I’d buy a double tube option if it was on the market.
Knowing that my King Kong 26700 5000mAh cell is most likely my strongest and certainly highest capacity, I set out to make it work in the L2 this morning. First of all, the forward clicky had to go. The actual pcb the switch is on has a white outline of a smaller Omten style switch, so I removed the clunky forward switch and put a small Omten in it’s place. Then I took the switch assembly/tail cap out to the lathe. The spacer for the switch that allows the rubber boot to interface appears to be black Delrin, so I machined that down to a wider cup to fit completely over the smaller switch, then machined off the raised top portion that fits into the boot. That allowed the switch/spacer/boot to work together at a smaller overall height. Then I machined the inside of the tail cap to allow the longer 26700 room to fit, leaving a ledge wide enough for the battery tube to still make solid ground contact and fit the same as usual.
So now I have a reverse clicky with a through pcb spring bypass that allows the King Kong 26700 to produce 6A at the tail and the light makes 1566 lumens from the XP-L HI. Poifect! :bigsmile:
As far as focus goes, I didn’t do anything different. The 20mm Noctigon is screwed to the emitter shelf, the white centering ring sits on top of the Noctigon and the reflector mates to it nicely. Beam profile is tight, I’ll get a new lux reading a bit later. Should be more than the 212Kcd previously. At any rate, I’m very pleased with it and happy to have the high capacity cell in place.

Anodizing is quite nice, typical of Convoy lights, and the raised blocks on the tube are great for grip… the knurling could have stood being deeper but it works anyway
THIS is how square threads should be! I like the raised rib being the same dimension as the channel, very solid. Notice the KK 26700 standing proud of the tube
A few things here. First, yes, I brain farted on the brass retaining ring and made it overly wide in the center. I cut the entire ring at 20.20mm and then enlarged the opening in the head of the light, re-cut threads to match how I had my lathe already set up instead of trying to match the existing threads. Goofed somewhere and the driver will fit through the “retaining ring” Duh! So I soldered the snot out of it. Ugly, but very functional. lol Second, the shelf surrounding the driver was anodized, as was the end of the battery tube. Huh? So I cut the ano off and cleaned it off the end of the tube with a file. I didn’t want ground to rely on the threads so now I have a solid ground through the host. Sometimes I also like to solder a copper disc on top of the spring so that there is a flat large surface area for a flat top cell to make contact with. I don’t know if it helps, but it looks neat. lol
Here you can see how much I had to relieve the inside of the tail cap for the KK 26700. Critical to this was the smaller Omten switch and a reduction in the depth of the spacer between the switch and boot.

I used to like the HD2010 for a thrower in the 26650 class, this L2 is like the evolution of that light. Much better looking, much more refined, with the same diameter but considerably deeper reflector. And it’s about time! lol (I’ve got the L2 sitting beside a grey 2010 that pulls 6.49A on it’s de-domed XM-L2) The beam profile is nicer in the L2, tighter hot spot from the HI, overall nicer light by a good margin.

I got it as host only, really like it. Such a nice chunky, well built light. However, the reflector has some imperfections, little dents, not too happy about that. Still not sure what I’m going to do with it, XP-L HI, XP-G2 or even XP-E2, someone figured out a way to dedome a 219C properly?
I think I’ll play around with it today. Let you know how it goes.

Mine came with a little damage but I’m not complaining.
I really like this light overall. I’m passing the info on to Simon about the little damage stuff though. Dale’s came without a switch retaining ring and yours a dented reflector? That is not cool. On happier note I can tell you with certainty that Simon will take care of it and replace any missing or damaged parts. He did confirm that the light absolutely does come with a switch retaining ring and he offered to ship one to replace it but Dale already made his own. Contact Simon and I’m sure he will replace the reflector. Mine is flawless and all should be.
Ooh and more exciting news! Simon is making a run of the double length X6 type tubes for us! I’ll let you know the details soon. They will be unbranded. :bigsmile:
