Re-post: How to deal with trolls

Whats wrong with the moderator we have now. If you have any issues PM him as he has requested and the problems are dealt with.

Nothing wrong at all, but perhaps he could use a bit of help? If you have more than one, they can discuss issues in a group and be around a bit more (as I guess sb isn’t here 24/7). Obviously this is totally up to him, it’s his forum after all. I would like a Cometa thread (as mine finally arrived, and so far it looks and feels absolutely awesome!) that hasn’t derailed, but if certain people aren’t told to tone it down a bit, I guess we will end up with another closed thread in a few days if I start one.

The forum has been here for several years and one of the reasons this forum started, was because the owner here disagreed with the way CPF was structured and he started this one. He is the only moderator and I believe it will always be as it is. If you have concerns, address them to him and that is how it works. If he agrees, then something will change and if not, then at least you got your answer. Some people feel more moderation is necessary, others do not. Internet forums will always and forever be a source of aggravation and animosity, as well as a source of fun and openness to vent and they will always be a source of controversy. It's what we are, that makes this what it is. Sometimes I agree with it and other times I do not, but I have always come back here over and over, where I do not in other more controlled forums. Some people here have gone on to start their own forums, because they do not agree with how this one is run. Everyone is free to like it or not, no problem either way.

We’re supposed to be self moderating adults. I’m glad he has a light touch or this place would have a completely different atmosphere. Occasionally things go sideways but by the time a thread is closed or someone does get the axe it’s pretty obvious there was a need for him to act. In some cases just bumping this thread is enough of a reminder for people to remember the forum rules and chill but some think they are entitled to mouth off anyway. It seems to take either egregious behavior or consistently trollish posts to get tossed. Simply being an occasional irritant doesn’t seem to trip the alarm. Threads that degenerate into sadly useless conflagrations lose whatever good info was in them unless it can be posted again elsewhere so protect the resource that a thread represents. If you haven’t been here long, please keep this in mind. Those who have surely do.

Rufusbduck’s post #116 doesn’t rhyme, but it is poetic. Read it guys. Heed it. A little personal responsibility goes a long way. We should all be grown up enough for that. If I am, everyone is.

I intentionally skip any Cometa threads. Their lights do nothing for me. Seems like I missed a couple of flame wars.

Enjoying the Fruits of Liberty is easy.

Remember everyone else has the same Free Speech Right as you do.

Don’t feed the trolls.

Mischief managed!

Except maybe the North Koreans ………

“Love that barbecue!”

Its not just the Cometa it is all group buys they always create a lot of problems. People pay good money and don’t get what they are promised. Things get heated! With all the group buys also makes the website grow so new people join and don’t know the rules.
We all have our moments but people who don’t learn are completely different.

Well let me use this as place to present my ideas for the later stage of the Q8 GB
First we aim for as little issues as possible but we can safely assume all do that
So if an issue is found I want to start a Q8 problems and solutions thread right away
Update the original OP with a link to that.
Then be on top of things, hear people, work on solutions and keep everybody posted about that and its (lack of) progress.
My analysis of the biggest drama in previous gbs is that organisers do not respond promptly enough to issues creating a void where people feeling not listened to start to express themselves more strongly in an effort to be heated what causes others to react either defending organisers or vendors or just to express support to the people who got problems and drama is born.

Sometimes organisers can react nasty themselves when things have spiraled out of control so a negative dynamics can begin to unfold.

Yet I am confident it can be avoided with a more proactive approach and good preparation of the light.

Oh yeah I like the way it is going here without mods and indeed agree we have a responsibility of our own
Go BLF and go SB!

With some of the things that happen in GB’s I’m not sure if I could handle it as well or better so I hope you do well when the inevitable happens.

Bump to remind myself

And soon the Brazilians, too.

One thought — we all can slip.

I try to think of trolling — an activity, a verb, a behavior, something I might be doing
If I don’t think twice about what I write.
It’s laying the bait out there, taking up the slack on the line, and just waiting to see who takes the bait.

Or not doing, and not is better.

A powerful few questions worth considering, at

http://nymag.com/scienceofus/2016/03/heres-a-test-to-measure-your-need-for-drama.html

That’s a measure for one’s tendency to veer into drama.

That’s not the dedicated kind of trolling — what our host talks about in the original post, done by people who search for online forums and troll the hell out of them, singly or in organized groups.

Anyone who hasn’t read the alt.syntax.tactical FAQ from the Usenet days should look it up. The article is ancient in Internet years, but the methods still work.

The “need for drama” test is kind of a measure of our susceptibility to that stuff.

Eschew.

Sadly, also people with low self-esteem issues want to gain approval from their peers will often act this way. Lonely people. Sometimes also a man who is highly controlled by his wife will try to gain control of others in a discussion group like these. Brown nosing is another real popular one, an attempt to gain acceptance from his peers to feel as though he/she is part of a group.

lol

This thread apparently needs another bump. :person_facepalming:

I sense a lot of unnecessary rudeness and trollish behavior lately, specially with some of the “new” members.

One of my favorite dumb movies of all times  I’ll probably watch it tonight.
