My buddy came and picked up the light and is returning both of them and is going to see about getting a refund he doesn’t want to deal with them if they are already causing problems ,so does anybody want to buy never cycled AWT 26650 75 amp high drain batteries cheap or trade for thrower?

Well friend payed for both so he picked them up and is asking for Ric to refund him at last word

If jumping from the negative terminal of the battery to battery tube with a small screwdriver doesn’t do anything to rule out trouble with tail cap, maybe a wire came loose during shipping due to a bad solder joint? I’d check to make sure driver ring was tight and grounding the driver properly first and then tear it down and check every solder joint for the wires coming from driver to MCPCBs. If I’m correct, the driver is a 18 volt buck/boost with the LEDs wired in series.

If the soldering job wasn’t up to snuff, all the banging the light received during shipping knocked something loose or it’s just a cold solder joint. It has to be something real stupid. I wouldn’t ship it back just yet. Try trouble shooting it first.

Try putting magnets between the batteries in case buttons aren’t protruding enough. Trying different batteries wouldn’t hurt either. Shove 3 of those plastic 18650 to 26650 tubes in there and drop some 18650’s in there for giggles.

A few things. First, this light is not and will never be a thrower.
I bought the ShengJie with XM-L2 emitters and converted it to triple XHP-70 before Ric got these done. Mine does over 11000 out the front lumens. ( actually am doing this for a friend, so it’s not mine )

Second, those cells wont’ run it. Try Efest Purples or King Kongs. Even good 18650’s like the Efest 35A, LG HE 2 or HE 4, Sam 25R, any of those will do it.

When it come’s to cells, cheaping out is likely to get you no result at best, and a very dangerous result at worst.

FWIW, I paid $75 for the light originally, am selling it to my buddy for $120 making 11,000 lumens. This is measured lumens, not Chinese.

That link to EDC is a great price! That’s almost cost, certainly for us it’s cost, I mean, I bought the light for $75 and then emitters for $18 ea. and built the driver and it’s $120 cost for me to build one like this. They even have a reasonable lumens quoted! Pretty accurate, surprising!

I have to agree with what’s been said, something must have come loose in shipping. There’s going to be a simple explanation that those 2 lights don’t work, seriously. I’d start with checking a better set of cells, or maybe a power supply. Then I’d go ahead and open it up and check connections.

The light is well made, once I had it in hand I didn’t want to sell it to my friend. Even the stock XM-L2 light is nice, with a suprisingly tight hot spot. Really, I wanted to keep this one and will probably buy another to keep as a long life emergency flashlight.

What driver did you use Dale?

LOL, I used a 17mm FET driver with a Zener mod, and made a dummy cell to fill in the 3rd placement, closest to the tail cap. The light works with 3 cells, but I believe it’s stressing the emitters and won’t do it myself. (My BTU Shocker did a little over 20,000 lumens with all 3 cells in series, but vaporized the copper traces almost to the point of annihilation and I had to rebuilt the carrier because of this) I don’t recommend running one this hard. Somethings going to give and monies will be wasted.

Between my friend and I that’s 2 and then Vnre and I used. Multimeter.on diode mode and all was good from tail switch to emitter I tried Samsung 25rs with a homemade sleeve ,and you can’t get to the emitters without damaging something. So that is why my friend who bought them is returning for money and my responsibility was to buy the batteries which h were the AWT 75 A s brand new 6 each

Did you look up the review from HKJ on those cells? They’re most likely your problem…

This is AWT’s 3800mA 26650, not the 4500 like you used. Everywhere I saw yours was showing $10 ea or higher. Maybe you got scammed? At any rate, this lower capacity cell shown in the test sucks at higher amperage and the lights creds show 3*6A, that’s 18A in my book.

These aren’t efest they are the AWT s and he did a test on the AWT 18650 high drains over 35 Amps I wish I could find it but I can’t any how the lights are GONE my friend is returning

Dude, the red lines are Efest Purple 3500mAh cells, the blue lines down at the bottom are AWT 3800mAh cells. Essentially, the blue lines show the cells dropping below the emitters Vf requirement almost immediately. Won’t run the XHP-70. I have no idea what the driver is doing in that light, if it’d help a lesser cell work or if it’d shut down due to “low voltage protection” under load.

Also, the cells you listed are not 18650’s. They would have much different behavior patterns, as all brands show with different cell sizes.

Tell where this going to turn into an argument anyhow I tried 3 Samsung 25 rs in series with a pvc sleeve nothing and then I. Checked 3 AWT 266t0 in series 12.67-12.7 volts and what I was trying to sy HKJ did a test on 186t0 high drains and it tested well so WY wouldn’t the 266t0s if can send HKJ a battery let hkj Test it if he wants I will because Iam curious to see how they do and the bottom lin e the lights are gone I don’t have them my friend took them back and returning them and also Vnre s light didn’t work either so all 3 lights failed?

Didn’t read the whole thread but I have one of these except with XM-L2. Protected batteries were too long and were shorting out on the driver. Had to use unprotected batteries and use a spacer(a few coins). Unprotected were too short without the spacer and protected were too tong.

No argument, just trying to make sense of it all. I know that you can’t look at the test results from one cell and expect the same from another from that manufacturer. It might do as well, it might not. Typically the bigger cells can’t do as well in total output, although they do have more capacity. The Efest cell is the exception.

At any rate, I still agree that it was probably something relatively simple to fix the issue. Shame y’all sent em back so quick. Oh well. Happens that way sometimes.

I got started modding with an HD2010 that didn’t work out of the box. Every fix I did the dang light managed to come up with another reason to quit working! So I kept fixing and kept fixing til it was finally satisfactory. That taught me a lot, took some time but gave me confidence. :slight_smile: Then Old Lumens did the challenge and I found that one can do almost anything if willing and patient. I’m still not an electronics guru, so the drivers stump me sometimes. I just yank em and stuff an 17mm FET in and carry on. :wink: (of course it’s usually not that simple, but that’s the fun, the challenge!)

The standard ShengJie XM-L2 would be a good one for those cells of yours. The light is about $75 and is very nice, it’d be a great long run time light for emergency type use and a club for those iffy situations.
