So my friend wants a plug in 12v spotlight for pig hunting...

annnnnnnnnnnd I know nothing about them.

Which brings me to you guys, he has a budget of about $150USD, so I’m just looking for recommendations. He needs a good mixture of flood and throw, and obviously powered by a car / truck’s 12v plug.

What’s half decent and worth a look into?

The Lightforce 240 Blitz is big but lightweight and so not tiring to use, the lens doesn’t get hot (so you won’t burn your seat if you put it down in a hurry…) and they are durable. These are a halogen unit and you can get coloured filters. Most gun shops sell them.

Powa Beam are pretty nice, but somewhat more expensive. They do throw a nice spot.

You will see both brands in use by pro shooters, which should tell you something.

Some guys are using generic HID lights but I’ve no experience with them.

I don’t know about ready made 12V pig lights either, but it sounds like it could be a fun mod project. One could take a suitable host and a suitable buck driver (like the ones from MTN electronics) and just have the power come from the car’s 12V system instead of a battery.

Maybe there are great ready-made options though.

Weird friend!

Honestly an HID spotlight of some sort sounds like what you are looking for. That way you don’t have the heat to worry about plus they are still hard to beat in a situation like this with LED’s.

Some quick googling showed there are a few ready made options out there.

Thanks for the suggestions, I’m looking at recommendations and doing some research.

Great idea!

might work for op, but personally, i dont think id like the warm up time on hid spotlights. im constantly on and off sotlights as we go from field to field.

my experience with hid is minimal. had one on my quad

I have an old Coleman 12v spotlight that supposedly put out 800,000 candle power. It’s insanely bright. Funny, I’ve been looking around for a drop-in LED bulb for it, just for giggles. Perhaps something like that might suit your friend’s needs?

Looks like FlashPilot modded one here: 8000 lumen 100 watt HID handheld spotlight conversion.

That’s the exact one that I’ve had all these years.

I have one of these 240mm 150w HID lights. Haven't measured throw, but can say it clearly is the best thrower I have. Very usable spill. Really a great beam and the best handheld HID beam I have ever personally seen. Very light and well balanced. Blows my 55w HID converted Thor Colossus out of the water in every respect except no on board power. Plan is to add a 4S 18650 power pack.

Pretty sure your friend will be very happy. I don't know anything about the vendor I linked in the picture.

That looks very similar to the Coleman 800k candlepower searchlight I posted above. The thing’s a freaking light saber. Very useful for lighting up clouds, passing UFOs, signalling astronauts on the ISS….

Wow nice, thanks, I’ll pass this suggestion along to him, looks like a beast

Wellcome to my world m8

I am using this one, custom modded XHP35( NOT HI, yet the reflector is 100mm, 2500lm, like 240 000 candelas) with other words, an ocean or light, especialy designed for jackal/foc/wild dogs/ and other staff of that ilk hunting
I tried dded xhp35 inside yet the beam becomes quite narrow and the candelas bumped up to 580 000

If you were close i would craft one for a fella hunter in Aus….damn you have millions of hogs in there!

Dont use HID lights, they have warm up time, and aint suitable for push/shoot situatuons, plus the HID emits tons of UV, thus scaring most of the wild life : they could be daltonists yet they can clearly see the UV, the UV they afraid most- thats the main reason when there is a full moon there is also noone on the field

Avoil while lights and HIDs at any cost

About its price: with the body and the parts for the mod it costs like……well, prolly 90-100 USD and some crafting time

I like it! with some serious modifications and 6 26650 batteries I’ll be able to sent signals to the International Space Station when it passes over head :open_mouth: Sorry… Sorry. I can’t help looking at things and wonder, how can I tear that apart to make something else
