led drop in for very old flashlight?

I have an old flashlight like this one but it uses 2d batteries instead of c.

I would like to switch out the bulb in it for an led. There seems to be plenty of space for a drop in to fit but before I try this I thought i'd ask for advice.

I was looking at something like this. Would it work? Is there anything I need to know?

I also cracked the lens on the light and was wondering if there would be anyway to replace it with one that would fit?

Thanks.

Hi Jumico

You may want to try this Has a R2 drop-in and if it does not fit your light. You have not wasted a drop-in. The spring of the drop-in has to push against something. Can you put some internal pics of your light?

If it is as you had described, Id post it on ebay in the antiques section to see how much money Id get for it.

You could look at the maglite led upgrades they sort of regulate themselves for heat. They are sort of standard bulb size.

I think though you may be better off selling it and buying another modern light. But if you are going to stick with it make as few changes to the light as possible to maintain the value.

This. Terralux and Nite-ize both have standard bulb style led replacements that will give you more light/runtime without destroying a collectible, and it's as simple as a bulb swap.

Thanks for all the advise. I may be able to post some internal pictures later today. I was thinking about selling it on eBay but a search for "franco flashlight" only showed one light. I might try to put it up for a while to see if I can sell it otherwise i'll keep it. Also the fact that I accidentally dropped the lens and cracked it may lower its value.

Aloha and welcome to BLF jumico! That old flashlight of yours looks great. Maybe when you're all done you could post some pictures. We all love a good set of pictures around here.

They sell for very little on eBay (UK) around £5-£10 and that's for ones with intact lenses.

Thanks for the info pook. I was thinking I wouldn't make too much if i sold it and it might be cool to modify an old light.

Basically the bulb on this flashlight fits into the top of the body of the flashlight where it connects with a metal piece on the side and the bottom of the bulb connects with the top of the batteries. I like how2's idea about buying a light with a drop in bulb and seeing if it will fit. The bulb is just over an inch and a half in width and just over an inch in height so the original bulb i linked to wouldn't fit very well. Looks like most drop-ins have a 26.55mm diameter.

It turns out that the bulb unscrews from the reflector so I can probably slip a new bulb from Terralux or Nite-ize like match said. Something like this. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GL5C2E/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&s=hi&psc=1 When I find my big mag lite I'll test it out.
