Home Depot Deal Alerts & Discussion Thread

Sorry to go off topic, but………

Remember poiiy mentioned that there were a lot of florescent lights on sale at the “3” price. That meant that they were priced at about 75% off. It also meant that the next stop would be marked to a penny and pulled from the shelves. In my stores there must have been 20 or 30 different florescent light fixtures marked down 75%. Here are a couple of examples that I shot as I thought they were interesting

And this one with a special shield and cold start capabilities.

Up until yesterday there were lights at the “3” price all over the store.
Yesterday they all suddenly dissappeared!
To me that meant they were all marked to a penny and pulled from the shelves. :-((
But wait, I did come across these fixtures at the clearance section.j There they were, 5 boxes of 24” closet fixtures with an included T8 bulb.

They missed pulling these
I was sooooo sure they would ring up for a penny that I grabbed one and went up to the self checkout. Instead of checking for price, I checked out. Was I surprised when it rang up for $6.33!, Oh well.
This morning I realized that I could actually use this fixture at a rental and I installed it. Nice light.
Before I threw the box out, I cut the UPC bar code off and stuck it in my wallet.

This afternoon I found myself at my Home Depot once more and instead of walking in the entrance I came in thru the exit next to the self checkouts. As I passed, I reached in my wallet at scanned the UPC code I had cut out. It scanned for a penny. Just yesterday I bought 1 and paid $6.33, If they were still there I could now get them for a penny!
As luck would have it, they were, and I did
What a difference a day makes.

Here is a tool I use to print UPC bar codes for this purpose. Just go to this link and type in the UPC code numbers and it will generate a graphic of the bar code which you can then save and print out. Good for checking prices of know items that you want to keep an eye on.

http://generator.barcoding.com/

Here are 3 bar codes I printed out with this site. Just type the numbers at the bottom of each and generate this picture.

The top one is the bar code for the twin AA and AAA Maglite Pro combo. The current clearance price is $20 for the 2, but that one HD I was at discounted them further to $10. Other stores will probably do the same in the future.
The second one is the Defiant 3D Max and is currently reduced to $15, down from $29.95
The last one is a plumbing tool and pouch set that I saw on a clearance table with no price. I got the numbers from a photo I took of it and used those numbers to print this out. Later I scanned it and found out it was priced at $14.98. Doesn’t sound like a clearance price.

You can return one of them and get your $6.33 back

LOL, I didn’t even think of that!

I do have a separate receipt for that one I “over paid” for.
Thank you very much.

And here I was cost averaging them in my head at 5 units for $6.33 plus 0.04 or about $1.27 each.

LOL! <:-)
I’ve done it a few times over the years, spark plugs at half price the following week, $75 off a dehumidifier, $45 off a window A/C things like that

Some other deals I came across over the weekend (While everyone else here was setting mouse traps)
200 piece tool set and tool box. $50.04. It was the last one and was stowed away on an overhead.

1/2” Drive and sockets, combination wrench sets and allen head wrenches.

3/8” Drive and sockets. Metric and English AND deep sockets.

Top drawer is full of 1/4” stuff.

Home Depot has cleared out all of their Johnson levels and have brought in another vendor. If you can find them, the 24” level is $2.83 and the 48” is $4.03

The new stock. List prices.

Yesterday the Maglite on the left was marked at $15.00. Today it is $14.06. The one on the right was $20, now it is $19.06
This means that they both are on the clearance spiral.

As I walked by I noticed these 2 Stanley tool kits.

No price, but I KNEW it would be good. These were all over the place for Black Friday and were reduced to $10 at Christmas time. Then they were gone.
Now suddenly here are 2, not priced. So I brought them up to scan. $3.82 each.

The register says “132 piece tool set” but 100 of those pieces are screws and lags.

I ended up picking up one of these 2900 lumen LED shop lamps.

They rang up at $25.

Holy crap so all fluorescent light fixtures are 1¢?! :open_mouth:
Wow is tubular fluorescent really obsolete already? (well I suppose so because I think they were around for a long time, unlike CFLs)
I also couldn’t find the fluorescent fixtures where I thought they were.
I did see one (maybe more) fixtures in clearance. Maybe I had just overlooked a ’cent’er! :open_mouth:
Also that one store that still had the clear cups and water bags for 1¢ have finally removed them and reorganized the stuff. :frowning:

Here are some stuff I found

We just now caught another mouse!
Mmm… freshly caught mouse!
This mouse was well alive while I brought it outside to dump it.
When I released it, it launched right out and bounced away.
I wonder how much damage the mouse trap does to a mouse… this mouse was well enough to walk. Perhaps it is internally damaged and although it can still walk now, it will die soon?

Its supposed to snap their neck so they die in under 1 minute.

That is an awesome deal. 4’ LED shop light for $25!

I’ve got to look out for that.
Was it actually $25.03?

I took the numbers from the UPC code and typed them into the bar code generator site to get this graphic.

I printed it out and will scan it at HD when I return one of the 24” under cabinet lights.

^
That does seem like a great deal. Nice score deathless.

Picked up one of those 4 foot aluminum levelers for $4.03. Great deal. Thanks for the alert dchomak!

This feels too much like abusing the system to me. Isn’t taking advantage of their system to get things at a penny enough? I know, I know, there’s a winky there and it may just be in jest but still… it feels wrong.

Home Depot has set up for themselves what I call “a gotcha”

They mark items at a penny and pull them off the shelves. If they miss something it will ring up at the self checkout at a penny. (the gotcha)

Home Depot has set up another gotcha. Take out one of their credit cards, miss a payment and
GOTCHA
$35 late payment fee
They are all too happy to partake in that “gotcha” and I am all too willing to partake in mine.

You”re right though, bringing that first light back is maybe a bit over the top.
In all of this, it is important to me that I do this with a pure heart.
(There is no fun in taking candy from a baby)

What would be really, really, wrong is bring it back and get my $6.33 back and then a couple of days later find it on a shelf and buy it back for a penny. LOL

What is wrong with returning an item that you bought?

There’s nothing wrong with it in general. It’s this specific set of circumstances that I feel pushes it too far.

If I bought something at, or near, full price and it soon thereafter went on sale I would gladly go back for my discount. Buying an item that has already been significantly reduced in price and then returning it because you’re able to take advantage of the system and get it from them for nearly nothing? Nah. Remember, we’re not supposed to be able to buy this stuff at a penny anyway. That final discounted price is supposed to be the best we can get.

Play the game. Enjoy the game. Don’t abuse the game.

Just my opinion.

Yes that is your opinion; I see nothing wrong with it.

How is it bad to return and buy it again for 1¢ but not bad to buy it for 1¢ in the first place? It makes no difference either way.

He said he is not going to return it and repurchase at 1 cent, just return and walk away.

The impact of dchomak playing by big orange’s rules and returning stuff is negligible.

What burns my proverbial toast is people buying stuff; looting the box for parts; then bringing it back as if it’s perfectly good for resale. I buy it (if it’s been repackaged well and I can’t tell that it’s been tampered with), get to the job and then discover that I need to make a return trip.

Yes, I know. It’s the returning it at all, because you later took advantage of the system and got it for a penny, that bothers me. Why take it back other than to further abuse the system? You already got a good deal on it. Be happy with what you have.

For me it’s a game to balance buying it at a ridiculously low price and them running out of stock. If the price goes down after I purchase and I want more then I buy more. If they’ll discount the previous purchase(s) even better. Anything purchased at these low prices is already a good deal. I count myself lucky to have gotten them. Penny deals are like a rare bonus and shouldn’t impact prior purchases.

Not everybody will agree with me and that’s OK. I won’t do it but that doesn’t mean you can’t.
