uk edc knife

Ok, I’m fancying treating myself to a new knife. It has to be UK edc legal anyone any experience of Byrd, and more to the point, this knife :- http://www.uk-legal-knives.com/byrd-tern-knife-by23gp-byrd-non-locking-single-blade-knives-4-p.asp

And any other suggestions. I’d like the spyderco ukpk, but what I’d like and what I can justify spending are two different things. I’d happily buy an srn, enlan, ganzo etc, but they all seem to have some locking mechanism so are not legal. :~

You could just get one and disable the lock on it. :)

Can they not even be lock knifes now?

As I understand it they must be under 3 inches without a lock.

scaru is right, as long as you dont have a "reasonable cause".. well, thats pretty interpretative.

Yeah, I have heard some horror stories about 100+ dollar knives getting confiscated. I'll admit I may have been carrying a Benchmade Griptilian while there. :D

Best choices are Bokers, the 42 Series which are non-lockers. Available in the UK from Heinne Haynes.

The Sanrenmu H02 series which you can get from Exduct is nice and UK legal. Here’s a good review of it.

But there’s also the highly praised Sodbusters from Heinnie Haynes also.

Because it’s only safe if it doesn’t lock, then it can’t be used as a weapon.

Oh, and it’s more dangerous to yourself too! Even better!

How in the crap do these laws get passed anyway? Who has the wool pulled over their eyes this bad? Someone please explain.

Pretty soon it will be illegal to carry a stick over 3 inches, and walking canes will be considered illegal weapons, because you could “hurt” someone with them if you swung at them. Sorry old folks… stay home I guess.

Knife laws are strange even here in the U.S… We can have a gun and in most places it’s not too hard to even get a concealed carry permit. Yet many knifes are actually technically illegal to carry (not nearly as bad as many of the laws in other countries I realize).

I my state one can have a gun and even conceal it with a proper permit but no automatic knives are allowed even if they aren’t carried. Knives longer than 3” or 4” (blade) are allowed for carrying in many urban areas. Guns are fine however!

Odd laws!

How about the SRM H03, Spyderco Grasshopper, or the kiwi 3

Although, if it had to be non-locking, I’d probably just carry a Swiss Army knife. Maybe a soldier, farmer, climber, or huntsman.

Ditto on the swiss army knife.

Some people have “legalized” axis lock knife. You have to reprofile the tang of the blade. You could probably do something with back lock navy knives, if you cut the small bar of the back lock, you are going to have a sort of slip joint but I don’t know what amount of resistance it will have. Before to cut it completly, try to round this part a bit.

Give more angle to the little bar to increase tension / resistance.
Before, cut it a bit to make it shorter, this will apply more force in the middle or at the end of the “non lock” bar. Longer lever arm = more tension / resistance.

There are still French Opinel knifes. I always liked those. They come cheaply priced. The carbon steel blade can be sharpened easily and keeps an edge; the locking ring on the larger models can be removed with split-ring pliers (those really have 1001 uses! Just recently, I found out they are perfect for removing the spring clips on 1964-1973 Ford & Mercury heater boxes without gauging the fibreglass).

Plus, the beechwood handle is like a piece of blank canvas, ready for your personalised carving.

Hi, thanks for the responses, sorry I’ve not been back on, works a bit too busy and I’m making back some brownie points after my weekend away off roading with Dylan. I’m on baby duty.

Anyway, I’d already found heinie Hayes, and you’ve helped me seperate the crop from the chaff. I’ve rounded it down to a few makes, off the top of my head, boker plus, sog, Sheffield knives, opinal, I’ll do a bit more pondering before I order.

Swiss army knives are definitely out, they are what turned me off non locking knives in the first place as a young scout, buying a non locking knife is a sore point at best, without going back to knives I’ve seen fail and cause accidents. Making a locking knife non locking also seems a potential risk, both from the point of view of making a mistake, and the fact that in the eyes of the law, it may still be seen as a locking knife, not worth the risk with so many other options available.

It’s also been hinted on British blades that a good idea is to not go for a more tactical looking edc - the less aggressive it looks the better, in that light, wooden handles and a sheep’s foot? Blade shape may be preferable - less stabby, more a tool than a weapon, I guess more a contractors knife than anything.

Anyway, enough rambling, I’ll keep you posted on what I order, an as I have Christmas on the way and quite a few kids and nephews to buy for, it may have to slip down the priority list a little, just like buying more lights :frowning:

Thanks for the help. 8)

Hey gords, sorry to be off topic but is that a green jeep cherokee in your profile picture?

Brian, in a “that’s not a knife……” way, I’d love a kukri, sigh. It’s mostly going to be going on another lanyard, with the edc 18650, when that eventually arrives. As I say, a contractor’s knife is looking like the choice.

Generally, a multi tool is of little use to me, I have a pretty full tool kit in the landcruiser, for when Landrover’s break, or I’m in my van - full set of tools, or at home. This is more a thing to have for the sake of having, without carrying my 3.5” locking knife that I take camping, that thing can only be described as “threatening” so it see’s the light of day very rarely.

What have you got in mind for the small suns? The trip was ace, very very wet, but dyl enjoyed himself and the landcruiser performed brilliantly, once I’d sussed out, you don’t creep like your scared of the axles falling to bits like a Landrover, you floor it to get some momentum, and drive it like a stolen mk2 escort half the time  it can get very sideways, even with the lockers banged in.

I like it a lot. 8)

A french webstore sorts knives by locking types, here are “slip joint” knives that you could probably found in your country:
