FS: Vintage Ray-O-Vac XM-L U2 Mod (1000 Lumen)

These are nice vintage chrome hosts for an XM-L U2 1000 lumen mod…

—- Retro / High Tech —-

Ray-O-Vac made this 2D ‘Sportsman’ model in 1965.

I have several of these in mint condition with box.

If you want a $20 dollar discount, I have several used hosts in good condition. (some signs of wear, but in good condition)

In this modification, I am gluing a ‘plug’ inside the host, and using a single 32650 Li-Ion supply. (I have fiberglass sleeves for a 26650 as well - $5)

Features of the build:

  • XM-L U2 emitter (1D tint)
  • Multi mode 3 Amp driver with memory
  • Sized for a single 32650 Li-Ion supply
  • Multi-Layer Coated HD Glass Lens with custom sized silicone o-ring (or glow ring option available)
  • Aluminum reflector (choose smooth or MOP - see below)
  • Glow ring option

Notes:

  • This is a ‘fixed focus’ design. I will have it adjusted to best spot. It has a nice bright spill area. ‘Best spot’ focus is the preferred set up…
  • This driver uses 380mA AMC7135 chips to reach 3 Amps. It has many modes that can be configured. I personally like the 2 mode set up. (medium and high)
  • I have Feilong 6000mAh 32650’s here! (the best IMO - over 2 hours run time on high, and over 6 hours on medium - medium is still very bright, about 320 lumens!)

Please see here for some feedback from buyers of my other builds to show that I am a trusted seller

The pictures show the details of the build…

The glow ring is custom made by Fiddy…

Current readings (2 mode configuration): (High, medium)

Measured at the emitter:

  • High - 3020mA’s
  • Medium - 890mA’s

Measured at the tail: (battery current draw from a single, 6000mAh 32650 Li-Ion)

  • High - 3020mA’s… Estimated run time - 2 hours!
  • Medium - 890mA’s… Estimated run time - Over 6 hours at about 320 lumens! 8)

Pricing:

This build could be cheaper but I’m using the best parts I could find since it’s such a great vintage host!

The complete build will include:

  • Heatsink/driver/XM-L U2 emitter installed and tested (let me know desired mode configuration for the driver)
  • Aluminum reflector (specify smooth or MOP)
  • Multi-Layer Coated HD Glass Lens with custom sized silicone o-ring
  • Assembled and ready for your battery

$199

Options:

  • Custom glow ring - $15

Jayrob, welcome to the BLF family!! I've been following your projects on LPF for a long while. You build pretty amazing stuff and never fail to innovate and please.

If anyone questions whether it's safe to buy from him, he has an impeccable reputation on LPF and is the goto guy for the best stuff. ;)

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome!

Yes I put a link to my kits and stuff in my signature… 8)

Welcome to BLF jayrob

Some pretty sweet stuff you've been up to that is for sure. And finally a source for a 32600 battery with a capacity that makes some sense. Great to have you here and I do hope you have fun here, I know I do ;-)

Yes the Feilong cells are top notch!

6000mAh’s capacity and can handle a ton of current…

They were tested even at 13 Amps here:
Feilong cells tested

They are 32650’s. So a tad longer than a 32600, but can still fit a 2D Mag with no modification except to just shorten the tail cap spring a little…

It’s also very nice that apparently ya didn’t alter the original by going with glued-in plug so it could conceivably be reversed to how it came from the factory. Ya don’t wanna essentially destroy a classic like that by messing ’round with the metal.

Great stuff.

Honestly I did glue the plug inside. So it is not able to go back to the original unfortunately…

I know what you mean, but it’s just that when I put normal batteries in one before it is modified, it is not appealing at all. It would only be for the shelf, and not for use. (not for my use anyway)

But after the mod, it can still be a shelf queen if you just want to display it. The outside is not changed…

Jayrob welcome! I own a Jayrob host and have seen and held many.
He’s hosts and machining skills are pretty much the benchmark in quality.

One day soon i’ll own your Shorty Mag-Lite 445…
