Should this forum (introduce yourself) be compulsory?

OK let me explain, I see loads of normal threads being hijacked half way through by welcome posts. I know it’s nice to welcome people but when subscribed its dead annoying to click on new post to just see ‘welcome Dave’ or whoever it happens to be.
I’m guessing it will be mainly unpopular but thought I’d ask anyway :~

So all I’m suggesting is that first post can only be made in introduce yourself, hopefully not too much like a draconian CPF that everybody hates tho

I thought it was compulsory...

to greet every new member. ;)

I know mate, it’s nice to welcome and your posts are usually funny but maybe they should just be in that forum?

I think you’ll find that some potential new members might end up not participating if they are forced to formally introduce themselves first.

That is a possible outcome, I’m just suggesting, ‘hi from Timbuktu’ etc, no full on introductions unless they actually want them, it’s not a AA meeting

I like it the way it is now.

I think fishinfool has only greeted one person in the last ten days.

Many are more comfortable introducing themselves in the middle of a thread as opposed to starting a new one where the spotlight is completely on them. Some people are shy (even behind a screen). I have seen people chastised at the other place for for introducing them self in the wrong forum. some will join in a thread in progress, but would not dare start one (even to introduce them self).

Leave it the way it is. If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. There is always going to be something that bugs someone, making a rule about every little thing will eventually bug EVERYONE. Until something becomes a real problem, I say just leave it alone.

The first post for many lurkers is in the middle of a thread when the urge and the subject strikes them. Personally, I like the friendly interruptions. One of the things that gives BLF that hometown feel.

But good discussion point, Jeansy - thanks for asking.

Some people welcome without thought when a new member is found. When I joined, yes as a newby it felt great and everything that has happened since then has happened from the initial welcome. Yes I agree that sometimes it is irritating that you open a thread that you are interested in and it is someone welcoming someone else without reference to the thread topic. But hey, we need new members and what better way than getting new members is a warm welcome. Who knows ,they may help you one day.

Special message for Jeansy, cainn24, _the_, fishinfool, budynabuick, Speedsix, BetweenRides, and MRsDNF:

Welcome to BLF! 0:)

One of the many things that make this site preferable over that other website is the absence of a genuine control freak at the helm. Enough with the rules already!

LOL! I get it.

Thanks RC, I’m just upset you never gave me a funny pic when I joined really

Sure make this forum into CPF now, no off-topic or you get banned, all users must introduce themselves or their account gets deactivated, not able to edit or delete posts…sounds good to me.

Yep! And NO sarcasm, either!
