Thorfire C8s Review(one of the HQ C8 lights)900Lm Max output + New pictures of the pill(Removable)

Thanks for reading!

Great review Flash! Sorry I did not see it sooner.

I like my Convoy stuff and I think Simon is a stand up guy BUT........

This Thorfire line is something to look at. It is unfortunate that they chose a ***fire name but in the spirit of Thor it looks like they are dropping a hammer on that.. Personally I like the forethought of Forward Switches as I use them often and although I never would have thought about it when I originally bought Simon's C8...the removable pill will make some mods much easier.

The Thorfire stuff is looking pretty good.

Thanks for the nice review! Great work again.

And there's the driver again that was developed for/first appeared in the BLF X6.

Thanks bugsy36 and djozz!

I love the machining on this flashlight. Absolutely perfect. It is much better than many of the expensive brands.

After reassembling the tailcap and the pill,I can here a high frequency noise on Mid mode :weary: Sometimes the reason is switch vibration. Maybe this is what happened after my intervention. The C8s was absolutely quiet before.

The one with one moon mode and 3 turbo modes?

I think this torch deserves another bump.

Its great !

A few of us in the UK were lucky enough to receive review samples recently.

Mine is post #89.

That will most likely be from the toroidal inductor. On my recent version it is wrapped in a thick material, very different from the usual shrinkwrap.

If yours is not, you could e.g. coat in silicone RTV.

I bet that would fix it. Don’t use anything rigid, or you risk cracking the core.

Fine review. Really like the Thorfires.

Does anyone know what (specific) LED is in here?

Thanks,
J&H

This was my very first real flashlight, after numerous multi-LED AAA junk from various deal sites. I loved it.

Until it was stolen during a house party.

And they keep on. Keeping on.
Better, improved models by the yr.
I had my first C8 yrs ago Ultrafire Q5 Then an Ultrafire XM-L6
Then a Convoy XM-L2.
Currently a SOFURN C8T (Warmer than the C8a model) which is like turning the light on in a dark room. Copared to prev models.
Now I believe they have a 35, 50 ot 70 chip plus drivers in them.

Basically. for 90% of usage. It does ALL you want with decent drivers in there.
I’ve got a cupboard full of torches over last 10 yrs or so.
What do I reach for. Sofurn C8 or my Imalent DN35.
and a Convoy S2+, XP-L (GIVAWAY. Thank’s Southland.) in pocket as spare on walkabout.
With a “BOOM…Daylight”, within range of my old eyes,
Old SKYRAY KING 9 (Updated to XM-L2) pills,
4 cell can light.
Covers whole backyard. 8x4 pool the lot in one hit.
Look out bats.

When you look at it. it really is a (Enjoyable) disease.
Affecting many. costing less than a night in the pub, or a bottle of spirit once a week, with much more enjoyment for much longer time.
My fav torch is still an old (8 or 9yrs)SkyRay S-R5 with XM-L2, driver to match in there now,
was Q8 originally. Drop ins surely help.
Most comfortable torch to hold long term out of all of them.

With a leetle $1.65 Chinese special Delivered (x3)
for bathroom work, Hi\Moon.
Fits perfectly between lips when handling things. Shirt pocket. wife’s bag.

But. We’ll go on forever. Looking. Looking. Wondering.
Maybe the next one hey???.
Human nature is a weird thing when aroused. Thank god.

Back in his box.

So the Thorfire has a good spill? I can’t tell from a wall shot. I ask this because I had a couple of lights that looked exactly like this a couple of years ago (or longer) that I liked a lot. Had very good throw and very good spill too making them very useful as an all purpose light. Well I don’t have them anymore (gave one away and one broke) and lately I’ve tried to find this light again. I’ve tried like 3 times in a row buying cheap knockoffs of this light and all 3 had a very small focused spot at distance and next to no spill around you. I hated all 3 as they were not at all a usable light for me. I don’t know what’s happened since I had those I was talking about but the 3 (all no name brands from different places) I bought since then were complete junk and seemed all had way too focused of a reflector in them or cheap LEDs or something cause they were sure not the same. I read this and wondered if this was a comparable light to what I had. I’d be willing to try again if I don’t get the same thing as the last 3. Here is a link to one of the junk ones I bought and the other two were from ebay. My cheap ass tried to save a buck and struck out 3 times in a row.

video comparison of some C8-sized throwers with different LEDs (stock flashlights)

(building across is around 160 meters or 400 feet distance from the flashlight)

Thorfire C8S (XM-L2)

Convoy C8 (XP-L Hi, U6-3A)

Sofirn C8A (XP-L2)

Do you have any vids of this light like in a backyard or down the block so I can see the spill on it?

Sofirn is clearly the winner in those videos, and rightly so. It’s a 1700 lumen beast in a wash of 800 to 1000 lumen C8’s. Convoy may have made the C8 popular but others just improved upon it.

Only one mans opinion folks, and in that opinion Sofirn is putting out phenomenal C8’s for a very small amount of money. C8T, C8A, and C8F. All very worthy of your hard earned dollar.

Mike89 I have this beam shot of a the Sofirn C8A. The shed is about 100 meters away.

Now that screenshot looks pretty good, a better representative picture of total light. Well I took the plunge and ordered the Sofirn from Here

Hope I get a better flashlight this time than the last 3 lights I bought. Thanks for the tip on the Sofirn. I’ll post back when I get it. To show how long it’s been since I ordered anything from Ali Express is now I notice I did not get put through so many hoops as long ago when they required photo ID and a copy of a bank statement just to order something. Now that junk is gone and they take Paypal now. Much easier to order from them now.

I should have read your post before I posted mine. When you said using the light was like turning on a light switch in a dark room. Now that is what I’m talking about, that’s what I want and what was like the others I’ve had years ago and quite unlike the 3 “no name, save a buck” lights I bought trying to find that light again. Turning on that light switch using the 3 junk ones I bought was akin to seeing a small spot on the wall and not much else. Good for searching for spiders but that’s about it. I need to see what else is around besides the spider. The Sofirn I just bought has shipped and I’m looking forward to checking it out.

Hey.
There are a zillion lights costing up to, and over a grand.

But. For what the normal person (even us idiots\freaks (chuckle)
NEEDS Not wants.
$100 ish MAX will cover our usage. and $50 covering 95% of them.
Most of my torches are UNDER $25. Some with coupons.
Most exxy a Imalent DN35 ($65 AUD Del on coupon $160ish full price)
2 x UF C8 with updated chips\drivers (Passable for friends)

S2\S2+ not bad with an XP-Hi chip in them.

And for walkabout only, (forget the screw out for pencil beam.)
I have a Haekelite HT08.Weird looking torch, then some.
But on coupon Fair price.and gives great flood from your toes forward.
I use that. with a 2 x 18650 Battery headlight with XM-L2 cree in there for looking ahead. Together they work real good.
You don’t “really” need a forever thrower or blind everybody in front of you Spread, to be comfortable and safe on the tracks.

I’ve just bought a little U\Fire with side sw.
but mine had no names on it when it arived. Hmmm,
$6.50AUD del. Ordered a Cree 3x chip and Carclo lens to go with it.
They should??. drop straight in using current driver I’m told.

Just to try a triple head small torch. B4 buying a $40+ unit.
I can always drop Triple and carclo into alternate torch if it don’t work, so nothing lost (I hope)

I just wish some of these mfg’s would make more side sw torches
Us oldies were brought up on them. Rear sw are “weird” and awkward to us.
And PULEEEEEZ. LOW to Hi beams. Whatever where they thinking. Hi first.
Tactical maybe, BUT who. Really. uses tactical in real life?.
Maybe 2% of us. They’re all bloody dreamers.

Ok, just got the Sofirn C8A that I ordered. I was looking forward to getting this after reading this thread and posting about my experiences trying to find a light like this (to replace one I had years ago that I liked) and how I’d struck out 3 times in a row buying cheap knockoffs. I was really hoping I didn’t get another one like the garbage I had bought before. Well after just trying this out in my garage (it’s not even dark outside yet but fairly dark in the garage), I must say,

I’M STILL TRYING TO FIND MY SOCKS CAUSE THEY GOT BLOWN OFF!

I’m super impressed with the light output of this guy. The other 3 lights I bought are now hiding in shame, scared shitless of this new bad boy. I haven’t even tested the modes yet and will do some outside light testing tonight. Just by looking down the reflector, the LED on this light looks over twice the size of my previous junk lights. This is the flashlight I was looking for! Thanks to this thread, I got pointed in the right direction. This light surpassed my expectations and well worth the price I paid for it. I’m going to have to buy a couple more of these guys.

Edit: Testing more in the dark outside and down the street and holy crap martha. You’ve heard of a max overclock on your computer cpu? Well the boys over at Sofirn overclocked the shit out this thing. Makes me kind of question the longevity of this light a little, and I doubt there is going to be much run time on full blast but hell, gimme the light baby. This does just that. You will be able to tell who has one of these walking down the street at night. He will be wearing shades.

Try the C8F . More flood. Good throw.

Liked this light so much, I ordered another one, this time the C8T. Just got it today and took it out tonight to give it a go with my C8A. Hit another home run. The lights are pretty close. Both bright as hell with the C8T having a bit more throw and a more whiter tint in comparison to the C8A (which is a bit more slanted towards the yellow). These are now my main two lights. They are everything I need and want in a light. At full tilt, they both get pretty warm pretty quick. These lights don’t mess around. More power than I need most of the time but it’s sure damn nice to have it when you want it. What a deal for the price I paid for these. They will light up the whole damn block, throw out as far as I need, and like turning on a light switch in a dark room. The only other light I’ve seen that’s as good a deal is this one Three LEDs using 3 batts but a damn good light and deal also, with the added bonus of having a weapon to hit someone over the head with if you needed to (if the light didn’t blind them, I still got a club). Over the years I’ve paid over a 100 bucks for a flashlight. Never again. Now I kick myself in the butt for ever having done it (and I’ve done it more than once). No more wallet draining lights for me, too many good cheap ones out now to choose from.
