I need a light for reading

I have a friend who is a flight attendant on intercontinental flights. She needs a flashlight that’s small enough to carry in a uniform pocket and dim enough to not disturb others when she is reading. She usually carries one of those little squeezy lights that uses a hearing aid battery and then tosses it when it runs down. It’s not quite enough light.

I’d like to get her a tiny AAA light for reading and searching for things in the galley bins. I showed her my Sipik SK68 clone (advertised as “7W 300LM Mini CREE LED Flashlight” on ebay) and she said it was way too big, which is why I’m posting this question in the AAA forum. It was also WAY too bright.

What flashlight would you recommend for this purpose? I’m certain that she will not want to fool with rechargeable batteries. By the way, if it were cool in some way that she could show off to other flight attendants, that would be a plus.

EDITED: I was thinking of something like the TANK007 E09, maybe?

Thrunite Ti, 2 modes. 3 lumens or 60 lumens.

+1 It's tiny, cheap, has a very good low and does a proper job with AAA.

If you want to go a bit more expensive: the DQG tiny III (neutral version) from cnqualitygoods.com. Also very good low, but nicer tint and nicer beam (bit more even and spread out) for reading. And regarding the showing-off aspect: it is the smallest flashlight ever on AAA.

Lumintop Worm is probably the best option if she will not use Eneloops.

It's one of the few, if not the only, 1xAAA that regulates well on alkalines. Runtime on high mode is short, but the runtime on the low mode (15ish lumens) is really good. It's been measured at 6-7 hours when run continuous. I don't think anything else comes close to delivering comparable runtime at that output level on an alkaline.

The Thrunite Ti is okay, but its problem is that if the squeeze light wasn't bright enough for your friend the Ti's low mode won't be bright enough either. And if she ends up using the high mode a lot, it will be too bright for her when the battery is fresh and also she will chew through batteries quickly.

ITP A3 (now Olight i3) or the Tank007 E09 are also good choices.

Single AAA (I suggest a lithium primary), well made, three modes and only $20.

I'm partial to the Tank007 E09. 8)

Wouldn’t it be too inconvenient to read a book for an extended period of time while holding a flashlight in one hand?

Would something like this work better?

I have never seen or used the product. Just a thought. Too bulky?

Get a Kindle with a case that has a clip on light.

if I may chime in, I’d recommend the tank007 E09, DQG III and Maratac AAA; the tank007 being the most budget-oriented one.

I have had all three (gave the tank007 away to someone who needed it more than I did), and loved all of them.

Whatever the flashlight, get a cheap diffuser for easier reading.

Most importantly, what colour ?

FourSevens Preon P0

Ti.

Go to Lowe’s. $3.98. Faboo little light. Small. Smooth. Nicely built. Quite. Nice positive feeling switch. Runs long-time. Crisp pretty much everything else including the led holder which threads even into the head to get to the lens. Super-easy to take apart yet it goes back together tight and without hassle. That means sound engineering and machining. It has both.

I bought 15 of them. That should tell ya something.

Ya can reverse the aspheric lens if ya want and get a floodier, throwier beam. Otherwise the stock aspheric as-is angle gives a nice but usable circle that has very little spill around it. This is not a zoomable btw but who cares. It’s great. Perfect for discrete viewing including reading. I run a AAA eneloop in mine.

This could be an O-L moddable into something very cool. Prolly take him 20 minutes. :open_mouth:

Thank me later, Gator. 8)
