How good are bear grylls knifes?

I want to but the following knifes

Bear Grylls Scout Clip Folder $8

Bear Grylls Compact Fixed Blade $21

Bear Grylls Scout Compact I can get 5 for $20

I want to know the quality compared to Elan and SRM etc

Complete crap. I had the fixed blade and the multitool and both were horrible.

For a good review of the compact fixed blade see here - http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?142960-Bear-Grylls-Compact-Fixed-Blade-Small-Review&highlight=Bear+Grylls

How much bear would Bear Grylls grill if Bear Grylls would grill bear ?

I don’t have any of these blades.

I do have several Gerber bladess, though. I would say better than Smith & Wesson, equivalent of Cold Steel. Acceptable steel quality and lightweight handles.

I lost a Gerber 31-000750 Bear Grylls Compact Multi-Tool in my front flower bed (obviously, now found when working on the yard). Six months in the cold, rain and heat of Georgia did nothing to it. I washed it off, scrubbed with a toothbrush, and re-lubricated. It’s back on my keychain none the worse for wear. I would buy another one.

That’s quite a discount on the Scout Compact. Are you sure they are genuine product?

Is that really the stuff he is using in the series? They dont get that good reviews..

The prices you listed are doubtless for Chinese copies, not the real deal.

Gerber has headed downmarket since moving the lion’s share of their production overseas, and even the USA-made blades are not as well-made as they once were, IMO.

Looks exactly the same as the ones in the U.K site. Do not forget that Knives are easy and cheap to make and are over price in the west.

One word, MORA. Nobody will say anything against a Mora. They are cheap, have great steel, both in carbon and stainless. And they are super cheap. I got my topq allround stainless for $12 with $5 dollar shipping on amazon. Mora uses 12c27 sandvik steel in their stainless versions of knives. It’s actually a category of shaving steel, so it sharpens up easy, has a nice Rockwell (58ish), and stays sharp A LONG TIME. The carbon steels are nice, sharpen up only a tiny bit easier, but I just hate the smell they develop. I mean, it smells like threads of a light after you put on silicon grease after several weeks of use X5. Most moras don’t have a full tang, they have a rat tang, but it doesnt matter, they are still strong. Theres a video of a guy taking one, sticking it in in a tree with half the blade horizontaly, then standing on the handle, with all his weight and bouncing, the knife just bends a little, and he just bends it back on a stump or something. They are made in sweden btw, so you knows it’s gonna be good! Last time I checked, all the reviews of it on amazon have at least 10 reviews, with the average being like 4.5-5 stars, the popular ones have like 30 reviews with 5 stars.

Good quality control too, never heard a report of a bad knife from them.

Oh, and that bear grylls knife, like scaru said, it’s overpriced crap! Moras come with a plastic sheath that the edge of the handle flexes past and then goes back. I can hold the sheath upside down and shake it up and down violently and the knife doesnt even budge. It has a clip, like a pocket clip, fits well in your pocket or just on a belt, no looping required.

And by stays sharp long, I do meant it. Way longer than 8cr13mov, which is used in alot of budget folders, such as kershaws. I’ve cuts 10+ sheets of paper, then a bunch of pineapples, watermelon and stripping several walking sticks, still shaves…and cuts paper like butta

cheap enough to have a few and good quality steel used em for years as general purpose camp knives and for that use they always hold up well

I heard in sweden people buy them by the bucket :). I mean, if the 511 is only like $8 in the united states after all the shipping and customs, it’s gotta be like 3 bucks there. And that they just are meant to be a throwaway knife, that people abuse the crap out of them, just pull out another!

Youre right, they are cheap and you can really abuse them. I have around 5 of them lying around in my garage.

The $8 one is good value for $8

@ How2 - I justed seed you are in London? Do you know the Bushcraft store in Enfield? If you can pop up there and have a chat with the lads there, you can even handle a few knives before you buy.

If You want a good fixed blade, with Mora You can’t go wrong.
Not only on this price range, Mora is hard to beat even with a much more expensive knife, even if multiple prices comes to compare.

They don’t look fancy, they come with ugly plastic sheath.
I can’t remember any more negative comments about Moras that are true.
But, IMO, knife is a tool, so - who cares about “fanciness” if a good tool is needed?!
Sheaths… they aren’t nice, I’m not a fan either… but they do what sheath should do - protect the knife and the owner; anyway - it’s a good start… and if You want, it is easy to make or buy a nice one.

Good blade size for most tasks (most of models is about 10cm/4” blade => easy to control), easy to keep sharp (scandi grind + good steel in both carbon or stainless variants), nice shape of blade - very useful, lightweight, durable.

Camping, hunting, fishing, cooking, carving, gardening… You name it, there is no role Mora can’t perform… and they really perform good.

Also, if You need an ax, for example - go and buy one and add to Your pack. You can use a Mora for batoning too, especially in an emergency, it will persist, but this is in a first line a knife, fine cutting tool, reliable friend, right hand - not a pry bar, an ax, a machete, or… You name it.

To sum up all above in one sentence - I seriously doubt there is a better way to spend a few dollars, and get so much value for Your money.

I ordered there, and had no problems at all, decent prices and very good service.
For other countries, I’m not sure, check shipping costs.

LOL, they came from factory in buckets, not in carton boxes; if i understood correctly, that bucket is - a package…

… when I was in Sweden a few years ago, price was about 50-60 SEK (Sweden krunas) for the cheapest one (IIRC model 511 at that moment), in a regular store, I paid about 90 SEK for a Clipper; there wasn’t a problem to find a few basic models in almost any supermarket… nice country, BTW…

Bear Grylls knives are standard Gerber stuff with his name slapped on.

I bought the scout knife (first link) from walmart for $20. It’s a nice knife, thin and light weight and the rubber/plastic handle is very grippy. The clip is also nice for a budget knife.

IMHO the gerber survival knifes just try to be too many things for the price and size of the knife.

Where are you getting the fixed blade for $21?
