Review: D.Q.G Tiny AA 1xAA/14500 XP-G2 R5 Stainless Steel EDC Flashlight

I love mine (incredibly compact). Obviously, I will only use with NiMH (Nitecore NL147 and Olight 14500, not fits ok) :

Trevi_lux, very nice collection! I plan to run only Imedion AA and maybe a L91 at times. Judging from your collection, the fact that you like it is high praise indeed  . I really like SS lights. Looking forward to this lights arrival.

Body of DQG same width than EagTac d25a Ti (2013). Head is 1mm fatter.

Did you notice PWM? Thanks

No noticeable PWM in all three modes.

CW is 1A and NW is 4A tint bin. For some odd reason BG has listed those as current.

Great review. great flashlight  Any info on runtimes?

Please bare with me, review writing is rather time consuming task. I will try my best to wrap up this review by this weekend.

I am measuring now. I will post the graph in next 48hrs.

That is a sweet looking litle light. I’m looking forward to the conclusion. Did you say how much the light is with the discount code? Maybe I missed it. Love the looks and the size. I also like that it always starts in low. That is definitely my preference for daily use. I like my Convoy S3 but it’s a little too big for EDC pocket carry IMO so my little i3s EOS remains my pocket light for now. Maybe this one could make the rotation. Thanks.

Wonderful minimalistic carry. I ordered a few more as gifts. I know a few trades people who will really appreciate this design. Taobao has the 90-CRI version in Ti and SS.

I just for mine. I’d call it pretty good but not awesome. The clip is flimsy and weak. The UI is weird. Resets to low after 50! Seconds. It stays on low unless you turn off and on quickly but then keeps advancing from medium to high to low otherwise. Weird.

Mine has not shown any of those issues. I cleaned all threads and applied Krytox 50/50 on the threads. Cleaned all PCB contact areas with Caig DeOxit. The PCB’s where pretty gunked up. I did not try any operations until after cleaning. The UI is standard L-M-H twist to change on my example. No problems, no mode skipping, flickering, preflash, etc… Smooth as silk twisting and easy, dependable mode changes.

I have no issues with mode skipping. Action is smooth (after lube). My issue is with the weird reset time, and memory/no memory behaviour. I have no flicker or preflash. These aren’t defects. Just weird UI. And crappy clip.

What battery are you using?

Eneloop

Tell me your reset time to low if it’s on medium. How long do you have to wait to get back to low. If I wait less than 50 seconds it goes to high.

My apology for missing this crucial detail. This only happens on medium mode, and my reset to low time is ~35s.

I just measured. Mine is 50 seconds. Way too long. Low is different. It acts like off time memory and doesn’t switch to medium unless you switch off and on quickly. I don’t mind it too much but it’s a bit inconsistent.

Here’s my super fast capsule review:

Overall: A good, not great light, that works for me but is lacking in a few areas. Great value, not likely to be mod friendly.

The Bad:

- The clip is flimsy, weak, and shifts easily. It doesn’t seem to pop off the light though (a good thing).

- The UI is a mixed bag. It requires a deliberate effort to get out of low (off time of less than 0.5 secs) but then continues to cycle through all modes until it is off for 50 seconds or more. It’s strange and makes no sense. It works for me because I use low mostly, but will not work for everyone.

- The cutouts for the keyring are sharp. They needed some finish work with a file to smooth them out.

- The light is not mod friendly. It looks like a glued two piece head. The circuit and LED board are likely combined too, to reduce size.

  • It looks like a bare optic, which can scratch easily.

The Good:

- A great, small size! It’s my smallest AA light by far!

- The knurling is very grippy, one handed use is easy with this knurling.

- Threads are fine (some cross threading is possible) but smooth. Tons of threads too, so you will not likley lose the head.

- The magnet implementation is very clever and allows one to remove it if needed easily. The Magnet is also strong enough to hold the light horizontally.

- The LED (mine is neutral 4250K XPG2) is very pleasant. I wouldn’t mod it to change tint.

- The optic gives a nice beam, with a good, wide hotspot.

- The glow behind the optic is a nice touch.

  • The tail cavity can be used to mount a trit.

So, on the whole, I do like it. Tiny size (truly Tiny AA) and good tint, beam, feel, with fair UI. That and it’s cheap (was <$24 with coupon). Too bad the interface is odd.
