Shining beam MG-X thrower. Any good? $30, seems like a contender.

I haven’t heard much about it. How does it compare to C-8 throwers? I’m looking for a tight beam.

Speedsix, I don’t have the light so I can’t help other than to say that Brian over at Shiningbeam has always been wonderful to deal with. I realize you already probably know that, but just incase you didn’t…

I would look elsewhere, the sst-50 is driven@2.8 on high which is too little for the led.If you want to throw an xml in it,should be much better at the 2.8 amp level. After all that you would be better off with another light IMO.

I have one coming in the mail right now. I may get it tomorrow. The same one ( neutral). I’ve been exploring different tints lately, so I asked Bryan Chen what his warmest neutral was, and he pointed me at the X-Thrower SST-50. I’m thinking it will have a lot of flood since it has an OP reflector. I’m hoping the tint will be equivalent to 4C, but I just bought it to check out an SST-50 neutral.

I’ve had one since the SST-50 version first came out, which is probably around May 2010 and during that time it was priced around $70! Even then, I thought it was pretty good value—the overall build quality and anodizing are first-rate.

If I remember correctly, it did out-throw my C8 XM-L, but not my a huge margin. Even though the reflector is OP, the X-Thrower still has a bigger reflector than the C8.

I just wish I could purchase a SMO reflector separately :~

Was your SST-50 a neutral? If so, how was the tint?

Ouchyfoot: It was a neutral SST-50, but I’ve since swapped out the SST-50 for an XM-L. If I remember correctly, the tint was pretty good.

NZ Shooter: I was able to illuminate objects up to roughly 280m away. The X-Thrower isn’t the most “throwy” light for its size anymore though.

If you want a good priced thrower get a Small Sun ZY-T08 or an HD2010.

ive been eyeballing that, just so i can check out the sst50… almost bought it… but ended up buying a camp stove with the money :stuck_out_tongue:

Is it a neutral?

cool. very blue light

still keeping my eye on this one though… hopefully after xmas i can pick it up along with the ea4

I got my X-Thrower SST-50 neutral and P-Rocket XP-G neutral in the mail today. Both lights are extremely solidly built and have some heft. I tried to do some tint comparisons tonight off my balcony, but the wind was howling and blowing freezing rain and I was in my pajamas. Just quickly observing while being pelted with rain, the tint of the X-Thrower was pretty close to the T5 4C of the P-Rocket. The conditions outside precluded any closer observation. When the weather settles I’ll take them out again and compare along with my T6 4C. I have a little leafless forest in front of my balcony, so I can’t really make a statement on throw, but the X-Thrower seemed to have a lot of horsepower behind it. It looks like it really wants to go. Surprisingly, the XP-G P-Rocket seemed like it wanted to take it on.
Oh we’ll. I’m cold and wet and want to curl up with a book. I’ll try again tomorrow.

For $30, I was thinking it was a contender formthe higher priced C8s that are about $30. Considering it is from SB instead of a Chinese site, that makes the deal look so much better. I have been more than happy with SB service and quality. My $30 Blaze is one of the better light for $30 I have ever seen.

The Blaze is way up there in quality on the level of Jetbeam or Klarus easy. I assume the quality will be good and the service will be good. The problem with many C8s is the quality is just not there. My UF C8 shorted out because that plastic washer was not in place well. It was loose and so was the lens. When I went to tighten things up, it shorted and ruined my light.

I am sort of at fault but the design and quality is much more to blaim. It should not have happened and it destroyed my light far to easily.

I have four flashlights from Shining Beam, and every one impress.
