Nitecore EA81 8xAA flashlight

So I was browsing and I came across this flashlight from Nitecore, takes 8xAA, classic Nitecore UI and 2150 lumens. Looks like a capable all around house/vehicle light.

Successor for the EA8

8xAA batteries is too much for me :stuck_out_tongue:

i think thats a great way for people who want power without need for LiIoncells…

Absolutely. I have been in this boat for 4 years until I switched to Li-ion this year!

The problem is who wants to have to recharge 8 x AA?! :Sp 4 slot chargers seem most common. It would be fine if it also had other battery options, like an 18650.

I'm not sure whether to be amused or disturbed that the ad shows it being loaded with Alkaleaks.

I wonder if they've upgraded the heatsinking in this model?

Over 2000 lumens for a non-flashoholic is pretty big. Even if it’s on alkaleaks. I modded my EA41 and on that one the heatsinking was an afterthought.

There is a tear-down thread in BLF that caused a bit of controversy. It certainly seemed that the build on the EA8 and EA4 ran counter to the accepted principles of good heatsinking. I think there was speculation that these lights were aimed squarely at Joe Public who might have become alarmed if his flashlight got hot to the touch.

It will be interesting to see who is the first to strip one of these down.

It was also found that those lights got away with that bad sinking (no dramatic heat sag, good output), so how bad is bad??

Yep, hence the controversy.

WOW!

i hope i get one to take it apart…

I want one.

I like the potential, AA’s Eneloops for me. I also like that they kept the head smaller at 60mm’s. At 10 ounces it does look like very little heat sinking though.

I like it; looks neat.

I like this, but just bought a Sunwayman D80a, admittedly for a bargain price. 8 AA cells is not an issue, it takes seconds to remove them, and stick ’em on chargers, and then refill the light afterwards. The absence of a battery holder is good. I guess this will be ~£120 in Blighty.

Hmmm I like that!
I have been an 8xAA user for some time too, then went to prefer 4xAA lights for the ease of charging in one round, but I have an idea: without resorting to an 8 cell charger (expensive and bulky) would it be possibile to make 2xAA in-parallel adapters to stuff 2 cella in each channel of a smart charger such as an i4 or similar?

I suspect that is how some chargers work, when they charge batteries in pairs. The disadvantage is that the charging is not optimal for each cell, especially if they are at very different charge levels when inserted. You can buy a decent 4 cell independent charger quite cheaply, in the UK 7DayShop do them.

In all seriousness, wouldn't it just be simpler and cheaper to buy another 8-pack of eneloops? Then you don't need to be in a hurry to charge them all at once.

You can never have too many eneloops!
