Making a light for the XHP 70 and the 95mm faceted reflector LUM 5-90. 103500 lux @ 1 meter. Beam Shots are up.

There was a few posts on this somewhere. I don't think it was successful.

James3 did succeed with a XHP dedome  with the XHP50 at least, first a quick slice to take of most of the dome then a quick dunk in gas.

check out his thread about it

Beam shots are in the OP now.

No, I have not. I go as far as slicing the domes on any leds, but I do not de-dome with gasoline. I have been 100% unsuccessful in that and have never liked the results.

Old Lumens, do you have 1-2 of those reflectors you’d like to get rid of? I’d like to do a couple of maglite builds but not sure I need 5. If not I’ll just order the 5 and figure out something to do with them.

At the moment, I don’t know. If people want one made, I won’t have any left. I also want to make one for myself, for work, so right now I would have to say I will not have any left.

Very nice outcome. This is really a ‘go big or go home’ light.

I’m tempted to do something like this if my $11.99 SRK ever turns up from that ebay deal….

How long is that distance to the far wall again?

Nicely done Justin, thinking outside the box again….Love it!

I didn’t file the reflector to clear the screws in my Olight, merely removed the screws and put the reflector on, then put the screws back in.

The XHP-70 works beautifully in this reflector, I too think it’s just about a perfect beam profile.

Thanks for sharing the build, lot of work there….

WOWY!

There are folks that mod lights... then there are magicians! SO... the way I calculate it is...

1 Fantastic Mod Guy + 1 Super Duper Magician = OLD LUMENS!!!

What creative and perfect work!!!! What a beam!!! Simply Stunning Justin!!!

Dan.

How much will it cost? ;)

271 yards

78 yards

and 30 yards

To buy the stuff and make one, if you have a drill press or can use someone's:

SRK - price varies, but say $30

Aluminum - varies, but from speedymetals, about $10 plus shipping and they ship UPS, so about $12 there - $22

XHP 70 about $15 - $18 from China or more from Mouser because of shipping.

mcpcb about $7

Misc- wire, solder, metal discs, etc, etc, etc. $5

Reflector - they only ship 5, so that's the hard part. About $45 for five.

So, it ain't cheap, but modding never is. If you can get just one reflector, then about $85-$95.

If I make one - $150 plus shipping.

Thanks everyone for viewing the mod and for the kind words.

I have been thinking of trying one with several short pieces of aluminum tube, telescoped, so the head looks more like a normal light, kinda, sorta. Don't know if I would do that though, as it would only add to the labor and the overall cost.

Well put Dan. While we're at it a real motivator as well.

It’s always a pleasure to watch what O-L is going to come with.

Nice Job !

Great Beam Shoots…

Hi OL,

When you use this reflector with an XHP70 do you just sit the reflector flat down on the same level as the MCPCB, or did you have to tweak the focus? In the picture it looks like maybe it sits where the top of the MCPCB is.

Hi VOB. I'm interested to hear what O-L's answer is. I once tried this reflector with an MT-G2 (both domed and dedomed). I recall getting the best focus with reflector resting on the top of the MCPCB. It just cleared Lead solder pads if I recall correctly. I clearly remember it being much better beam with the dome intact. Something very special about the reflector. I think it really reflected color balance well and made tint seem even better.

I did not tweak it. I set the reflector flush onto the heat sink, so it is surrounding the mcpcb. What I found is that with the faceted reflector, placement really didn’t do anything for the beam. I did not try a dedome. I am not a fan of dedome in a faceted reflector, or even an OP reflector.
