occasionally this question was asked of me before and I always thought it was because they wanted to get one for themselves. Turns out, that was so they could alert the department head.

Earlier in the week I came across these wire nuts that rang up for a penny. Had a date of 1/14/14, I don’t know how they lasted so long.

This is not a deal price wise, but it is good to know. Super strong Neodymium disc magnets in a HD, 3.98 per pack.

Can they explain why they would rather throw them away then sell them?

Well, I would assume that if they sell you something for a penny they could be satisfying a potential customers need for that item. They would then miss out on the opportunity to make a sale of a similar item at full markup.
By selling for a penny, they damage themselves, it’s better for them to throw it out. :frowning:

they could just reduce to a clearance price, price the item to be thrown away at the profit margin on the other item

On the other hand, I was talking to a Lowes manager the other day and he said they would rather get anything no matter how little rather than to throw it out. A couple of months ago I bought an entire clearance rack for 1 penny an item. They opened a separate register just to check me out. It took over a half hour to do that and the final bill was around $10. There were around 1000 items, mostly small bits of hardware. Here is a pick of one of the items. It is a box of EMT compression fittings, used to join 2 lengths of electrical EMT tubing. Normal price is around 86 cents each when purchased by the box of 50. That would be around $43.00 for the box. In the past they were clearance priced at a penny each, or 50 cents for the whole box. Didn’t sell???
I got them for 20 cents. Like he said, he would rather get something, anything, rather than nothing.

That lowes manager is smart, he has a keen business sense!
if i were getting these deals i would start an ebay store selling them

Ebay store dchomak! Tongue Out

Ebay store dchomer

I have never sold deals I get at a profit. That would take the FUN out of it. How many people make the mistake of turning their hobby into a business. They end up with no hobby and probably don’t make money at it anyway.

BTW, I collect tools as though it were a stamp collection. Hardware, screws, nuts etc I like to have on hand.
I will buy any stainless steel hardware when it is on clearance, I love SS screws and nuts!

Bort is practical to a fault so he must ask, what do you do with all those 1 cent items?

You'll find out on the next episode of "Hoarders" :) .

I try to organize it and put it aside for when I may use it. I gave half of the box of EMT parts to an electrician friend, along with a couple of these:

These were $15.97 and I got them for 5 cents each on clearance. ImA4Wheelr would get a kick out of that because in one of his threads I posted these pics as a suggestion for an easy way to make a large zooming aspheric flashlight. Months later, there they were and I scooped them up.
It is a 2” expansion fitting for electrical work. The lube on the sleeve and the o-rings allows the length to be adjustable.

Yeah, but I got good shhhh

Next week I will be taking a trip to Ohio. It’s about a 10 hour trip with normal stops. This time I plan on stopping at 8 HD’s along the way. My GPS can be set to find POI’s “along the way” that are no more than 1/2 mile off route. Very handy for finding a Dunkin Donuts or whatever kind of stop you like. We shall see if I can apply my theories on this trip.
Meanwhile, just today I found 2 more LED bulbs for a penny. These are old stock from a month ago’s clearance and when I saw them I recognized them as the “penny” lights. These came from my hometown HD, 3 miles from my house.
The self service checkout at HD and the receipt dated today, 11/30/2014

I have so many of these now I have decided to have a give away on some of these. Look for a separate thread on this coming shortly.

Yesterday my wife asked me to find one of the LARGE 59 inch Teddy Bears that HD had on BF. All the stores around here were out but I found that there were still some 22 miles away at a HD near the Massachusetts State line. It’s a long drive, but who cares, there’s a Costco up there too.

So I bought one, brought it out to my van and went back in to see if I could make the long trip really worthwhile. Only thing I could find is this display for an electrical outlet with an integral USB charging port.

Price ends with a “6”, now to check the date. Is it more that 6 months plus 6 weeks old?

3/18/14, that is old enough! This could ring up for a penny.
And it did, got 4 of them. Actually 5, the last one was stuck in the cardboard and I made another trip into the store to get it.

Here is the tear down of that unit.

Copper heatsinks.

It’s even iPhone and iPad compatible. Here it is pumping 1.69A into an iPad and 1.26A to the iPhone.
The package claims 3A, so that must be the limit to the 2 USB charging ports.
I will use one of these in the kitchen, the others? Maybe I will give them away.

Very impressive, i would enjoy having those outlets!
I wonder what that GPS within a 1/2 mile thing is called, if it has an official name, i would want it in my next GPS

it is a feature in iGo8. That is the GPS program that is shipped with most generic Chinese GPS units. It is also probably the most feature rich of any of the programs out there.
