Brinyte B158 mod thread

Wow 300kcd. Can’t wait for my b158 to arrive. I will also put in my xpg2 s4 2b but not dedomed yet, what kcd should i expect with domed s4 2b? Also about the tint of s4 2b when dedomed does it have greenish tint? Can you post you beamshot, djozz?

With dome I guess about 190 kcd? The tint is not bad at all, now you mention it, no annoyingly green tint, even not too yellow :-) . Here's your beamshot, from my balcony, the traffic sign in the middle of the little park is at 90 meter (100yrds), the brightness I have adjusted to about what I see in reality.

Very impressive. Still waiting on three empty pills from gearbest.

Finally placed a parts order to fill a couple of these empty pills I’ve got here. First is getting an XP-G2 S4 2B on noctigon, which will be de-domed. Next one gets an XP-L HI V2 3C on noctigon. Both will be driven by Mtn FET+1 drivers. That still leaves me two pills to fill with something else later. Pretty excited to see this light come to life with these stronger pills.

I just finished 3 different setups.

1. Another dedomed XP-G2 S4 2B with a MTN-DD driver. Jumpers on springs, fresh 30Q. 341kcd

2. Red XP-E2 on 16mm Noctigon, dome on, 6x7135 Q.lite driver, jumpers on springs, fresh 30Q. 90kcd

3. Dedomed XQE on 8x7135 Q.lite driver, jumpers on springs, fresh 30Q. 157kcd

I haven’t tried a dedomed XP-L or XML2 yet, but I’m sure it’s going to happen. Until then XP-G2 S4 2B for the win. Great neutral tint, even hotspot, really perfect pocket thrower.

Guys those are really impressive numbers... It seems that plastic acrylic lenses passes out more light than glass lenses of uniquefire flashlights.

So average 320kcd of B158 is about 25% better than average UF 1503(250 kcd) flashlight.

Crazy light indeed.

This should be school for other manufacturers to start producing more quality acrylic lenses.

Edit: I hope you guys did not give up in modding remote switches to give full power with fet drivers and white leds.

Djozz,

Could I kindly ask you something?

Could you please try B158 lenses in your Uniquefire 50mm aspheric(the one you saw up to shorten the tube, and then aa-d :) , in fact you made 1503 prototype ) ?

Maybe they are interchangeable?

I would try but I am still waiting B158.

Just want to say- awesome mods guys. My 5 pills are still in transit, so I can’t wait to start building a few different setup combos. Looking forward to a dedomed XP-G2 S4 2B… so now all I have to do is read up on the de-doming process. I’ve heard several different ways to do it, so I’ll have to find the one that works best with the tools I have.

How is the heatsinking with brinyte? I suspect it gets pretty hot with these numbers. Any room/ideas for improvement?

For this XP-G2 the heatsinking is excellent, it does not get hot at all, just nicely warm after some time. Improvement is even for XM-L2 not needed. Perhaps if you use a XHP70 and 2x18650 (with extender) heatsinking could become critical.

Here you see why they are not interchangable: left 1407/1503 lens, right B158 lens.

Did not measure focal distance exactly but for the 1503 lens it is roughly 20mm, for the B158 lens roughly 40mm. The 'used' diameter is as good as identical (both 47mm). Because of the longer focal length, the hotspot of the B158 is smaller:

1503 'prototype' left, B158 on the right. (not so good picture, I have not much time tonight to do it perfectly. the difference in brightness has no relevance for the point being made btw)

So it is not surprising hat the B158 throws further: better imaging for two reasons: in chinese flashlights plastic lenses used are usually better than glass lenses, and on top of that, longer focal length lenses image better than shorter focal length lenses (and have less light reflected on the lens surface because the light comes in at a smaller angle).

What you loose with a longer focal length is lumens when zoomed in because the hotspot is smaller, what you win is a wider flood modus.

Thanks Djozz,

Your pics are very cool.

That means that B158 has better throw and flood mode :)

And acrylic lenses should be lighter.

I did some blackening on the pill that I build and now the beam is how I want it :-) I first did the bit on and direct around the led with a black permanent marker, as close to the die and bond wires as I dared, then placed a plastic centering ring over the led with a piece of tape on top to mask the led, and also masking tape around the side of the pill, and spraypainted with two layers of heater paint.

The beam is much cleaner now, there are artifacts but they are so much dimmer than the hotspot that it is only noticable closeby on a white wall.

Camera with exposure set on hotspot:

Camera with exposed set next to the hotspot, the hotspot way way over-exposed:

Very nice.

I personally do not do such mods.

At latest builds I want as much light around hotspot as possible. I even have mirror foil on order. I plan to put it around emitter so maybe it will pump more lumen out in hotspot and flood mode?

Yes that does not look nice on white wall but In nature you get something like "useful spill" :)

Edit: I got green B158 today and first expressions are more than good. Must find some time to modd it.

Edit: I just did mod it with xpg2, djozz fet, bypassed springs, pre collimator lenses. Great lenses. I am to tired to fully charge battery currently but for now it has 240 kcd with LG HG2 (brown) at 3.8V :) Yes that is really insane. It has bit smaller die projection than 1503, and bit better flood mode(not much only 10%), as Djozz mentioned.

Fast photo 3m from blueish wall (looks even clearer than that):

I think it is very dangerous to color emitter with paint cause if even tiny particle comes to dedomed led, it will suck it in and create burning crater inside emitter. I had 2 cases when something fell onto emitter(junk or metal particles) and burned it. Emitter creates a lot of heat and paint will eventually crumble into tiny particles.

22.12 edit: with fully charged LG HG2 330kcd :)
Uniquefire if you read this thread(and I know you guys following this) get plastic lenses for 15.. series of flashlights cause your glass one sucks!

Did I miss a link to an extender somewhere?

Ya, me! I just got mine in the mail today and can now confirm that I can mod the battery tube with a wood sleeve and/or extend it for up to 2 cells. Match the gun stock anyone?

Got my Brinyte today. Pleasantly surprised by the quality and looks. Even stock it performs nice. Plan is to put MTN FET driver and
XP-L V6 3D. Can't wait to see what this zoomie can do at full throttle.

Thank you Mhanlen for your recommendation and for organizing this group buy. Excellent flashlight.

I’m glad everyone is liking it, and no one is having QC issues. It’s a real solid light, at a very nice price. Brinyte seems to be a good company and they were pleasant to work with.

I got mine today, I’m very impressed with it. Every time I’ve bought a zoomie, I’ve always regretted it (even the 1405). Maybe this will be the first I like. I buy aspherics for the throw, and I love how natural and proportional this looks when fully extended. It’s not end-heavy, and there’s no wobble fully extended. Excellent. Even just taking it out of the box, I can tell the lens is much better than my others as well.

Thanks for bringing this to light, mhanlen. (pun intended)

1405 is big and heavy 2x26650 but even shorter version 1504 is to fat and heavy :)

1503 is very good but with plenty of issues. Tweak here and there and you can get very nice flashlight for $. Lenses quality inconsistent. Hope they'll switch to acrylic ones like Brinyte.

There is no doubt B158 is better flashlight out of the box with better lenses.
