[07-MAR-2016] Current status of BLF upgrade process

For those that use the Advanced Post Editor, either on the forum or in private messages, here's a link to the Smiley Acronyms:

http://budgetlightforum.com/filter/tips#filter-smiley

How about “Discharge”?

(I would actually like “readed”, one of many repairs to the grammar, but others might make fun of you.)

I can't think of a better idea, so sure! :crown:

(Sorry for the late reply. Sometimes I don't reply at all, but I'm fixin' to change that. :shy: )

G'Day SB, :)

(1). In the Advanced Post Editor, currently can't paste when do a R-Click (there is no such option).

The only way is by using <Ctrl><v>

Previously the Advanced Post Editor had editing options when did a R-Click eg:Copy, Paste, etc. They are all missing now

(2). Any chance of getting back the button "Mark Forum as Read" at the top right?

Thank you Very Much,

George

To copy or paste, click on Edit (which is between File and Insert) and choose Copy or Paste. ;)

Forget what I said. I don't know what I'm talking about.

Is The Rollover Code Still The Same?

Like this?
See it in action here.
(Please feel free to add the other tricks & change the URLs.)

Thank you RC, yes I am aware of that facility. But the R-Click context menu doesn't require you to move the mouse pointer from where you are to the top.

And it was available previously, & it is a normal feature on OSs & forums.

Ooh!

Now I wast a R-Click context menu, too. :D

 Thank you s…… Wait. No.

You are evil sb. You left out my favorite smiley of all.

Also, it appears, you are a Grinch who hates Christmas.

Well, at least the beer is back to its normal size. All is right with the world. Good night.

Oops, thanks a lot for letting me know. I originally had it configured that way, and then proceeded to break my own configuration. :D Should be fixed now. The browser's context spellchecker should also work now.

You bet.

Oops. I’m afraid it’s a bit difficult to add them back now. The configuration section of the Smiley module is refreshingly devoid of all semblance of design and usability.

But… when there is time, after other things, right? Right…? :(( :((

By the way, have I told you what a wonderful Admin you are recently? Exceedingly kind, intelligent and handsome too. Not one to forsake even a poor little ghost.

At the risk of looking like I’m calling someone out (there are plenty of examples, this is just handy) is there any way to limit the amount of quoted text?

Post 265 above looks like this on my phone:

Google Drive link works maybe?

Maybe it doesn’t bug anyone else, I feel like quoting the ENTIRE post is rarely required.

I could limit quotes to a certain number of levels, but I’m not sure if everyone would like that.

IMO while the number of quote levels was excessive in your example (fairly minor forum-etiquette issue), the real issue is simply that the forum’s styles do not change at all on smaller screen sizes. The margins/spacing in use there exacerbate the issue greatly.

For example, compare these two screenshots:

Some forums limit to the last quote, but i agree that its not an ideal solution. One thing i have noticed is some forums have the link to the quote

One could implement say last 5 quotes, every quote links to its source hence the first of the 5 link to the last one, which would show the previous 5, which links to the previous, so a few clicks can get you to the first post without having the crazy long quotes

I’m sure i am explaining this badly, trying my best

G'Day SB,

SB, it is now working, thank you Very Much.

Ooooopssssss, I saw the <Mark Read> button at top left & I pressed it while in this sub-forum, BUT it marked the entire forum including all sub-forums as read.

I assumed it would Only mark the current sub-forum as read (as it did previously).

AFAIK, the only <Mark Read> button that marked the entire forum (including sub-forums) as read was in the "root" forum ie: http://budgetlightforum.com/forum

Is the current behaviour wrong, Or?

Thank you Very Much,

George

I’m for a reasonable limit on quotes. I don’t know what it would take to ‘tile’ them in a stack (click on what you want to see) of to collapse them by default then add an “expand” button to read them.

That’s really been my biggest issue since I signed up here so I’d say you’re doing very well indeed SB.

Phil

I just did a quick test and found that it’s fairly simple to hide any quotes deeper than N levels. I tried to put in a placeholder for “(quote omitted)” instead though, and it didn’t work. So it’s easy to do if you don’t mind not knowing whether there are deeper quote levels.

I also made the dark theme use less padding around quotes, so it doesn’t turn into a vertical column so quickly.

With it set to N=3 (limit to three levels of quoting), the same post looks like this:

One big downside of doing this is that it might encourage people to quote even deeper, since they might not be able to see that they’re including so many levels.

Edit: FWIW, this can be done as an independent stylesheet so you can get the same effect regardless of what theme you’re using. If you want, you can try it here.
