need a diving light, what about this?

Hi,

I’m in the market for a budget diving light. I was searching dx for diving lights, and currently I’m looking at this one:

http://dx.com/p/new-608-cree-xm-l-t6-1000lm-1-mode-white-light-diving-flashlight-fluorescent-green-1-x-18650-160052

There is only 1 review so far, which makes me nervous. He mentions in his review that some 18650’s will not work. I’d also in need market for some 18650 cells and a charger. I’m not sure which 18650s to buy. Can anybody reccomend middle of the road $$$ 18650s that will work with the light? I need a charger too.

Just looking for some advice on a light here. There are some other diving lights with more reviews. Should I try this one or move on?

If you’re actually using it for diving, I wouldn’t rely on a DX product as my primary dive light. There are numerous reports of DX “dive” lights that are prone to leakage.

Also with dive lights you want a pure thrower. The reason is spill tends to just light up the water immediately around you and just blinding you in a lit up fog. It’s the same reason you don’t run your high beams in a fog.

Instead get a real dive light like the Pelican Nemo Recoil. It uses 4 AA batteries so it’s also foolproof so you can just get a set of Eneloops and a decent smart charger like a LaCross BC-700. The recoil light will be the best for dive purposes as there is practically no spill so you won’t get blinded underwater.

Chinese stuff is fun but even people here will tell you when your life depends on it, don’t cheap out. Also a twisty head underwater is guaranteed leakage. It would only work if you turn it on on the surface and not twist it off. As soon as you twist it underwater, water will leak in.

That sounds like fair advice. Maybe I will get the light you suggest and a DX as a secondary….

I don’t know what kind of diving are you making… I’m a recreational diver and even in my night divings, I can tell you that my live do not depends of the flashlight I’m using at all, so not a big deal if the light stop working, I switch to my back up light.

At the cost of a “well known” dive light, I can buy 2-3-4… Chinese lights taht are suitable for my needs.

Just take a look around in the forum, there are many suggestions, I got one of this, it looks like a good option at a very nice price.

It throw a nice amount of light, just change the o-rings with something better and you are done.

I also have one of this, its so cheap that I’ll buy some more for the rest of my family, the reports are good enough, the size is small, throw a surprising amount of light and for this money you can wear two or more as back up lights or even use them as primary, I have been in a night dive with people wearing less amount of light.

I do not recommend this because the front glass is not thick enough in my opinion.

4 year ago I bought this one and I’ve dive many times with it down to 30m without any trouble, you can find similar ones much more cheaper now a days, and better ones also.

Whatever you buy with 1000lm or more is well enough as a main torch in a night dive and for looking into holes and things like this.

Unless you are a cave diver or some kind of “tech” diver I think you are ok with this Chinese lights. But this is an opinion of course.

Best regards form Zaragoza.

the price is good!
