Convoy L6... XHP70 Beast!

^ what he said…

One step forward and two steps back…

There is good news and bad news my friends.

Good: Simon got the first sample of the L6. :GRADE:

Bad: They used the wrong side switch in the sample so it can’t handle the current? :weary:

So there are still a few things to be worked out before we can see some real progress but I can confirm that it sure is a good looking light! The L2’s big brother looks mean.

Down the barrel:

Enjoying the breeze:

Hanging out with some good friends:

So, while it’s not exactly what I wanted to report at least we have a few pictures to drool over until the time comes. :-}

Edit As a few have pointed out the side switch is an e-switch so does not carry any current. I don’t know exactly what Simon was referring to but it might be heat. He did mention long ago that the first switch they tried did not like the heat from the XHP70. Whatever the case it’s a small setback but all will be worked out.

Nice! Is the head significantly larger than the L2? I’m having a hard time to tell by the picture. Also, why would the side switch need to be high current?

Yeah, don’t understand that, the side switch is electronic and only supposed to switch modes through the MCU, not carry current. Somebody wired it up wrong it would seem.

Also, how does it compare with the Thorfire S70?

That monster looks awesome!

Really nice looking flashlight. Hope it won’t be pricier than S70.

so will this be brighter/throw further than M4D MAX’s mod of the S50/70, do we know?

and is the one forward two back the news within 2 weeks, or will there be an actual ‘for sale’ announcement soon?! looking a nice light……

Very impressive exterior. I like it.

I think they will be have parity by price.
Now i see it so:
Convoy L6 - 51$ (with discount)
Thorfire S70 - 50$ (with discount)

No idea guys. I’m just the messenger here. He said “there is little problem with the switch ,factory didn’t use big current version switch”. That’s all I got.

As far as the head goes it’s just a little bigger than the L2, maybe 5mm or so. Simon says the head diameter of the L6 is 72mm.

Even though I had seen the drawing at the start of this thread months ago, somehow I was expecting the design to have changed a fair bit to in order to grab the attention of buyers like myself especially with the Thorfire coming to the market and getting good reviews and being sold at a discounted price.

That’s not to say it won’t out perform the S70 though.

As a few have pointed out the side switch is an e-switch so does not carry any current. I don’t know exactly what Simon was referring to but it might be heat. I’m hoping between this one and the S70 that many parts interchange. Would really be nice for a bunch of 26650 lego’s.

I understand what you mean but remember (or maybe you didn’t know) that this light started as a request for changes to be made to the L2. Simon kept telling us he would consider all of our requests in the next version. With the number of changes being incorporated I asked that he change the name to avoid more confusion. It’s bad enough that there are technically 3 different models all referred to as the Convoy L2. :–5 So,at least a step was made in breaking that trend.

I must admit, the Thorfire S70 was completely unexpected. It is as you stated, a well made budget XHP70 light… so yes, it certainly is a competitor. I have one. I’m not going to lie. It’s a nice light at a nice price.

That said, it’s not bringing the exact same things to the table. I think the L6 will stand out in a few areas like looks, size, knurling and modes to name a few.

In the looks department I definitely prefer the aesthetics of the L6.

This is just my opinion but the S70 is a bulky monster that comes with what’s essentially a rifle sling to carry it. Most XHP70 lights are huge. To be fair, the S70 might have a bit more heat shedding potential with that giant head but I want to run them both side-by-side before I declare a winner.

The L6 will be a bit easier to carry. Not that it’s exactly compact but it should prove a bit more manageable. It shares the same good looks as it’s little brother L2 with the addition of a very nicely crafted side switch and just a slightly bigger head.

As far as knurling goes, the S70 has some rings on the tube but no knurling at all. The L6 shares the same block style knurling that I love on the L2.

The tactical ring in the L6 is also nicer IMO. That’s one thing I don’t like on the S70. Their tactical ring is a bit too thin and “sheet-metaly” IMO and a bit sharp on the edges.

The L6 will have better mode spacing. The output of the S70 is impressive but the low is too high.

As far as output, the numbers are only estimates but I think it will be in the same ballpark as the S70 but I won’t know until I have it in my hands. The L6 estimated output is 3500 lumens. The S70 is listed as 3000 lumens but I agree with what others have said about it probably being higher than 3000. I have no way to test it though. The L6 is also going to be an awesome host for any of the large die emitters like the MT-G2 and XHP50.

In the end we have two more solid choices in an XHP70 stock light but each offers a few different things. Win-Win for BLF.

and will the L6 be as easily modable as the S50/70 for even more output, or is it designed for max lumens out of the box?

Definitely, I’m very much looking forward to the first review.

The OP says:
• Reflector diameter 65.48mm
• Head diameter 72mm
So if that is correct the reflector of the L6 is approximately 11.48mm bigger in diameter (~21) as the L2’s reflector. And just a couple mm’s bigger (~5) than the S70’s reflector.
Made a drawing to visualize: (picture is very close to scale 1to1, that means those cirkels represent the actual dimensions of the ID of the reflectors)

Hey thank you for putting all that together. If that’s all accurate and the L6 reflector is larger that the S70 reflector that is good news for us.

The S70 dimension and the L2 dimension are measured with a simple ruler thus not 100% accurate (but still within 1mm
That is indeed good news.

Will Simon make a smooth reflector, so we can choose between smooth and orange peel, for the host? That way we have a wide variety of options! I mean this L6 might look similar than the L2 but its still a different beast!

I’m not holding you to 100% accuracy buddy. I appreciate the approximated comparison you did.
He did say he would make both smooth reflectors for the L6 and OP for the L2 but not until after the first run of the L6. So it may be a little while but in the end we should have both reflector options for both of these big lights.
