AA Lithium dangers?

We all know that multi cell CR123 or 18650 lights can be dangerous if one cell is out of balance. My question is, is the same true for a 2XAA light with AA lithium batteries?

AA lithium primaries (like Energizer L91) have different chemical and design characteristics which make them far less volatile. If this wasn’t the case, they wouldn’t be on the market. They’re basically just saying “hey, use these batteries in any AA device you like, multi-cell or not”.

Just don’t try to charge them, or get silly with them.

I have no idea about the array of much cheaper AA lithium primaries on the market though. Just the fact that they’re single use all by itself makes them safer anyway, since the effects of misuse don’t get compounded across additional charge/discharge cycles.

Ya know……it just occurred to me that I should have posted this on the consumable batteries board. Sorry! Cainn, thanks for the response!

They are fairly safe, I have played around with them a lot and the only way I could get a fire was by taking them apart.

I thought of Beavis and Butthead with get a fire quote. Yeeeeah fire huh huh uh.

Fire

Nice :stuck_out_tongue:

LOL. Something about the way you said that conjures up images of poor scaru being disappointed with Lithium primaries because of how much effort it takes to get fire out of them.

Yeah... I had to take them apart and then extract the lithium (I did this under mineral oil so it wouldn't react with the air) and then drop it in water. :D

……. :open_mouth:

So would you say I Scarred you? :P I currently have one in a short to discharge it and I will test it. :D So far it has only gotten up to 82 degrees in a dead short.

82°F (which is room temp. basically) or 82°C (which is painful to touch)?

“A Virginia man renowned in the field of LED and lithium cell battery safety protocols (identity undisclosed pending notification of kin), was discovered yesterday morning by his butler lying unconscious clothed only in a diaper in his penthouse suite. Repeated attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. Investigators so far believe that apparently he had been electrocuted while working on a large array of lithium batteries connected to approximately 50 flashlights bound together aimed at an unknown target from his balcony.

Homicide Special Investigations Unit has noted no signs of foul play but is continuing its investigation due to a mysterious photo of Napoleon Bonaparte which the deceased was clutching in his hands along with two cables. Detectives believe the photo may assist developing further leads towards solving the unusual circumstances surrounding his demise. Suicide as of yet has not been ruled out. ”

Fahrenheit, for the record this is outside where the temperature is around 63(also Fahrenheit).

Oh Americans, why can’t you use proper measurement units, and use some silly units instead? >:3
You scared me at first with 82° rating, but if it’s F, that’s perfectly fine temperature.

Yeah, Celsius would be scary. >) It peaked at 93 degrees Fahrenheit I am starting to doubt my thermocouple attachment as it was most definitely to hot to hold.

I'm gonna test another one to see how hot it gets when measured with an IR thermometer.

Edit: It's out there with some thick wire and a different thermocouple attached to it with thermal glue. I also left a patch of it uncovered for the IR thermometer.

Ok, it peaked at 113 degrees Fahrenheit or 45 Celsius. I'm gonna let it cool down for a bit and then hook it up to another in series and attach that to a sipik. Then I close the ammo can and back up. :D

Ugh... These batteries are way to safe, the one I shorted for an hour straight was only at 1.6 volts. The problem is it must have a thermistor in it. It had already cooled to outside temp when i unshorted it. So now it is in one of my lights being discharged.

Don’t you have a microwave oven scaru? You could just try that instead!
