Warsun Zoomie X65. Bro of UF1405?

A 50 mm. lens arrived. This one I think: http://www.dx.com/p/50mm-optical-glass-lens-for-flashlight-spot-light-44653#.VdKJD5cy1uY, though the package didn’t say anything I understood. It has a somewhat shorter focal length and a slightly larger useful area, so I consider it a worth while improvement, depending on the use. The optical quality seems good as far as I have seen.

Is this a LatticeBright?

Not sure, it’s sure got bad enough tint and output. I’ll check.

I am trying to mount a 6 V buck driver from IOS on a copper disc for cooling and ground. So far I have learned that traces on boards aren’t strong enough to bend attached solid copper wire, and that you have to solder a wire to the heavy thing before you solder the other end to a lighter thing.
I may start a new thread on it when it starts to go better.

I have a Warsun X65 that was re-shipped soon after 12/17/2015. The Cree XM-L appears to be genuine, phosphor surrounds the bond wire pads on all sides. The original shipment on 10/15/2015, that was lost, may have had an XM-L2, as described, but these were apparently no longer available by the time of the second shipment. (So I paid for an XM-L2 and got an XM-L, but I got free tracking on the second shipment, and the loss doesn’t appear to be there fault.)

I intend to modify the Warsun X50 (same as X65) for my little son. He wants over 600 m throw to excel his buddies, which means about 100000 cd. Is this possible with dedomed XP-G2, stock driver and about 1500 mA out of 3xx eneloop pro? How much output may I expect with XP-L HI?

You should look to see if there is a resistor to bypass in the driver. Most budget flashlights have a small FET in series with a resistor (usually 2 to 4 resistors in parallel). With a Cree LED, one can safely short across the resistors. Sometimes there is an extra LED connection pad on the board to switch to. I did once find the little FET didn’t work right with that much current. Better would be to switch to a BLF driver from BangGood or from Mountain Electronics, but you would need an adapter plate to make it fit.

Thanks for the info. I have a couple of drivers here. The light shall be used with 3xAA NiMh, and it pulls already about 1.5 amps at tailcap. So I first try what I can achieve with a dedomed XP-G2 and only change or mod the driver if I won’t get the desired throw. I want to stay at the safe side since this light is used by a child.

Throw increased from about 35000 cd to 114000 cd = 675m with 3x AA at 1.5 amps. Only replaced LED with XP-G2 dedomed.
Son is happy …

Driver diameter? Available height for it? PWM?

Driver is somewhere between 27-28mm if I’m remembering correctly, and there is a good bit of height. I’ve seen members use drivers with fairly tall inductors on them.

In my Warsun x50 the diameter of the driver is 28 mm and you have round about 25 mm height on the backside.

I finally decited to mod my Warsun X50.

To get the pill out I had to hit it from the driver site with a hammer a few times to loosen it like Kloepper Knife Works suggested.

Spring bypass

Switched the positive wire from OUT+ to OUT1+ - like suggested by Fritz t. Cat - and cause I applied to much heat doing the spring bypass I had to resolder all components. The wires were changed to 22 AWG silicon wires later on.

For some additional thermal mass and a better heattransfer I added 20 mm aluminium

As LED I’m using an XM-L2 U2 dedomed with A1 tint I think on a 22mm MAXTOCH dtp mpcb. Because of the big diameter of the mpcb I just filled the cut out X section of the pill with Fujik instead of filling it up with aluminium. The contact area to the pill shouldn’t be the bottleneck for heattransfer.

To center the LED I wanted to use a 3d printed spacer that uses the MAXTOCH mpcb to center it but it turned out the LED isn’t in the center of the mpcb - 1 direction is 0.5 mm off center



I made a new spacer that actually uses the LED to center it.

I potted the driver with Fujik, put everything together and the result of the little mod is shown below.
3.6A from a Liitokala 5000mAh 26650. If I remember correct the current drawn on the tailcap on high was 1.8A stock. Just swapping the positive LED wire from OUT+ to OUT1+ the current drawn went up to 2.8A.

The comparsion pictures were taken with a NEX 5R and Tamron 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III VC. F/4, exposure 1/3 s, ISO1600 and focal lenght 24 mm. I will have to work on camera settings and might compare the X50 to a modded HD2010. My other stock lights with more cd than the EA45S are too floody I guess (Convoy L6 and Acebeam K40M).

If anyone still has a stock Warsun X65 or X50 laying around it’s just switching one wire from OUT+ to OUT1+ to bump up the output quite a bit and while you are at it you can add some thermal paste under the mpcb mine had none.

The problem with Warsun (I’m in the middle of a major mod) is in transferring heat to the body. Designed like this, Warsun transfers most of the heat to the battery tube. Only contact that battery tube is making with the body is on the bottom where it touches the body and that is only while zoomed out completely.
BTW, my Warsun came with hollow pill :person_facepalming: , MCPCB with LED was sitting on another blank MCPCB.

Yes, you are right, the warsun really has bad heat transfer. For me it’s no big problem as mine doesn’t run with almost 9A as yours does.

I had the chance to compare my X50 to a stock X65 that I gave to my dad some time ago with the battery carrier for 3 x AA. The biggest difference is probably that the X65 has a clip, a tripod mounting hole and uses a cree XM-L emitter instead of a XM-L2.

I have done lux measurments on some of my lights and I think my lux meter reads like 10 - 20% too low. Measuring distance was 6.40m with fresh charged batteries in all lights(26650: LiitoKala INR26650-50A, 18650: Sony VTC6 or LG HG2)
