Old S2 and S7 both have the deeper reflector. Not sure which others do.

S2, S5, S6, and S7 all use the same (longer) OP reflector (Smooth sold separately)

S2+ and S3 use the smaller reflector

I think S4 uses a different size

S3 has an integrated shelf (no pill)

I believe I got mine at fasttech.

Smo reflector + dedomed XP-L throws pretty good, and it’s not a ringy beam either. I have it in an S6 and it’s in my top 3 favorite lights

Thanks for that illuminating visual comparison!

It looks like nearly everything changed except perhaps the reflector. Even the shape of the host and the way it was knurled and anodized changed.

+1. Thanks for the very detailed screenshots. It cannot be clearer than this! I can thus confirm I got the REAL ONE! YAHOO. Date is 18/05/15.
Paid like $11 for mine. Cannot be happier. My new EDU (every day use) bedside lamp! (50 lumens)

Yep I agree it’s amazing thrower for such a little light. I have the HI-XPL 5000k in the Cypreus 18650, LD-2 driver with the longer smooth reflector, it’s about as perfect as you can get! Perfect spot, plenty of spill and beautiful tint! Not so good in the S2+ should of just left it alone! But I plan on getting a few of the S2’s and doing them for friends since I believe the Cypreus was based on it?

The S4 I got way back is a deep reflector, might be deeper than the all the others in fact.

I <3 my S7. Since it’s stainless steel, it’s my “beater” light. It takes a lot of abuse and stays pretty. I built it with a 5×7135 nanjg driver, Nichia 219B on a Noctigon, SF L2 clip, DC-Fix on the lens to make the beam floodier/smoother, and custom firmware.

The max output is only about 500 lumens, but that’s fine for my uses and I wouldn’t want to go higher with a steel host anyway. It’s already pushing its limits for heat dissipation, and it’s a little beyond the maximum recommended current for its emitter.

I definitely can see the difference between S2 and S2+ light patterns, my S2 is a much more throwy combo of flood and throw in comparison and I enjoy that beam pattern more.

B42,

You’ve actually answered part of my question that I had in the A6 thread! – Thanks!

Now, do you know how that compares to the EE A6?

Could you please post you answer in Bugsy’s A6 thread, please.

Thank you,
-Chuck

Well, I got my fake Convoys with crappy springs, scratched reflector, not 4C tint, very off center LED, not 2.8A driver, and they smell like they were somehow molded in a dungeon before sending… Also, they dont withstand a short washing in running water without submersion even while tightened up without taking water in at the lens at least. And water resistance is pretty necessary when the light smells like it does.

My real Convoy C8 with a Panasonic NCRB is in comparison brighter even though its a warmer 4C tint, and lights up the room better even with a Samsung 25R in the Red phoney S2+

Hey Chuck, I dont know about the A6 in comparison, sorry, you’ll have to ask someone else who has one.

Kudos to gearbest for solving my fake s2+ issue with ease, I don’t usually expect much from the CS of these Chinese stores but this time they worked things out really quick. Party

For those who said “never buying from GB again” I suggest you to contact them first. Perhaps is not entirely their fault on sending out the fake convoys.

Will,

May I ask how they solved it? – Are they sending you a Real one, or did they credit your PayPal?

I currently have three outstanding orders with them, though none of them are late.

Thanks,
-Chuck

Good to hear that Will, I have patience and did write them, awaiting response, I wanted to report here what I received.

Gina just PM’d me this after I sent a picture of the packaging/light. The previous message asked if I wanted a refund to my GB wallet or a resend. I’m hoping I get the correct light shipped out to me, for free.

Thank you for your kind patience.

Once the item in stock, we would arrange the shipment for you soon.

Please feel free to contact us if there are any problem.

They offered a replacement with shipping costs included, but after the disappointment of this S2+ I went for the refund instead. My initial triple nichia project found a new host, this time it will be Quad Nichia 219C P60 dropin (modified brass sportac triple). Still waiting for the 219C to be widely available, and I’ll be using my last quad-XP DTP copper mcpcb.

I’ve just checked the new arrivals at DX and look what I’ve found: “Ultrafire 8-Mode XM-L2 U2 2.8A 800lm 1-LED Memory Flashlight Torch – Red (1 × 18650)”
http://www.dx.com/p/ultrafire-8-mode-xm-l2-u2-2-8a-800lm-1-led-memory-fl...
and in black
http://www.dx.com/de/p/ultrafire-xml-l2-u2-2-8a-1-led-cool-white-800lm-7...
Only the red one has the metal switch button… (Aluminium, not SS)
It looks very much like the Convoy clone some have got from GB!

Yep!

Same piss-ant spring on the driver… Looks like the Fake Convoy to me…

Good Find!

DX will never get any of my money, but not just because of this.

Thanks,
-Chuck

It is exactly the same light I got from Gearbest but says UltraFire instead of Convoy. It has the same cheap driver spring, aluminum pill and rings. It doesn’t show the tail cap threads but I bet it’s just as crappy.

The DX one isn't as big an issue because it's 'UltraFire' branded, not Convoy. Everyone should suspect an UltraFire branded light because most are a dummy brand label, not to say all those are bad. At least now we know what's goin on, DX labels the tailswitch as aluminum too, so we know what it is and can avoid it, specially at that price.

I thought I was making some progress with GEARBEST through PayPal. I agreed to pay 2usd to cover the tracking fee for the resend of a REAL S2+. Well, I sent the $2 and now they want me to CLOSE my PayPal case before they send the tracking number and flashlight! I feel like a SUCKER for believing anything they say!

Yeah and I found the copy S2s are even worse than I thought: they have some burring of the aluminum on the inside of the tube on one, it will wear through the battery cover during usage…one has no o-ring under the lens and the third has a dent/tear in the inner portion of the reflector near the LED with a burr of metal sticking out…havent taken it apart to find out what is going on there…

Hah, have you seen the infamous Sipik SK-68? What about the Skyray King? How many different C8s are there, anyway?

We’re dealing with a veritable clone army. Sometimes the clones are even better than the original! But … well, most of the time it’s just a cheap imitation.
