Been on CPF since 2003 as user richpalm. Got addicted to lights in 2003 and was around during the infancy stage of LED's when the 1W luxeon was really hot. :p Went the whole custom and Surefire route, lost interest for awhile and all of a sudden the bug bit again hard this past fall when the time changed. So I sold off most incans after I read up on all the newer LED's. (I have poor dim/night vision so old LED's just didn't work for me)
Wound up on permanent disability in 2005-invisible medical issues-so expensive light days are over, and the overpriced custom jobs just don't have any attraction for me anyway, not since Solarforce came on the scene! Lego is fun. The quality of the Solarforce hosts is great!
I do some mods and I'm pretty good at it, got mil-spec certified at one time with wiring so that's not a problem... lack of machine shop access is. So I do everything that I can with hand tools using existing hosts without making a hack job out of it. Into experimentiing with P60 dropins right now.
I love CPF-got my whole flashlight education from there-I check it multiple times daily-but it's gotten huge and it seems now to me that it's geared to high $$$$. I'm delighted to find this forum and it looks like it will be a good match!
Really good to have you here. Looking back, if I could take all of the money I have spent on budget lights, I could get 3 or 4 really nice lights. But it has been fun learning about all of the different options in budget lights and playing around with different types of lights without going broke.
I agree with you about CPF. I have no hard feelings and still read and post there, but the big size brings a lot of challenges and the admins and users have a definite bias against anything economical. I like having stuff I can get into and upgrade or change around.
Glad you could join us. I hope you enjoy the atmosphere and company here. You'll find a refreshing absence of over-bearing moderators and snobish elitism...
I look forward to hearing about your modding experience. I find it fun as hell... Kinda like the Lego's I had as a kid, only brighter :)
I didn't wanna say it outright but... you're right! Getting moderation-crazy and I never had the college ed and good job to be one of the elite... wouldn't wanna be either! Not like the good old days...
Although I'm one of the newest here, I loved this community at the first sight. It's great to have people with knowledge and experience in the forum. Welcome to BLF.
__ PS:
I checked the "brand guns" on the Brand/Budget poll but after the little time past here, I definitely think a quality budget would give me the most joy. I'm also registered in CPF, but "budget" is a "boo!!" word there :)
I have quite a lot of (nearly all) budget lights. While they have their drawbacks, they are a lot more fun than the expensive stuff.
Yes, there are sometimes problems but they are mostly fixable with not much more than a file and a soldering iron. And then there is the gratification of having got it the way you want it.
Welcome! Yep, i agree. It's totally possible to get what you need in budget segment with little or no modifications for a fraction of the cost of a well estabilished brand name.
The father of my girlfriend also reads a lot on CPF, but to me it's also a little to "big"...
especially when your almost completely new to the hobbie like i am
Also i'm not in the position to spend a lot of cash on these things (her father has a olight and such where i have a romisen and a MTE ssc p7 ) since i'm still a student; so this forum is more my kind of thing i guess.
But i actually don't care because like Don says cheaper light are a lot more "fun" to me then expensive ones! You can actually play around and mess then up a little without feeling guilty
Altough i'm not yet at the stage of modding then myself i would really want to go there so if anyone knows some good fundamentals about modding or some links to then i would be very gratefull!!
Right now i'm eagerly awaiting my newly ordered KD XML T6!
(PS a nood question: what and where do you guys buy a lubricant for the screw system?)
or engine oil dispensed from a syringe. It is easy to control the quantity with a syringe and a filling cannula. Or a dropper bottle with a blunt needle like this one from DX
I tend to give the threads a heavy coat of grease then wipe it all off which helps with cleaning the threads, then apply a small amount of grease or oil.
Yep! To put it bluntly, you've gotta be a FRG (F***in' rich guy) to fit in there. I've said it now, LOL! I'll probably get tossed there 'cause my politically incorrect comments are starting to leak out.
Been banned there. This is not difficult to achieve. Or even worth mentioning.
It's a sort of sign of seeing the light when that happens.
Can't say it matters - there are plenty of places with more open policies, and nicer people.
This place is where I choose to spend my time as it is more interesting and the folks around here are a lot nicer.
And I'm glad to see that my percentage of the total posts is dropping. And it's not because I'm posting any less than usual, but because Mr. Admin has got it right here and lots of people agree.
Welcome from me as well, Rich! I think you'll fit right in here. We'll give you the details about the initiation ceremony later and your personal parking permit should be in the mail. Now, onto the most important part: the secret handshake... ;) No, seriously, it's good to have you here. :)
