Mag Mod Led height above edge

Hi all

trying to plan out my heatsink and battery hold for a 1d mag build. I want to try either 3aa or 4aa. So i was going to make a 4aa fit and then if that was to mcuh voltage much just run a dummy cell in the 4th hole unitl I would be able to upgrade drivers.

I want to put in an xm-l led and use the stock reflector for now. I have a really nice thick junk of brass for a heatsink but I need to know how high the led needs to sit up/down from the tope edge of the mag body so that the reflector and head can sit right and be able to get the beam in the right spot in the reflector.

Thanks for all the input.

I actually measured my 4D-mag today and got it to 7.5mm below the top of the tube with the head screwed all the way down.

I’ve dremeled of the stem of the original reflector and will do as old-lumens, screw the heatsink from the side of the tube through the threaded part.

This is going to be a fun build that I’ve been pondering over for quite some time…

The cutting of the tube though…. Let’s hope for a little of OL:s sucess…

4aa can only fit with certain aa batteries, unless you bore out the body. If you can find aluminum, I would recommend it over brass. Brass is a poor heat sink material. To know for sure, the height needed, you need to trim down the reflector first, assemble the head and screw the head down and then measure up from the bottom, to the reflector. Minus that distance from the overall body length and you have the height of the led.

I can get my hands on aluminum as well thanks…Just so you know reading up on your mods have inspired me to do mine. That and reading more about the 14500 and other batteries going pow, has made my mind up to switch to Nimh batteries. Especially with my little ones in the house.

Thanks

Mike

with my malkoff drop-in in a D mag, the led dome sits at the same height as the top edge of the battery tube (when viewed from the side) but the head needs to be unscrewed a few turns to focus nicely at this height…
