[17-SEP-2012] "My Watched Posts" decommissioned, replaced by "My Subscriptions"

Update: 17-SEP-2012

The old "Watcher" system is now disabled.

Hi everyone,

Now that the new e-mail notification system is in place, the old "Watcher" system for threads is redundant. The old system is what creates the link below the text of the first post that says: "You are not watching this post, click to start watching". Likewise, the old system maintained a list of all the threads that you marked to watch, visible at the link "My Watched Posts" in the menu for your user account at the bottom left-hand column of BLF.

The entire "My Watched Posts" system will be disabled on Monday, 17 September 2012.

Now Disabled

Therefore, if you are currently using the list of "My Watched Posts", please go through the list and and open the threads and mark the ones you still want to follow with the new "Click to Subscribe" link in the bottom right-hand corner of the first post in the thread.

From now on, you can see the list of all the threads you are following at this link:

http://budgetlightforum.com/my-subscriptions
(Fixed now, sorry!)

Likewise, in the "My Subscriptions" page, you can un-subscribe from the threads you no longer want to follow, and you can see which ones have new comments since the last time you visited them. Even if you have chosen the user setting option to disable receiving e-mail notifications, you can still subscribe to any thread and use the "My Subscriptions" page to get a quick overview of the status of the threads you are currently following.

I hope this new system makes it easier and simpler for everyone at BLF. As for me, it's a much more simple, clean, and understandable system for me to maintain. Please feel free to comment here with your experiences and suggestions with the new "My Subscriptions" system.

Thanks, have fun!

Thanks for the continuing updates/upgrades to the forum.

We appreciate your hard work !!!

Great idea, no need for redundancy. I have grown to love the “My Watched Posts” section, it’s quite handy.

Today I set all of my watched posts to “subscribed” as you mentioned, but when I click the link to “My Subscriptions”, I get this error:

There was a problem with your form submission. Please wait 5 seconds and try again.

And I see no subscribed posts.

FYI I have all email notifications set to off… if that helps.

Oh, and yes, I’ve waited 5 seconds, like 20 times, and it still doesn’t work.

Hopefully this issue is fully resolved before you push the button on the “My Watched Posts” section.

Thanks!!!

I am getting the same behavior. I’ve responded to a couple threads and gone into one of my “Watched Posts” threads and subscribed to it. I’ve waited 5 seconds and retried, to no avail. My Subscribed Posts list remains empty.

This was happening to me ! I found all the emails in my spam folder on GmaiL ……

Me too...

“My Subscriptions”, I get this error:

There was a problem with your form submission. Please wait 5 seconds and try again.

+1 FWIW, same message here...

+1. Just in case you thought all the other guys were fibbing.

Oooooops, thanks guys for reporting this. It’s fixed now, sorry for the dumb mistake on my part.

As for the notification e-mails in the Gmail spam folder, please make sure to mark them as “Not Spam” so the Gmail anti-spam engine learns the pattern.

Awesome, working now! Thx SB!!

Note to self: Always test new stuff first with a “regular” user account and not with the site owner account. :zipper_mouth_face:

i like the watched posts system, any chance you can keep it for those of us who find it more efficient?

Hi Bort, could you please explain what features you feel are superior in the Watcher system? I might be able to duplicate some of them in the new system. Thanks!

I prefer the new system, with fewer notifications.

But this:

"Therefore, if you are currently using the list of "My Watched Posts", please go through the list and and open the threads and mark the ones you still want to follow with the new "Click to Subscribe" link in the bottom right-hand corner of the first post in the thread"

Is a problem. I do not have time to go into more than 200 threads and click "subscribe" and when the "Watched post" page is removed I have no way to see if I am missing a question.

Hey admin, i really appreciate you asking

I like the fact all my watched posts are on one page, and i can click on “X new” on any page i want to visit, and ignore the ones i am not interested in but are still on the page if i decide to check them out later instead of having lots of e-mails cluttering my inbox (especially the give away ones).

Also i can see how many replies there are, and how many threads have new posts so i can decide if i will go through them now or do it later when i have more time, especially if a thread has 50 replies and i’m going out in a few mins.

The posts are in order of what was most recently updated, i’m a bit OCD in that sense but it gives me more of a sense of continuity. It also seems to be quicker, it can take a little bit before i get the e-mail, and i see the reply on recent posts and view it before i get the e-mail, then i have to go and delete it, sometimes i click on it when it arrives thinking its a new reply, but i already read it (the watched posts updates instantly and self deletes the “x new” once i read the thread.)

Also i don’t have to delete a few dozen more e-mails a day, i get a lot of messages daily from coworkers, industry journals, e-mail alerts, sales etc, so having everything on one page i can visit at my leisure and is self updating is extremely convenient and less intrusive.

Thanks for the fix! I like the new approach.

Sure, let’s see how the new My Subscriptions page compares, point by point:

Currently implemented at My Subscriptions

I can easily add another column for the total number of replies, I’ll add it within the next couple days.

The “x new” is already implemented, and it will also disappear after you read the thread.
As for the order of the items, I just set it to your preferences, I imagine it will probably be the most popular. But you can always click on the column headers to sort by other columns as well.

You can click the checkbox to disable receiving notification e-mails in your user settings, and then continue to use the “Subscribe” button with the My Subscriptions page.

Hope this helps! Sound workable for you?

My apologies, for some reason i thought you meant only the e-mail system would be left functioning, the subscriptions page is fine by me and i apologize for the long winded rebuttal
Boy do i have egg on my face

Not at all, I appreciate you explaining how you used the old Watcher system, that helps me improve the new system. No harm done whatsoever.
