Convoy BD06: Anybody?

Stumbled upon this BD06, I’m impressed with how thick the head wall is.
I’ll dig more information before purchasing one, which is very likely.

Better hurry and purchase it soon, based on what I’m seeing at Simon’s store the BD06 has been discontinued. I

It is a really nice light to give as present
The charging is excellent (4,21V for at least 100 cycles now)
Modes are simple so nice for non flashoholics
Solid construction
Good ano
Nice box
And fairly small being a 26650 light.

J-Dub74 - any progress on BD06 driver upgrade?

Has anyone posted pictures of the driver/switch/chrager setup in any of these side-switch bd models? They must have, but I can’t find one

JK, I think I did find a few pictures. Has anyone attempted a driver swap? is there room for stacking?

I have been wanting this light for modding, but have been holding back because I wouldn’t want to loose the charging circuit in favor of a new dd driver. So I’ve been working on an oshpark board that could fit into the driver cavity and hold the parts to a basic TP4056 charging circuit from eBay. I can transfer the parts over to the new board and connect to a dd driver.

Is there any interest in this idea? I’ve been thinking about starting a thread on the subject where smarter people than I could give their thoughts. Anyway…

I’m not sure about pictures but I sent my BD01 to a friend to check out and it came back with at least 10 7135s so there is some room at least but I don’t know exactly how much.

Not yet. It will happen but it’s going to take some time. Probably at least a month or more. I’ll post here if I have news. When it’s all done I may even do a new thread for it. Apparently this light has a few fans. Simon is currently sold out and waiting on another shipment. I tried seeing if we could work it out so this next batch might have a new UI but I don’t think that’s happening. There’s another firmware for Nanjg drivers that we’re testing but it may not work with the rechargeable lights. Until we test it we just don’t know. The BD series are Nanjg driver based and run off the Attiny 13a. I’m hoping Simon can test the new firmware in the BD series soon. If it works it will take less time to work it into the production models. If it doesn’t then we have to tune the existing driver UI which will take longer.

I’d love to see the disco modes go away. :sunglasses:

Glad to here this light hasn’t been discountinued and is just awaiting a new shipment

Thanks for the update J-Dub74. Waiting eagerly for any news

They are sometimes useful - like when using flashlight on a bike. Strobe light in well light city conditions is really more visible than even stronger constant one. Not to mention that to other traffic participants flashing light means bike so they have better chance to react accordingly. That’s why it’s better to have them hidden than to not have them at all. When they are hidden you don’t trigger them accidentally and don’t have to cycle through them every time and you still can use them when you need them.

Ordered a BD06. Thinking about adding a BD01 or X3. What are the 26650 battery size restrictions, if any. Will any of all take a protected 71mm size cell?

My longest 18650 Panasonic protected cells fit fine in BD01 and BD06.

X3 is a sweeeet light, but not great with the longest batteries.

Any updates? Still a work-in-progress?

Bump

@caleb - you mentioned wanting to get rid of disco modes - that can be done with a solder bridge over two legs of a chip that is easily accessed without having to remove the driver.

See this thread (post #31)

I did this on mine and like it a lot better after the change. It’s a really nice light, feels REALLY good in the hand, though a bit underwhelming in output, so I am looking into options for upping the output on mine. Has anyone swapped a different driver into this, or flashed new firmware to the existing driver, yet?

I might be willing to do some exploratory surgery on mine “for the greater benefit of the group…” if anyone has any suggestions about how I might go about with in the least destructive way

Thanks, raynman!

Been a long time since I visited this thread. I got a BD06 from Simon a week or so ago. I wanted to wait until I could get one with Biscotti…
I have to say it kinda blew me away. I really did not expect to like it so much. The one I received came with AR coated glass and an updated driver running Biscotti. Unlike the first clear C8 running Biscotti this BD06 driver has all the bugs worked out and is running a revised version of the firmware. The changes Toykeeper made were mostly for stability but she also swapped out the standard strobe for one I think she called a police strobe? Honestly it’s the only strobe I’ve ever seen that I think might actually be effective. Unlike the standard repeated blink this one has more rolling alternating stuttering light that really messes with your head. It’s wonderfully disturbing! :smiling_imp: I demonstrated it for my wife (not at her but at the ceiling) and she freaked out, shielded her eyes and yelled at me to turn it off!

Simon told me a while ago that all the BD series are now running Biscotti. He may still have old stock so if you’re ordering one I’d drop him a message with the order specifying that you want the new firmware. The BD06 was a gift for my boss so now I need to get one for myself. I kept it for several days trying out the different modes and whatnot and all seems to work perfectly now. ToyKeeper + Convoy = WOW! :money_mouth_face:

Nice the UI was the weak point of the BD series
