EAGLE EYE X2R XM-L2 Flashlight Torch USB charge 3modes 18650 battery flashlight

My X2R came today! Like most EagleEye products, this one is an incredible value. Beautiful EE ano, great knurling, threads, and whatever else. Besides that, the Convoy deep-carry clip fits great, and you can even sorta use the s2+ short tube with it. It also has a solid shelf under the LED like an A6, so that’s a perk for the single-emitter people (a triple will be a tough fit). The charger pulls up to 1amp.I’m testing it now to see what it terminates at.

The main negative i see is that the mode spacing isn’t great, but it’s a simple L-M-H.

I haven’t gotten the driver out yet, but it looks roomy in there.

Update: mine is charging to 4.21v consistently. I’m very happy with that

Thanks for the first impressions, sounds like a solid mod platform…

Looks like a winner for the price. Thanks for the comments and brief evaluation.

Among all the budget brands in the market, EE really deserve a lot of praise for their well made flashlights and their price is very reasonable imo. I really wish they could take a step further to surprise us with more powerful lights series soon.

I wish they released S2+ like light with side switch.

I’m even more excited now…. the driver and charger boards are completely independent, just held together by 3 pins, exactly like the X6R. The bottom board is the charger with USB port mounted on it, with the driver board stacked on top.

The charger board is 17.25mm (not counting the little centering tabs).
The driver board is 14.5mm.
The pill cavity is wide enough that you can probably fit between 15.25mm-15.5mm for the replacement driver.
The stack height stock is 7.75mm
The height room for the stack is 9.25mm (adjusted for the pcb sitting on the shelf)

Not a ton of room for the wires, will need smart placement.

Really nice 3.5mm tall (yes, tall) retaining ring with 3 full rows of smooth-turning threads.

It takes a 16mm mcpcb.

I’ll make my own thread when I can get a driver together… hopefully I can fit everything I want on 15mm. I should be able to since I can use both sides without a spring pad.

That is great news PD68! Now the wait for mine…

Thank again for the teardown! I will order one now…

There are 2 little FETs (are they fets?) on each output lead of the driver, what are they for?

And if I were to drop a 15mm FET+1 in there how would the 3 pins be wired?

The three pins are batt+, ground, and one connects to the mcu so it knows when power is connected.

We might need someone to add something to the firmware so that the light turns off when charging

Indicator or main LED?

Main led

Unlike X5R, mine turn off automatically.

Yes, I’m saying if/when I do a driver change, we’ll need somehow to retain that functionality

Oh I see, forgot that the tail switch has to be ON for it to charge, I guess probably putting it in moonlight shouldn’t impact the charge rate much.

Alright, I’m about ready to place the first order as long as nobody finds any errors. It’s wired mostly the same as a TripleDown so it will work with the same firmware as the other TripleDown and Texas Avenger boards. The only differences are the addition of R3, which DEL found to greatly help stability, and the smaller LFPAK33 FET. The third pin on the X2R isn’t needed so I omitted it to save space. I am relying on the 2 other pins to carry all of the Batt+ and GND current, which is not ideal but I think will be fine for single emitters. I couldn’t see any way to fit bypass holes. The large exposed pad on the bottom is directly above where the micro-usb port is on the charger; the thought is that we might get a bit lower resistance by using that as an extra ground point.

I highly recommend ordering with the 0.8mm thickness option.

Got mine in today (paid for it myself, not a sample), very impressed for the price. The charging works great, about .8A charging rate on my measurements. The fit and finish are impeccable, the usual for Eagle Eye.

The modes are good and usable modes, the medium could be a touch lower just for a more visible change, but it is the equivalent of a 2x7135 driver and plenty bright for most tasks. The low is a good level for a low, not too dim, not to bright. High is about all I would want on a light like this for new users of LiIon. The light gets hot, but not scorching on high and left to tail-stand or lie sideways on a surface.

The 3C should be the stock light tint for Eagle Eye, in my humble opinion. It works and is bright yet not glaring. The convoy deep carry clip works fine on this light, and it carries easily.

I love the no blinky modes, a hidden strobe is OK, but I cannot recall a time I actually used a blinky mode except on accident. The low will run over 32 hours on a 3000mah 18650, and medium just over 4 hours, high reaches almost 2 hours. Good all around performance from a solid EDC light.

A bit lower medium (500ma or so), an extra USB charging port cover and that is all I can think of for tweaks on this current light. A moon mode would be a nice addition if the driver is redone, making the light four modes. The 550 lumen rating does not sound like much on paper with all the recent lights, but it is plenty bright for 90% of the needs out there.

Amazing light for the money, I heartily recommend it for a first time 18650 light. A great travel light as well, eliminates the need for a charger.

Great Job Eagle Eye, keep up the good work with the new 26650 light coming out this month!

Got my 2 X2Rs today from gearbest one color each, surprisingly fast I must say! The quality of this light is very impressive, i wasn’t expecting this when I first saw the pictures and certainly not at this price. I would say the X2R is definitely the best budget light of 2016.

What I liked about the X2R:
-No sharp corner or edges
-Very smooth twisting action, it gives that satisfying light grinding noise just like the X6.
-Front spring is very stiff much like a Qlite, both springs are shiny with come sort of gold coating.
-Both retaining rings are very well machined and the front ring is 5mm tall, never seen that before.
-Flawless anodizing and laser etching.
-USB connector is perfectly centered and the rubber seal has perfect fit.

Now I need to get some XP to 7mm centering ring and mod this with a XP-L HI and 15mm FET+1. Due to pill-less design a triple conversion can be tricky, it relies on the correct stacking height of the inner wall and reflector to provide water seal.

If you’re reading this and still don’t have a X2R, what are you waiting for?!

I got an X2R. Very happy with it as is for it’s designed purpose. One of the few I may not mod.
Also got it pretty fast from GB. About a week faster than BG”s average. I got the Titanium Grey in 3C tint.

I find it hard to believe the promo has been slow to sell out. But it is down to 9pcs left for $14.69 in Grey 3C.

I like the knurling better than my S series similar lights as its slightly more grippy. But the finish on the S series seems better, appears thicker and more uniform coloring. Maybe the S series just had a smoother finish before anodizing.
And the Rubber cap for the micro USB charge port fits Very well.

Yep, best value in flashlights right now. Add a protected cell and you have a total package for ~$20 shipped

I received my Titanium Grey X2R from GB today. The protected NCR18650B battery from GB fits without a problem, everything looks fine from the outside.

But there is a problem. My X2R only has 2 working brightness modes. When I cycle them there is a change in brightness from low to mid, but no difference from mid to high. The brightness stays the same. 2 Users from the german “taschenlampen-forum” reported the same problem.

Here is a image I just made for Gearbest to illustrate the problem.
