Nice review on the light, Krono. A shame for the poor internal design otherwise this might have made an awesome budget version of the Hammer light (a light I've wanted for a long time).

Actually, the lack of a shelf and the charging port can be looked at as a positive. This light would be much more expensive if they had got those 2 things right.

Mine will be getting copper disk inserted and the charging port will be either threaded into a tripod mount or become a beacon/indicator light. Replace the spring with a short copper dome and you got lockout capability.

I haven’t read the review yet, but that is a beautiful house.

CK how will improve the thermal management since there is only a small shelf on the head, possible potting behind the star?

I used my usual method- first I shaved a stack of 1” copper disks down to fit flush in the head (reduced them about 1-2mm, they almost fit as it) then I soldered them into a slug then I JBweld potted underneath that to hold it as the correct height.

Did you take any pics during the process? I didn’t see a thread on it.

When I first saw this light and how cheap it was I wanted to start modding it. I haven’t modded a light yet, and after some research it seems like it may not be that beginner friendly. I was originally thinking of making it into a Mule.

Definitely a “budget” light, and kronological’s review is spot on…not a “bad” light but not the greatest either, but as C_K above…I think I might do the quad mod, problem is there ain’t alot of meat at all in this light, barely any fins and nowhere the heat can go…so driving it hard for long periods is out of the question…I am thinking 4A~ total (1A each emitter) w/ turbo stepdown after say 60 seconds might prevent it from burning up.

Either way not a bad light for the price, sub $10 light with plenty of “potential”

Heck I think this thing with a XM-L/L2 or now a XP-L on 20mm Copper sinkpad/noctigon would definitely perk this thing up even with the stock driver, much more light but not that much extra heat.

Yup, just measured, 24.25~mm diameter, depth from top of head is 25mm to star

Gonna get me a triple from RMM, it’s cheaper than the quad and I don’t think this guy will handle the heat as well as some larger rigs, not sure if I want to tackle a custom driver w/ MOSFET for better modes and higher power though

Driver does look moddable w/ either bridging the resistors or soldering lower values in though…probably bridging them will give the best performance

Thanks for posting pics. You really had to put the hurting on that driver. $12 is impressively low. Did you use this technique for the stars? Hill - Quad Nichia 119 (2 x 18650 host)

@Wight: I used one of my remaining quad MCPCB’s so that was easy, I used the kapton isolator method to use the 2-pad 119’s on the XP quad MCPCB. They seem to handle DD very well being on DTP, I built this light (using the widest available TIR) for low power / long runtime as a photography light. I get >60 minutes runtime on a 3400 NCRB at max (and obviously much more at lower power). It runs just about 3.5A (when the battery is full, dropping lower after the battery is partially depleted thus extending runtime even more). Note it will pull about 4.8-4.9A on a 25R but there is literally only a few lumen increase (and it could of even been measuring differences it was only about 20Lm more than on the NCRB) so it’s definitely not worth the lower capacity battery or shorter runtime or the increased heat. I’m getting 530Lm OTF after 30 sec (F1 style) and there is very little sag from turn on up till that 30sec mark (i.e. the DPT board is really helping the little N.119’s). This is far and above what I’ve ran them at in the past. Low is also amazing, well under 0.5Lm! I’m not able to measure it but it looks the same as moon2B (the 2nd selectable level of low2) on my ZL H52w!!

The light from it is absolutely beautiful! It turned out exactly how I had hopped. The thermal path is surprisingly good, the thing heat’s up instantly! This is the first time I’ve actually pressed the copper disks in, usually I size them perfect so they push in with finger pressure and then pot them in place but this time I made them over sized so I had to literally press them with my press, no potting needed. I also used a new (to me) type of thermal grease from fasttech- HD-GD660 “gold”, it seems to be more what I’m accustom to [i.e. better quality] than the same brand white crap I had been using on budget builds.

My ONLY complaint is the natural variation in the N119’s, notice the one on the top right (above pic) is just slightly cooler, I wish they all matched.

Thanks for the info Cereal_killer. I think I am misunderstanding you though. Are you completely isolating each 119 from the DTP thermal pad or not?
