Maglite Expert Needed

I recently came across a 2d maglite that from the outside looks perfectly normal but when I started to disassemble it, it got weirder and weirder.

The Differences

First of all, instead of saying "Made in the USA" it says "Patented in USA".

It also has a different type of spring that appears to be made out of some kind of brass instead of the normal shiny chrome spring.

It also a spring in the front where the positive end of the batteries goes.

The tailcap is not one curved piece that bottoms out. It looks as if it was a normal tailcap that someone filed the end flatter on.

Sorry, no picture of this.

So does anyone know is this a fake maglite or a really old one/different model?

Maybe when you add the photos……

Might not be a Maglite. Does it have the Maglite serial number on the barrel? There was another maker long ago, of flashlights that looked just like Maglites. I can’t remember the name though, but they were made in the US also.

Yes, it is definitely a maglite or a maglite fake. (Your thinking of Kel-Lite) The serial number is "D2028501876" and on the bezel it says "MAG-LITE MAG INSTRUMENTS-ONTARIO, CALIFORNIA, USA"

I have an older 2D-ROP-HI and a 3D-1185 and they both have springs at +B and “PATENTED IN USA”. I dont know just how old these lights are, but the hosts were bought used and I think are at least 6-7 years old. They are from an era that pre-dates the quad-die emitters, so if you wanted more than ~250 Lumens AND some degree of throw INCAN was the only way.

Do the negative springs look like mine?

Have one just like it in my left hand. Do you have an extra bulb in the foam under the spring?

No its shiny silver, not that gold color. Although its been heavily modded so its likely my spring is not the OEM. I dont remember what the OEM spring looked like. There was a time a few years ago, when myself and 2-3 other CPF’ers were swapping back and forth various parts from at least 6-7 different mags.

Yes, I have the original incan one in the tailcap and some form of LED drop-in in the light.

Very interesting !
I have two that have been purchased in the last year.
Blue , purchased at Christmas
Silver, purchased in March or April (can’t remember for sure )
The silver one has the patented in USA markings. The Blue one does not.
Neither have the tailcap or switch spring like Scaru’s

Could that spring setup be from a Mag Charger ?

Going to Lowe’s this weekend , will see what I can find

No it definitely came this way stock. The person who gave it to me is not the type that would own more than one flashlight.

Edit: This is the LED bulb.

HA! I never did get to see the photos. I left work before you had them up and of course, I can’t see them at work. Sounds like you got it solved.

What you have appears to be a original Maglite led with the 1 watt bulb.

With D in serial number

Here’s a link to the 3 watt bulb

Here’s your tail spring…
