Problem with Ke-1 Keygos light just purchased

Hello,

I'm new to the forum, but the group here seems to be the experts in these torches. I was looking for a good/cheap commuting light for my bike, and after doing some reading here, settled on a '1300l' light Cree XM-L t6, with a Keygos / KE-1 body, on a hot deal from hong kong.

In my bike world, you expect to pay $2-300 for a 200 lumen light, and a decent light set can quickly add up to a $1000, so my expectactions were very low on what I was going to get shipped for $30 on a 1300l torch. But, it did indeed come after a couple weeks, and I have a problem. The light quality is good, when it works... It seems as though the overall length is too long, that's my only guess. here's what happens:

The back button is two-function - the on/off is a 'long' press, and then it changes light modes on a shorter/soft press of the button. The long press seems to only work when I unscrew the body a certain amount (the light won't come on when the body is tightended full). When I can successfully turn the torch on/off, the light will randomly change modes when I move the light. When shaken, the modes change, and obviously when I'm on my bike the modes change (which about puts me into a seizure).

I unscrewed the lamp body, and ensured the LED board was as far rearward as possible (while keeping the glass from making noise), and it still changes mode at every bump/shake of the light. My theory is that the contacts are being lost in the button, and there is not enough pressure on the switch to avoid seperation under any king of accel. loads.

Is there a modification to correct this - anyone seen similar issues? I have not contacted the seller, but $30 isn't worth shipping the thing back to hong kong to have the same issue on the next torch. Thanks in advance for your help & thoughts.

Cheers,

Kevin

Hi pmpedalpusher, I also own a KE1, recently purchased from a US dealer, and I had similar problem. I fixed it by tightening both the pill and the tail switch cap (inside the tailcap where there is 2 holes), both of which can come loose.

Make sure that you also tighten the pill all the way, there should be a o-ring in the bezel to keep the lens and reflector in place, preventing rattling.

I also have one of these. Occasionally will have the issue although haven't now for some time. I went to the hardware store and found an o-ring for the glass. The pill needs to be tight and without the 0-ring the glass will rattle so you need to get an o-ring. I didn't find one quite the right size. I got one a couple of mm to large and then just carefully cut out a touch so that it fits correctly.

Also, make sure all the threads are clean and lubed. (I used copper anti-seize but that is a bit messy.)

It make take a bit of fiddling but my guess is that you will really enjoy this light.

pmpedalpusher Do the above your battery may be too long which pushes on the driver and stops it working, you could cut the spring but be careful . Everything has to be tight.

Many thanks for your comments. Good advice on the anti-sieze, I was thinking a dry lubricant would be best, but perhaps this is even better.

I'm not clear on which way to tighten. I adjusted the pill away from the glass (CW)- only enough so the glass wouldn't rattle - it seemed as if there wasn't a hard stop for the pill, that it was only an adjustment. Do you have some guidance as to where it should be adjusted to?

I did look at the cap and couldn't turn via hand/pin/screwdriver. Should this be tightend towards the rear (turned clockwise).

My thought was the the battery would be too short actually, and therefore the soft touch button would reset by the shaking. Perhaps I'm backwards?

Have you tried to clean out all the threads? Remove all of the gritty, grimey stuff including the area around the pill (the threads that encompass the pill).

Most likely the tailcap can be removed although it may not seem like it can move. (I don't have a Ke1 but I do have a Ke5) If there are 2 small holes, it can come out counterCW. Clean the threads around the switch and the threads inside the tailcap.

Once all the threads have been cleaned nicely, put everything back together as tightly as possible, including the pill. It should touch up against the relector which in turn should touch up against the lens. Don't worry about any rattle as we're only trying to diagnose.

If this doesn't solve ur problem, we next need to check the driver.

Also, what kind of cells are you using?

Will do tonight, thanks for the directions. I'm using the batteries which came with the torch.

I put the cap off, and put it back on...now it seems to be working solid Laughing?

I'm afraid to take it apart again, but if there is issues, I'll let you guys know. Thanks so much for your help - this is great resource. It rode into work this morning with it - it's perfect!
