Best D battery powered Ghettoblaster / subwoofer / portable speakers?

Uh... this is something very weird but I'm stuck on my research so maybe somebody can point me the way.

I have nearly too many D batteries (10.000mAh Tenergys) and at the same time I'd like to get some portable BASS HEAVY speaker system or something like a modern version of a Ghettoblaster but I can't find too much out there. Or to be exact I couldn't find anything at all that is more modern then the classy old Ghettoblasters.

Where and how do I look for such a thing? Google and Amazon don't spit out anything useful at all.

My desired specs are:

has to run on D batteries or 18650s but I prefer Ds (8x D would be optimal)

good overall music quality

HEAVY bass output

should be 1 piece (max 2, not like 1x subwoofer and 9 single tiny speakers, I don't care about surround)

portable by hand (with integrated handle for example), can be heavy as hell, I don't care

budget 300$

integrated CD reader would be nice

otherwise has to have line-in or USB plug, I want to use it (if not from from the CD itself with Mp3 player)

NO iPod dock, cannot be specialized on Apple products, I hate them and I adore my Cowon Mp3 player

playtime should be at least 1h at medium volume setting but I'm not worried about that anyway with 16x D Tenergys....

Any help would be appreciated, I'm really stuck here since I'm not an expert with such devices. I want to use the thing in the garden only.

Wow, its been a loong time since i heard the word "ghettoblaster"! Remember when they used to have dedicated aisles for such at bestbuy, circuitcity or federated?

Now theres only bestbuy and those aisles are replaced with ipod docks.

Good luck and do let us know if you find any. (i want one!)

Although it has a iPod dock, you may want to check if a external mp3 player can be jacked in.

It pretty much fits the bill on everything else on your wish list

I will probably end up with this JVC, it looks good from reviews.

Best price I could find was 234 bucks at

Everything similar seems to break very fast or have some flaws. Only "problem" with the JVC is that it takes more Ds then expected but as long as the sound quality is good I don't mind.

Additionally what I found is something very interesting, an audiophile boombox:

800 bucks are not budgetfriendly but I think it would be a good investment one day!

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP GUYS! So far I'm very happy with the find but will not order immediately!

I have the Thodio iBox XC.

It truly is audiophile sound.

I don't think there's anything out there that compares.

Note: For those of you wondering, yes, I did a side by side with my friend's Bose Acoustic Wave II.

He should be ordering his iBox shortly after he finds a buyer for his Bose.

LOL, I've got something like that in my bathroom. Had it since the early '90s. Handle and all, "detachable" speakers, no CD player but CD (RCA) input. Dual cassette! Bigger than it really needed to be. Got a lot of use out of it. Still use it occasionally, but the power button connection is a little flaky, need to hit it pretty hard, probably corrosion. I think it takes D's.

You might try yard sales, craigslist, or Ebay?

I still have one of the original JVC's. Definitely loud, definitely a lot of bass. Still works great. probably over 15 years old.

@makapuu: Wow, didn't expect it to be that great, but everybody is talking about it....

Check out the TDK Cube.

I have one… love it! You can find it on Amazon for about $230

If you’re looking for something durable, you could check with Home Depot or any local tool store. They often have ruggidized radios for work sites.

Im glad i never sold my Ol Skool Ghetto Blasters!!! If your looking for something
with Bass and that can swallow D’s all night long then only 1 box, Lasonic. They have a
an old school version out that makes a good effort at replicating the ghetto blaster if i may. But
its not. Real block busters where all modified in some fashion, typically the neighborhood electronics
guru. Especially if they did time, all the best had obtained their skills locked up.

Lasonic is a good choice. Although im defiantly getting a TDK when the price drops since i have a
few vintage blasters already. Good luck
