REWIEW OF LUMINTOP SD4A

Hello guys today I present the new version of Lumintop SD4A kindly sent by Lumintop for testing.


lumintop sd4a has just output and replaces the old sd10, it is sold in two types one with LED xml-2 NW another with LED xpl hi-CW. the torch is really comfortable to hold in your hand, has limited dimensions, it works with standard AA batteries, with impressive performance. My version is the one that mounts the LED xpl HI. In the package we are: the instructions, the torch, 1 O-ring parts, the strap and a sheet that explains the UI of the torch. It ’a nice box to see!

I’ve never owned one and tried the lumintopo torch is I’m really impressed by the quality of construction and materials, but now we see more specifically the model in question. We pick up the SD4A and we can break down into two main pieces that are
BODY

from the very eye-catching color, this black anodized HAIII. My model is free from defects of any kind. The quality seems very high, it gives me the feeling of being as strong as the famous fenix. Anodizing by a good feed, is not slippery and seems to resist well to shocks. The materials are of good quality and give a sense of strength, the precise machining and clean the male thread with square section and seat of ’OR come to the house well greased and free of debris.

The thicknesses also generous here they allow to have an object from the great solidity throughout its length, width and thickness, with a consistent weight of 178g without batteries, a little unbalanced on the front because of the big head that houses parable, LED, circuit and keys. Knurling present throughout the body by a good grip both with bare hands with gloves. On the bottom we have no switch, allowing us to have a very solid tailstand. Given the small size of just 41mm it is also suitable for most small hands. All ’inside we see a ring free of anodization, mezzanine that serves as the contact for the battery carrier or to the single battery D.

HEAD: In the lead are the crown of stainless with polished finish, it has an anti rolling, but in my opinion is not very effective design, but it does not work as evacuation hammer is used to protect and seal the anti-reflective glass with transmittance of 98/99%, the parable in aluminum finish SMO deep and wide and the XPL-HI lED is perfectly centered in a well executed centraled that holds everything stopped, the lED has a good hue CW without color domimanti.

We also find the operating MODE and ON / OFF, made of rubber, blacks and embedded in the head by 6 Phillips screws that hold the plate in stainless steel that stops everything. Allow us to navigate in the way that gives us the UI of SD4A. The used rubber and very soft and resistant even to the pressure you have a great feeling and you do not hear any clik. Even with gloves can be easily found and the right distance allows the clik of both without problems.

Below the ON / OFF button are two green LEDs are illuminated, this indicates that when the low battery voltage and therefore we will limit the torch to extend runtime. I could not take a picture because in my case it is off. maybe I should try using a single cell download. (Photo by another forum)
3/4 head has dissipation fins of the heat deep enough and accurate, also the last hole to tie the strap supplied. They carry out their work excellently because the torch to the TURBO enough level but warms you use it safely, because SD4A has also incorporated the overheating prevention mechanism.

BATTERY CARRIER POWER and BATTERIES
To hold 4 AA lumintop the thought of creating a carrier battery instead of grooving into the copolymer, doing so can encourage the entry of other batteries outside of AA. This carrier is very well built and solid, the aluminum skeleton is all held together by four rods screwed with 8 screws, 4 per side. The contacts are all welded on a pbc that shows the various polarities written in white, to the positive pole we see the springs brass buttons and to the negative welded with a good amount of tin. AA enter without problems, they remain firmly and not run away if the carrier is shaken, all ’inside of the flashlight has no game and will not make any noise. Another special feature is that we can put in any position the carrier so that it can not go wrong polarities.

Highlight of the SD4A is the power which is carried out mainly by AA disposable batteries or rechargeable NIMH, but in an emergency you can insert a D battery, however, making it lower the brightness. consequently making two calculations the driver supports a very wide range of voltages ranging from 1.2V to 6V, this then allows us to be able to use any kind of battery using suitable adapters on the market. So we can indulge ourselves with batteries in case of a zombie attack hehehe! : Bfg9000: I make a small list of what we could really use: 4xAA 1xD 1xAAA + adapter D 1xAA + adapter D 1x10140 + D adattaore 1x14500 + adapter D and with a little ingenuity and simple materials to make contacts and thicknesses we can go to use also: cr123, 16340, 16500, 18500, 26500, C (mezzatorcia) on lumintop site also I read that you can have an extension to accommodate the classic Li then: 18650, 26650, 32650. I remember that the use of the individual AAA AA C D halves torch power. Excellent design LUMINTOP!
ACCESSORIES
: How Included are the usual OR robust and nice thick reserves, the lace ORANGE rescue with stationary slip. Lack unfortunately the case and personally I would have liked to have a small speaker of the given set of impressive throw xpl-HI model
LEVELS AND BEAM
As we can see the levels are well spaced and allow you to have a range that can satisfy all tastes. TURBO 920 lumens feels that well-led and driven by the driver that delivers about 3 / 3.1 Amp and the heat after about 15 minutes, stood at 40 ° C / 42 ° C runtime it is true, on my model batteries to full charge (eneloop 2100mah) stop after 1.45h with a temperature of 48 ° c: twisted: (Environment 21 ° c remember that the torch is adjusted really well based on the outside temperature, the lower, the smaller the loss of light step ) 510 lumens HIGH useful for all common uses and runtime of 2.0h about a real convenience! MID da310 lumen to avoid disturbing the neighbors or tent. by the runtime of about 4h. LOW 35 lumens usbile for a quick look around without abbagliarsi, MOON LIGHT 3 Lumen to go around without disturbing anyone. 552h of autonomy we are all, I believe in the given LUMINTOP. Strobe and SOS 920 lumens make sd4a an excellent ally for camping! The lumintop sd4a produces a beam which in my opinion is great for a mixed use by flashlight (EDC, camping, hiking etc …), large spill that illuminates well in the first 50m and 40,000 lux spot that allows the open field vision up to 250m in an excellent manner. the spot is beautiful large so watch large areas at a time. right now it is what I prefer in my torches. The tint in my model does not present any kind of dominant, a nice pleasant coolwhite but not too cool.



UI :

The UI is very simple you learn in 5 minutes. carry a well-made chart and I remember that on the instructions are well explained all. The torch mantein the level used before turning off and store it for next use. Ignition through ON / OFF button and loop through mode from LOW-MID-HIGH-TURBO, off via ON / OFF

Moonlight
You access unlit torch with long press the ON / OFF button, if we want to get out of Moonlight press ON / OFF to go to the stored mode or press MODE to change the intensity, starting from the stored mode.

Strobe Mode
Accessing unlit torch with a long press of the MODE button, if we want to get out of STROBE press ON / OFF to go to the stored mode or press MODE to change the intensity, starting from the stored mode.

SOS mode
Accessing lit torch with a long press of the ON / OFF button, if we want to get out SOS press ON / OFF to go to the stored mode or press MODE to change the intensity, starting from the stored mode.

Mode Beacon
Accessing lit torch with a long press of the MODE button, if we want to get out of BEACON press ON / OFF to go to the stored mode or press MODE to change the intensity, starting from the stored mode.

Locking and Unlocking
You access the lit torch on and off with a long press of the ON / OFF button + MODE, if we want to exit the block press the ON / OFF MODE + to go to the stored mode or press MODE to change the intensity, starting from the stored mode. In both cases the torch emits 5 flashes to warn of the block or from the release.

This position suffers from a small parasticdrain, alternatively use common and classic loosening of the head on the body. I found a flaw in the UI quite uncomfortable, when we are in one of MOONLIGHT mode, Strobe, SOS, Beacon can not put out the torch directly, but we are forced to go from the last memorized mode and then switch off with ON / OFF.

CONCLUSIONS
To be my first Lumintop I am really impressed by the quality of the materials and the really interesting and functional design. A torch SD4A thousand uses from camping to hiking and control, to discourage the use of police forces to the weight and ergonomics. It is not a TACTICAL torch. a steel sprocket gives her a sense of strength and the beam it emits is very balanced in all, good switch and its UI fast and practical. Let down a bit by a few accessories provided and also from antiroll little antiroll …I give an 8 out of 10
PRO dimensions mixed batteries emitted light beam
AGAINST Few accessories (NO holster, would welcome a diffuser) Weight secondary mode can not be disabled instantly.

How do you know that the XM-L2 version of the SD4A is neutral white? I couldn’t find any info on their product page that describes the tint.

Amazon shows the XM-L2 as Neutral White, and the XP-L HI as Cool White.

That’s true. But from my previous research on the Lumintop SD4A, the Amazon seller “AONIRO J” is the only seller that I’ve found that actually advertises the XM-L2 as neutral white. In fact, I posted a question asking for the tint color temperature, because the color temperature was not previously in the product title. I wanted to make sure that “neutral white” was for real. He replied with 4000-4500K, and changed the title.

AONIRO J is also the only seller I’ve seen so far that sells a neutral white aluminum Lumintop Tool, and the only seller that sells a Nichia 219B aluminum Lumintop Tool, but only on Amazon Japan. It makes me wonder if AONIRO J is selling custom builds of Lumintop flashlights.

I ordered the SD4A and Lumintop Tool from AONIRO J, so I can confirm they really are neutral white. But I asked the question about the XM-L2 tint because no one else advertised the SD4A XM-L2 as neutral white, and I didn’t want the OP’s review to mistakenly claim that ALL SD4A XM-L2s are neutral white unless he was sure.

Thanks for the information. Perhaps you can provide one more piece of info — Lumintop is not real clear on what’s required for the SD4A to take a 18650 or 26650 cell. Is the battery chamber long enough, and all that’s required is an appropriate diameter adapter?

Now the SD4A can’t carry any 18650 or 26650 cell as it is not long enough :person_facepalming: ~

I wish Lumintop were more clear as to if / where we can buy an extension to take longer cells, or whether their website information was a cut & paste mistake from the previous SD10 model description?

Not sure what wrong with the light, everything look fine until i switch to SOS mode.

Very disappointed

Nice looking light ! I wander if they kept the same electronic.., because couple of years ago, I bought 3 of SD10 series for its versatility , good to have in the house something that can run on all types of batteries ! Unfortunately, ALL 3 of them stopped working with type D batteries (1.5 volts) , during an outage...

One is no longer working on any type of batteries , Li-ion or alkaline , and two are working only with the provided bat. holder (4.5 V) , or with Li-ion !

I manage to open the dead one and inside seemed to be an dc-dc convertor and two drivers . I suspect that the dc-dc convertor is for powering the other 2 drivers from 1.5 volts (D cell). Testing it on the bench proved that the dc-dc convertor was no longer working , and the microprocesor for PWM and a capacitor were in short circuit.I can guess that this dc-dc convertor started to work to a higher voltage that leaded to the failure...

I do hope that what happen to mine was just bad luck.., time will tell !

I like Lumintop lights ( I do have 2 hunter T5 that works flawless...) , but SD10 was not the best of their product...

My one have both work well with D size battery.
One DOA but after repaired. Everything look fine.

Are you using Alkaline or NiMH?

OK this is weird. I can get a Tenergy Centura NiMH D to work, but a AA Eneloop in an Eneloop D spacer will not work, nor will either Energizer or Rayovac alkaline Ds. It couldn’t be battery length since the Tenergy cells are the shortest out of all four.
