Review: Eagle Eye X5 (Update: Outdoor Beamshots Added!)

OK. Not much longer than my Convoy M2.

For some reason the photos make it seam long.

To be exact, it’s 13.2 cm or 5.2 inches.

Nice review. I don’t know if I should thank you or hate you for providing a link to the Eagle Eye store on Aliexpress. I have some Convoys, BLFs/Astroluxes, a couple of Jaxmans, and 1 Eagle Eye flashlight in my collection. Now that I’ve browsed through their store, should I add a few more Eagle Eye flashlights to my collection? There can be only one answer to that question.

Thanks for the review.
How does the knurling compare to the P12 or BLF A6?
I have Eagle Eye F35 and it’s not very grippy. It is worse than most of my other lights in this area.

P.S.: The link to the JetBeam holster is broken.

Thank you for taking the time doing this review. Every bit you said about the quality of the light reminds me of my BLF EE-X6. Except for the driver of course, but that issue is solved by putting in the LD-2 driver from member led4power.

Thanks for the very good review. I did not know this light and think with its electronic side-switch it is a step nicer than the Convoys. And even though the mode-spacing is not great, I have seen much worse! The only real con for me is mode memory, I do not like mode memory (just can not, and do not want to have to, remember in which mode I leave a flashlight) so this light is not for me.

Link to your holster needs to be corrected: https://www.fasttech.com/product/1539701

And I agree with the OP that these are great quality holsters!

Oops, thank you! Updated the OP to fix the link.

Looking at the F35 online, I’d the say the knurl is about the same. If you have an EE X6, for sure it’s exactly alike. The A6 and P12 definitely have a bit of a more aggressive knurl.

Thank you for this great review

That’s interesting! On my reverse-clickies, I’m the same way. I love having lights turn on in moonlight mode every time, but not so much in lights with side-buttons. It would be neat if they could implement shortcuts to the lowest mode in lights like these, such as pressing the tailcap switch while holding the side-button. That way you can be sure of what mode will be on.

Thank you for your most thorough and useful review.

Thanks for review. I was thinking more about X5R, now there’s bigger chance that I could give it a try.

The X5R is the light that I have my sights on next! I’m really curious about it and its differences with the X5. From the photos, I think it looks a tiny bit thicker, but I’m not sure. The description says there’s 4 modes + strobe, but maybe that’s not accurate. It was pulled from EE’s aliexpress page, which is interesting.

I have an X5R and the mode description is correct. I have promised a review of it, but have been so busy with other things my only “BLF time” has been my downtime at work. If you have a specific question about it I can try to answer, just taking pictures and measurements might take a few more days.

Awesome, I have a quick question that I’ve been wondering about!
Is the charging procedure similar to the X6R? Where you must turn on tailswitch, plug-in USB cable, and double press side button for the light to switch off. Or does the light automatically turn off after plugging in the USB cable?

My gramps loves his X6R, but he always charges it head-down (usually on medium) and doesn’t care to double press the side button to switch it off while it’s charging. I’t be cool if the X5R would change that as he really doesn’t need the throw.

It’s just a little different. The tail switch still has to be on of course, but after the cable is plugged in it’s a single click on the side switch to turn off the light. I’d say it’d be pretty difficult to head-stand an X5R and charge, so that might be enough incentive for him to turn it off. The annoying thing is that once it stops charging it turns the light back on, so no charging on top of a nightstand with this one.

I am concerned about the 2A charge rate of the internal charger of the X5R: Isn’t this too high for the 18650 cells?
(Of course you could use a 1A-USB-adapter for a lower rate.)

I don’t know of many common 18650’s that would exceed spec by charging at 2amps, but some people choose not to. I haven’t measured it yet to see if it actually does charge at 2amps, but I know mine slightly under-charges, terminating at ~4.16v (still within most specs)

That seems better than the X6R, so that’s good to hear! A bit weird that it turns back on after charging, but I still think it’ll be an improvement. Thanks for the answer.
