Convoy L2...Guess who's back???

Damn! I hate you!
Now I have to buy another L2………
Although, not sure about that. I absolutely want a dual cell tube but don’t really have a use for it at the moment 0:) .(the current driver wont work with 2 cells, right?)
I guess that’s part of being a flashaholic. 8)

Damn guys, help me out. What should I do with the L2 I already have and what should I do with that dual cell tube?…

I have a second host on the way.

The LD-2 from LED4Power can run the 2 cell configuration and at 6A or even more, so it’s a splendid candidate for a driver for the 2 cell L2 with an MT-G2 or XHP-70 in it. Oh boy, this is gonna be fun! An LD-2 driven L2 with MT-G2, 2 cell TOO sweet!

(perfect timing too, I only have 10 MT-G2 lights and it’s been a while since I’ve built one.)

Yeah, you’re right I should stop. It’s costing us too much money. I’ll tell Simon to cancel the tubes…

NOT!!! As my good friend Dale told me if you want the double length for looks and feel you can still run a single cell configuration with a dummy cell to bridge the gap. I may end up doing that. I’ll probably wait for the L6 for a 4 die emitter setup. I can’t get over the throw on the current L2 so I just want more power pushed through a XPL-HI emitter with the smooth reflector. My stock L2 hangs really well against almost all my modded lights. I think I’m in love.

@J-Dub74

Thanks man. I ordered the host from Simon, but that one is still on it’s way. The one I received is the one I ordered a few days later from Banggood. Contacted their CS about it, sent some pictures their way.

@PD68

In terms of build quality, it’s much better than the Yezl. Also in terms of heat transfer. The Yezl has it’s fins on the head, but the LED and the driver sit in the middle part. The Convoy is much heavier and feels much beefier. Yezl has side switch plus reverse tail clicky, Convoy has forward tail clicky, no e-switch, what I personally prefer in that kind of light (with the Yezl that e-switch doesn’t bother me, because I have a LD1 in there and don’t have to change grip to switch modes). Also the threads on my Yezl are really not that great, especially the none-anodized ones between battery tube and middle part, no comparison to the ones on the Convoy, which are very nice thick square-cut threads, that came lubed and feel great. The only threads I don’t really like on the Convoy are the driver retaining ring threads and the driver retaining ring itself. Threads on it are thin and the ring itself is also too thin for my taste, seems fragile to me. Had Convoy C8 driver retaining threads and ring ruined lately, also very thin ring with very little threading on it. The ring from the Convoy L2 at least is made out of brass and doesn’t appear to be that fragile.

As long as it works it’s not a real critique, it’s more of a suggestion for improvement.

Yeah, I think with the reflector I may had bad luck. I’d recommend buying this light, it’s great, and I’d recommend buying it from Simon.

I put a XP-L HI on sinkpad in there together with a FET-driver with guppydrv, that I had lying aroung, wanted to do it quick without any fine adjustments, and than see how the beam looks like and if I have to raise the emitter or so. So yeah, now there’s a XP-L HI in there, just used the spacer for XM-L2 that came along with it. Hotspot is very tight and there’s a corona that’s quite big, but not ugly, I like it.

Since my Yezl and L2 have the same XP-L HI, they should be quite comparable, although the Yezl has the 5A-LD1-driver whereas the L2 has a DD/FET-driver. I’m going to do some beamshots as soon as I can.

XP-L HI works really well in the L2

That’s it.
Going to put a XP-L HI and fet +1 driver in there.
I have some reverse clicky’s on order so when they arrive I try to put one in the L2.

Does anyone know of a driver that has a input voltage for 1 *and *2 cells and an amperage of around 4 - 5A? (for single 3v emitter use)
Really want to use this light as a thrower with 2 or 1 cell.

Surprisingly, my L2 host showed up today Smile, along with a Blue S2+ host and the blue and red shorty tubes Smile. Tracking # never worked. Wow, the L2 is a beauty. Also got in the supposed XP-L V6 0D LED's from FastTech.

I was curious about the reflector size (width) - it's 54 mm I.D. compared to 51.5 mm I.D. of an HD 2010, plus of course the obvious larger depth.

Thanks for all the pictures. My L2 host arrived and thought it would help to add some more pictures and possibly some info.

I marked the reflector to see if it contacted the head in an area besides the top rim where it rests. As you can see, only minor contact on the second “shelf” up.
Also the host came with the ring, spring, screws, and 18650 spacers in a bag.

Wow, this is a large tailcap.

A whole lot of bezel

I got another one coming destined for a double length tube.
Thanks for any help.

I want one… but it looks too short for what I want. I think pictures I saw elswhere looked bigger. I prefer something the size of maglight 3 D for stashing in the seat pouch of my truck So it’s easy to grab when I need. Anything smaller and I tend to lose it. lol

For accuracy, it wasn’t the switch retaining ring that was missing in my host kit, it was the driver retaining ring. The switch was installed in the tail cap on mine with only the 2 “flower” 18650 adapter’s being loose in the tube. The centering ring, spring, and 2 screws were in a small ziploc bag inside the tube.

See this shot from Inkidu? The black ano around the driver bay? Why did they kill electrical conductivity in this area? My battery tube had anodized threads on one end, bare threads on the other. But the bare threads had ano on the end of the tube where it would hit this ano around the driver… this would mean that only the threads would conduct the ground through the host. I fixed that on mine, but it’s definitely something that should be addressed in my opinion. Lockout can come from the switch/tail cap if that’s necessary, hence the anodized threads on that end of the tube.

I might have missed this piece of information, but is it possible to make new L2 that is in the making to be wide enough to take 3 or 4 AA batteries in carrier?

Doesn’t look like it veer, the walls would be too thin if it was bored out that much.

Hmm, well, then it would be cool if Simon could make separate battery tube, wider one to accomodate 4xAA setup :D!

That would be cool, he could make such tube either for the new L2, that hes supposedly working on or for this, current L2 as well!

I understand that youd need either wide head base where the threads go in to accept wider battery carrier or simply make some DIY spacer/spring setup to let the current flow from battery to driver?

I like this L2, but would like to see what comes in its next iteration.

Don’t think that Simon would make a separate tube for a 4xaa adapter, it would be too expensive for him.

Also don’t really see a use for a 3 or 4x aa setup?

Since you were talking about the “next iteration”, J-Dub74 is there already some more info on this? (or about the lovely L6?)

I see use - more battery choices for emergency :D!

Dont think it would expensive, unless requires redesigning, XinTD/Convoy X3 is just like that ;)!

Anyway, waiting for news regarding next iteration of L2 and reviews of stock versions of current L2’s!

Obviously he would have to design a new tube for that, so it would cost time/money, and I can’t see demand being that high. I wouldn’t want one.

Me either, I mod all my lights and AA’s couldn’t meet the power demand.

OK, was a quick idea after looking at X3 and L2 on GB and thinking that X3 isnt worth it when compared to L2.

For the record, I do have an X3 and overall I love it. That thick SS bezel really gets me going. I even optimized the driver to have two mode groups, one for 18650/26650 and one for AA’s. But I’ve found I never actually use AA’s in it, and having to use a spacer even for 26650 and dealing with that thick tube 24/7 can get annoying. If Simon wants to make a separate tube like the X3, fine. I would just be worried that the original design would be compromised to accommodate it.

Having trouble over here, please help me decide… I got a second L2 host and can’t figure out for the life of me what to put in it! I’ve got an HI in the first one, so that’s done… I’m looking at…

SBT-70 in blue for about 200 lumens at 428nm
CBT-140 in daylight white, 92 CRI at 5700K for around 2600 lumens
CBT-120 in blue for about 600 lumens at 420-450nm
CBT-120 in green for 2100-2300 lumens in the 540nm range
a triple 50mm with nichia 219C, or XP-G2 S2 OD, or XM-L V2 2B HI or XM-L V6 3D or…

the triple would require making a head filling heat sink, I’ve got a chunk of tellurium copper that I can do this with… it weighs 2.3 lbs and it won’t have a lot cut off it so the light would be really heavy. (I like that about copper but this might be excessive even for me!)

Or wait for the extension tube and go with MT-G2?

See? Want to do something nice, something different, but what? I’ve already got everything on hand to do the triple. The CBT emitters are $91-125 each, for the emitter only. Yeah. I know, right?

But the blue lights I’ve built have been really wicked cool and only very very low lumens, those bad boys make mega blue at like 18Amps! And the green is just stupendous!
